Annelies, Bibi, Marianne, my friend Jos and I braved the wintry elements (seriously, it snowed all day) last Sunday to see Erick Steckel. I'm sure that all would agree that he was more than worth the effort. as would the 60-80 largely bikers who crammed into a pretty small but very cozy venue.
It's a crying shame that Eric only has one UK gig, a sold out one in Sedgefield. This boy seriously ROCKS! He gives me that early Joe buzz again! Please enjoy the vids below, with his latest awesome cover of Empty Promises at the bottom of the list. I wanted to film more, but I just couldn't force myself to keep even more still when I wanted to bop - which is why Bad Sign is a fragment - wasn't intending to film but it was just SO good.
Stage lighting was terrible, it was very dark, but the sound, as always, is great.

Thank you so much for sharing, George.
Eric was my first show in 2013 and I'm still sooooo happy that I was able to see him last week.
Thanks George! He's a player for sure.

So I bought 3 of his CDs. I've been focusing on the newest one first. I like the songs and the playing a lot. But someone seriously neeeds to teach him how to sing. I mean really sing. All of the constant voice "pushing" really wears on me. For example the unbelievably great track Empty Promises. Everyone I have played it for can't let the song get to the guitar solo before the mention how annoying the overdone vocals are. Don't get me wrong, he has a good voice, but he's got to turn down the pushing - as in eliminate it.
Eric's UK debut gig at Sedgefield is SOLD OUT! We've been told to expect an epic night; not just Krissy Matthews getting the evening going, but a couple of "special guests" dropping in to make Eric feel welcome. Also, being a Friday, the party might just go on a little longer than normal.... Anyone coming along, its going to be a memorable evening - just watch out for John the Demon Raffle Ticket Seller....

I'm sure you'll be back to tell us how much you enjoyed him! Just in case you don't know it, and because it's such a wonderful version, here's the great man himself performing this monster of a song for the very last time.

I passed on your greeting to Eric and his face lit up - he had good things to say about you, Walter.
I'll put my thoughts on the gig up when I get more time, but enough to say he was amazing.
Most of this is probably "old news" to you guys in Belgium, Germany & Holland, but here goes:-
Its only January, and its already one of the most hotly anticipated gigs of the year; Eric Steckel’s UK debut, and he picked this corner of England to have it, rather than that, there London. A young R’n'B Club Sedgefield may be, but such is the reputation it has already garnered.
Mind, Eric came on a flying visit from the Continent with reputation to match. This was “his” night, and he played a storm ( the 4inches of snow that fell outside was testiment to that). From the opening instrumental salvo, to the dying notes of his epic take of Michael Burks’ “Empty Promises”, 2 hours later, Eric and his European band just never let up. The set covered through the last 3 albums, with a fair-share of covers which Eric had twisted to suit himself. There was really great soloing, especially on the slower, blues tracks that had maturity, fluidity and melody reminiscent of Matt Schofield and our Aynsley.
The backing band are a bit older than Eric, and have a good pedigree behind them, but they really complimented each other, especially Bob Fridzma’s hammond sound. Things looked like they were set up for a jam encore, with Krissy, Gary Grainger (the evening’s M.C.) and Trevor Sewell who was also in the house, but I’m guessing things over-ran.
As first impressions go, Eric gave a damn fine account of himself, maybe not as used to a UK audience as much as a German or Dutch one, but for my money, he’s welcome back anytime, and I’d strongly recommend you be there when he comes.
Mike
One little point - looked like the show was being filmed/recorded, so watch out.
Think Eric re-assembled the Sun before he flew back over to Holland - melted most of the snow - nice touch!
Thanks for the great review Mike. I've heard that he comes back in the summer and in the last months of this year.
