Topic: (almost) NGD!! ES-335 content

I had been keeping an eye out for a cherry block inlay ES-335 like Clapton/Joe play... I finally found one so I bit the bullet and put a down payment on it and will pay it off after I get my tax return in the next couple weeks. It will also be getting a functional makeover with Grovers, Tonepros ABR-1 bridge with nylon saddles, Pigtail tailpiece, a historically correct wiring kit, and WCR Crossroad pickups. I REALLY can't wait to get this. Unfortunately this will nix my trip to Nashville to go shopping down there, but I've got friends there so I will make it another time.

Oh bay-bee - that's a beauty!!!

Reminds me of Alvin Lee though (could be that I'm older than you smile )

Re: (almost) NGD!! ES-335 content

Yes, Alvin Lee too! It just that seeing a cherry ES-335 with block inlays, takes me right to Cream. I think I should have enough $$ left over from my tax return to pick up a new amp too which will finish my rig :-D

Re: (almost) NGD!! ES-335 content

That is a beautiful piece there Logan but (not to sound old!) have you still considered going to Nashville, to see your friends and look around at guitars? I don't remember when you said you were anticipating traveling but it is cool exploring guitar shops and possibly finding "the one" tucked away somewhere. But I know how it is when you have your heart set on something, it doesn't always come along when you expect it, but if its what you want; then get it. It really is a beauty, hope it all works out brother!

Re: (almost) NGD!! ES-335 content

Thanks man! The only problem with the Nashville plan (for now) is the people that I'd be going to see very well might be out on the road supporting their album that just came out today... and then they're off to Europe in April. I have no doubt that it'll pan out eventually... perhaps this summer! I've got a list of 17 (now 16) guitars that I know off the top of my head that I want... and a life time of hunting. This is the first of many crossed off the list.

Re: (almost) NGD!! ES-335 content

Congrats!  Beware, you may end up loving your 335 more than any Les Paul.  I know that happened to me when my wife bought me my '04 blonde flametop 335.  The neck pickup tends to be more usable, the guitar sounds more "snappy" and open for lack of better terms, and there is that famous feedback-on-command thing that makes a 335 so magical.  People ask me the main difference between a LP and 335 and I tell them, "It's the way the guitar sustains.  A LP sustains because of that thick, dense hunk of mahoghany on the neck and body.  It's focused, chunky, and has a lot of authority.  A 335 sustains for completely different reasons, the maple laminate top actually vibrates like an acoustic guitar and adds this hollow upper-octave harmonic thing to the tone."  Not to mention, there is nothing like standing in front of a cranked 100w Marshall feeding back with a 335....the air rushing out of the f-holes is like air conditioning for your arms!

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

Re: (almost) NGD!! ES-335 content

Sounds like you've got a pretty fantastic wife! Truth be told, I've never even plugged in with a 335... only a 339... Unfortunately I don't have any 100 watters either haha. My next endeavor will be to complete my rig (two 2x12 cabs and an Allan Amps Encore 4x10) and then start saving to knock my off of my "want" list. I can't wait to finish this rig up.

In regards to the wife, yup she's amazing.  When I first met her she couldn't tell the difference between a banjo and a Jackson Soloist.  Now she can identify Telecasters, Stratocasters, Les Pauls, and even the numbered guitars like an ES-335.  She bought me an old MXR Flanger that I had been eyeballing for X-mas and had no idea what it did.  Now she's like, "Oh that's the one that goes eeeee---aaaaaah---ooooooo--!"  She knows enough to tell if something new comes in or something old gets sold lol.

I assure you, you don't need 100 watts to get a 335 to blow some air.  If you get a chance, you may really dig the way a 335 sounds plugged into a little tweed deluxe.  Nails that "From the Cradle" Clapton tone and can even get you into old-school Larry Carlton territory.  The tone that keeps me up at night is my 335 into one of my old Echoplex's, an old rack reverb, and the 100w Superlead.  Wowza!
