Topic: NGD - Something To Learn Slide On
A while ago I decided that I wanted to teach myself to play slide guitar and after a bit of investigation opted to start learning in open G tuning. That, of course, would need a dedicated guitar that I could set up in open tuning with a slightly higher action rather than keep changing the setup of one of my existing guitars.
The next question was what guitar should I get for this purpose? Should I go for something equipped with single coil, P90 or humbucker? I considered and rejected a MIM Fender Esquire, a Yamaha Pacifica 611HFM (which has a very versatile pickup arrangement of a tapped humbucker in the bridge position and a P90 in the neck) and various Gibson SGs with P90s, mini humbuckers and full size humbuckers.
I eventually decided that a Strat was the way to go. However, whilst I expected to use the neck and middle pickups I thought the usual bridge single coil would be too bright for slide so perhaps one of the many fat Strats with a humbucker in that position was a better option.
After looking at what Fender had to offer I came across the FSR American Special, which I managed to find locally. It is a great guitar and I’m lovin’ it!
