Topic: The 80's

I make no apology saying I love songs from the above decade.  I got married in 1983 and so many great things happened then. among them were some interesting bands, MTV videos.  Along with soul music, music from the 80's just makes me feel good and you guys will never know how much I need positive memories at this crossroads in my life.  I love my blues, but sometimes I have to step away from the genre and just smile.

I made a disc for a girl I know and listening to it just lowers my blood pressure and puts a smile in my heart.  I'll give you my playlist a little at a time and hope some of you are brave enough to give me your favorites.

1.  You Get What You Give - The New Radicals - God I love this song!
2.  Everybody Wants To Rule the World - Tears For Fears - My personal favorite from the decade
3.  Back On the Chain Gang - The Pretenders - last 45 I ever bought on the day I proposed to my girlfriend lol!
4.  What I Like About You - The Romantics - May not qualify, but I love the energy here.
5.  Foolish Heart - Steve Perry - What a voice.....

Sorry I'm not with you as a big fan of the decade,however that does not mean its completely a lost cause lol.Give me some Talking Heads,Cars,Police to name a few.

Quite a few decent bands and concerts back then. Steve Perry DID have a great voice.

Wasn't a huge fan of many of the bands that emerged IN the '80's, but now that they are "classic rock" acts and considering the shite on the airwaves these days it's more tolerable. Here's one for ya Curby, 867-5309 by Tommy Tutone, still enjoy this one when my friends in the Cover2Cover Band crank it up, always gets the crowd shakin' it!

Music will always be a time machine for me and I'm so glad I wasn't growing up with the Bieber and scratching my head twenty years later feeling cheated.  Listening to Joe Jackson's "Breaking Us In Two" (#13 on the list).

I love that New Radicals song, but thats from the 90s? Also loved the 80s... I wasn't really allowed to watch MTV as a kid but my buddy's parents lived and looked like that came fresh from a Motley Crue concert just about all time. So I always watched it at his house. And also, MTV was actually worth watching back then.

I usually peruse youtube for 1980s commercials and stuff now. Thank God for that at least. Also, my all time favorite movie "RAD", is from the 80s.

Have to admit, through the 80s, my main music love was for Classic Rock bands (or hang-overs from the 70s) and the upcoming Glam metal bands. When they kind of fizzled out with the rise of Thrash metal, which I just couldn't warm to, my tastes drifted to Goth bands (must have been the mascara......) like The Cure, Siousxie Sioux, The Mission etc.

Variety being the spice, etc, also had a taste for synth bands like Ultravox, Tubeway Army, Soft Cell & Yazoo. The latter being the start for one of my all-time favourite singers Alison (Alf) Moyet.

When life gives you lemons; don't make lemonade.

"MTV"...... says it all....at least back then the TV Jocks played alot of cool videos....I can remember  Joe S., Gary M., Pretenders, Police, U-2 etc.

And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually.........

Pretty much a lost decade for me, too much pop, too little rock.  The Wall and Roger Waters' solo albums; Talking Heads; Dire Straits, Prince and ZZ Top  kept the radio on hoping to hear something else good....to little avail.

The end of Pink Floyd and the "death" (for me) of Springsteen with the release The River make it a musical decade Id prefer never happened.

65-77 and the 90s are where most of my musical tastes lie.

The 80's , love this era

The biggest Group for me with the 80's was:  TESLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, that is when their first album hit and even though Little Suzi was the big hit, Modern Day Cowboy was the one I wore out the most.  Actually I wore the whole album out, every song was great.  This brings back such great memories.  Such great concerts, one of the best being seeing Tesla with Def Leppard in the round.   That was the way to do it, in the Round.  Great stage and gave the groups a  lot of room to work the crowd and just added so much to the show.  Cumin Atcha Live- Tesla Rocks!

Another pinnacle was when Foreigner 4 came out.  That was such an Epic album with "Mutt" Lange producing it.  Kind of a different direction from their previous albums.  Lou Gramm's vocals on "I'll be Waiting for a Girl like You" just made me melt.  What a gorgeous, beautiful song.  Then comes the intense "Urgent" with one of the most famous sax solos in Rock.  And then the Guitar Anthem "Juke Box Hero".  Foreigner always wrote great songs, that was their foundation.

And then that is also when Metallica broke lose and took the reigns.  Can't believe how time flies and that is what was happening then.  Seems like it was just yesterday.

Edit to add: Def Leppard, because they were one of my mainstays too.

Foreigner 4. Now you are talking! A perfect album. Saw them tour it in Edinburgh in 1982 supported by Gamma. An incredible night and still have the oh so small now t shirt. The next album Agent Provocateur got overshadowed by the hit ballad but has some great songs such as Tooth and Nail and Down on Love ( another masterful Lou Gramm vocal) and That Was Yesterday.

I never would have thought that 80's music would be my last post for other artists, but there you go.  I'll continue to post elsewhere here so don't think I'm going anywhere.  My last album purchase was the excellent DeWolf IV and it was a good one to end things on.  Youth continuing the tradition of playing fine music.  I watched some of the Grammys the other night and was pleasantly surprised at the amount of good performances.  There's still hope.

I know I've irritated some of you over the years with my eclectic tastes, but that has always been me.  80's music, like Soul/R&B, has always been comfort food for my restless soul.  After disco ruined an otherwise promising 70's decade the arrival of the eighties was met with some trepidation.  No period in music will ever exceed 1965 to 1975 yet I still return to those silly 80's songs when I want my spirits lifted.  To quote Bullwinkle, "It's the wayback machine Brah!"

A couple people here know things have turned for my family.  We're working through it taking one day at a time and reminding ourselves to be thankful for the things we have.  I value greatly all the fine folks here that are dear to me.

they were few and far between, but the Cars and Police are 2 of my favs. Joe Jackson is a total treasure mine, forget the one single Steppin Out, that accidentally made the top 40 and I bet it made him sick. Try Sunday Papers, Look Sharp, and many many others that are fabulous. I never could stomach Steve Perry, except maybe Sherri. You know if they could have married then she would be Sherri Perry. lol

My preferences in the early 80ies were bands like Dire Straits,or Clapton - guitar pop.

Later I started with heavier Bands. It was the decade of my all-time favorit Ronnie James DIO.
Lp´s (yes Lp´s) like Heaven&Hell, Mob Rules with Sabbath and Holy Diver, Last In Line, Sared Heart, Dream Evil and Lock Up The Wolves solo ...

It all ended with grunge sad

I liked the 80’s and a majority of the big hair bands. Ozzy, White Snake, Dio & The Cult just to name a few. I also liked The Fix, J Giles Band, Blackfoot and the sound track form the movie Eddie and the Cruisers, is great!

Many of the Classic Rock Bands were still rocking the 80’s, Zepplin/The Firm and Plant’s Solo work, Yes, The Stones, Pink Floyd, Pete Townshend.

Take s look at you collection, and see how many LP’s and Cd’s you really have from the 80’s

Can't say it's my favorite decade of music, but I do love 80s metal and hard rock, SRV hit it big, and bands like Dire Straits kept the music I like going strong.

My older brother and our neighbors (two boys, about our ages) pitched in and bought Def Leppard's "Pyromania" and J. Geils Band "Freeze Frame" records.  It was the first time I really remember getting into music.  Pyromania is still one of my favorite rock albums.  We were listening at our neighbor's house until their mom found out Freeze Frame has a song called "Piss on the Wall" and she didn't let them listen anymore.  So we went to our house and rocked out!

When I finally got a radio in my room (brother's hand-me-down radio, 8-track, record player all-in-one unit, which was awesome) I remember listening a song by this new band Bon Jovi.  The had a song "You Give Love A Bad Name" and I remember thinking "Wow, this is great.  This band is going to be really big!"  For years I thought I was really great at picking the hits and new bands, but I didn't have the perspective to realize they were already pretty big - big enough to be on the Top 40 countdown when I heard the song. smile  Ah, to be young and stupid.

I'm not a big fan of 80s production in general, although of course there are great-sounding records.  I don't like the 80s pop sound, and too much synth and compression isn't pleasing to my ears.  I also favor more guitar-driven stuff, so songs with heavy keyboards don't appeal to me as much.

The 80s did had some good rock, blues and metal.
