Topic: Wilko Johnson making farewell tour.

WILKO JOHNSON – IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

I am very sad to announce that Wilko has recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer of the pancreas. He has chosen not to receive any chemotherapy.

He is currently in good spirits, is not yet suffering any physical effects and can expect to enjoy at least another few months of reasonable health and activity.

He has just set off on a trip to Japan; on his return we plan to complete a new CD, make a short tour of France, then give a series of farewell gigs in the UK. There is also a live DVD in the pipeline, filmed on the last UK tour.

Wilko wishes to offer his sincere thanks for all the support he has had over his long career, from those who have worked with him to, above all, those devoted fans and admirers who have attended
his live gigs, bought his recordings and generally made his life such an extraordinarily full and eventful experience.

Thank you.

Re: Wilko Johnson making farewell tour.

Oh man how sad is this? His wife died of cancer in 2004.

I hope he gets his wish to play a lot of gigs in the next few months. He puts on a great show as Martin & VATA will testify. And I have happy memories of seeing the original Dr. Feelgood in 1975.

Yesterday I just finished reading his book " Looking back at me" which is rather ironic.

Re: Wilko Johnson making farewell tour.

Devastating news. He is an absolute diamond of a man.

Re: Wilko Johnson making farewell tour.

Sad news.

Re: Wilko Johnson making farewell tour.

A must buy/see is the DVD "Oil City Confidential". It's absolutely brilliant.

Look it up.

I am very sad to hear this.

I never had the pleasure of seeing them. I wish I would have had the chance to meet him. He looked like he always gave it his all and is still doing that.

I am glad he chose to do what he feels is best so that he can do more of what he wants and enjoys.

I wish him a fabulous tour surrounded by all his fans that love him.

Re: Wilko Johnson making farewell tour.

What terrible news.

He is very brave to go without the treatment. It could be horrendous, but as you point out he lost  his wife to this awful disease so he will know what he is doing.

As an East End boy, trips to Canvey Island were frequent back in the day, quite often in cars that didn't belong  to us (oh dear oh dear), but I ha the pleasure of seeing the original Feelgoods several times. It was always hot and sweaty and 100% high octane stuff. At the time, they were just one of the best coming out of that era. You didn't appreciate you were watching one of the 'seminal' acts of the period.

They broke out during the punk period but they were never part of that. Their musicianship alone stood them apart from so much of the dross that was about then. But they had the visceral energy of punk. Live sets were absolutely tenacious. It was impossible not to dance when they played. You literally 'had' to move with it. The Feelgoods sort of heralded in a new wave of frantic R&B. They never got the commercial recognition they deserved but were hugely influentional. Lee Brilleaux was/is one of my all-time favourite front men. But with Wilko, there was no one to compare. He was a complete individual. Almost a Keith Moon of the guitar, but without the insanity.

It was a great time, with great music and Canvey was a happening place back then and the talents of Essex girls, were of course, the stuff of legend.

One of my favourites....what does and Essex girl use for protection?..............a bus shelter.........

Good luck Wilko, this is no easy road you are taking, but looking back over your career 'twas ever thus'.

You'll be an 'original' to the bitter end. Make it count, like always.

oi, oi... Not to forget his work with one of the best backing bands in the business... The Blockheads.

Hope he does not suffer but keeps rocking for as long as he can.

Re: Wilko Johnson making farewell tour.

Got tickets for the Glasgow gig which is going to be his very last show. It's going to be an emotional night and something I have never experienced before.

I am so happy for you and I know it will be a memorable night.

If you get to talk to him, please let him know that he has fans in America that are thinking about him and support him.  I hope he brings the house down in Wilko style and you guys have the party of the year.

If you find a moment, I would look forward to hearing about the evening.  Wishing you both a night filled with love.

Think you better hurry Pete, gig will sell out. Wolverhampton and Holmfirth sold out (Ents 24). Can see Glasgow going to the bigger hall. Former Feelgoods to make guest appearances.

Re: Wilko Johnson making farewell tour.

Well it looks as though London will be his last ever show as he has announced a second one on Sunday March 10 as the first one sold out in no time. Tickets on sale at 10 am tomorrow (Tuesday).

Not sure if Glasgow gig will sell out as it coincides with the original Status Quo's first gig.

Re: Wilko Johnson making farewell tour.

Just seen that the Holmfirth Picturedome date has already sold out.

Don't know how many tickets are left, but Wilko is doing a 3 night run at Greystones, Sheffield. Originally 2, a 3rd night was added in light of the sad news as a thanks to supporters in the city.

Dates; 16th, 17th & 18th February.

Cheers Kenny - Greystones a little slow updating on their site.
