Guadamalan Rosewood...

It was covered on the Les Paul forum.... Nothing wrong with Guatamalan Rosewood.   Especially at the point in history when Gibson made these.  They have been out for better than a year.  Great guitar, I have one.

Re: What do you guys know about the JB LP studio with Granadillo

I also bought one of these last year and have no complaints, but I have not played or compared it to a 2011 with Rosewood.

My board is not uniform in colour and has a fair bit of marbling and grain with a mid dark red brown colour. The abscence of white binding on the neck gives the edge of the fretboard a nice contrast of almost walnut fretboard against the black neck.

I switched the pickups for the JB Seymour Duncans and the bridge to an ABR1 with 3 nylon saddles and a Nickel bridge whilst I was at it, not that this necessary at all. This gets me very close to the more expensive Custom or standard model and I love it.

Pumping this through my 50w Marshall via my JB Fuzzface and JB Wah is so awesome I am addicted badly ;0)

Re: What do you guys know about the JB LP studio with Granadillo

Granadillo is a tone wood.

It's not an "economy" wood, nor is it a "traditional" wood of choice for Gibson or Fender. It is a good sounding wood that can replace or upgrade from rosewood legally and in a quality way. We need to start shifting away from only using mahogany, maple, ebony, alder, ash and rosewood from our wooden requirements, and this is a good step in that direction.

here's some cool info on granadillo
http://www.savagewoods.com/granadillo.html

Tone Qualities:
"In South America, it is highly regarded as the best tonewood choice for marimba and xylophone bones and is often referenced as “La Madera Que Canta” (“wood that sings”). Granadillo has been said to have a ringing, bright tap tone and is gaining popularity amongst American instrument makers."

Re: What do you guys know about the JB LP studio with Granadillo

I think most people's beef with it is that it's not a traditional rosewood that's been regularly used on guitars, it's lighter color and overall ignorance for what it really is. Good or bad, I don't know. I never played a guitar with it but I would have to guess if it were really that bad, Gibson wouldn't use it on a 13-14hundred dollar guitar. Maybe I'm being conservative in my trust but I wouldn't think it will have a negative tonal effect. And can always darken it up once you get the guitar home. I say give one a shot. Most places offer a solid return policy.

Re: What do you guys know about the JB LP studio with Granadillo

I had one. It sounded very good, but I sent it back because I'm a sucker for dark fretboards and was under the impression I was getting rosewood rosewood based on the ad. If you're cool with the color, you'll love it. Nothing wrong with Granadillo.
