Topic: Best Delay Pedal a amp with no Effects loop.

I'm currently wanting to play some modern christian contemporary music at my church maybe once a month and it has become very evident that the music requires a delay effect similar to something The Edge from U2 would do.  I'm really thinking I want an analog cascading type delay, however I also hear that delays work best with a effects loop.  I use a blues Jr amp so I really don't want to buy a new amp just so I have an effective delay pedal.  I'm using the amp clean and using a distortion pedal for most of my tones.  Does anybody have a good suggestion.  I was thinking of an MXR Carbon Copy since that was THE it pedal when I started playing 13 years ago.  If you think a digital pedal is better please explain why.

Check out TC Electronic flashback delay.  I'm using one in front of a Mesa TA-15.
Lots of versatility and the tone print is a nice feature.

Re: Best Delay Pedal a amp with no Effects loop.

I have the mxr carbon copy and love it.

You need to decide whether you want digital or analogue first really.

Joe generally uses the boss digital delay but I think he has used the analogue way huge aquaplus as well. The mxr is the same designer as way huge (Jeorge Tripps the guy who worked with Joe on his pedals) and I went with it because he said he thought it was better in an interview.

Re: Best Delay Pedal a amp with no Effects loop.

I think the carbon copy (while I do like mine) might be a little dark for what you're after. I have a Vox time machine that is very clean sounding and has tap tempo which might also be nice for you. Either way though, if you do decide on the MXR I'm sure it'll be just fine. I just find them to be a little darker.

Re: Best Delay Pedal a amp with no Effects loop.

I sold my Carbon Copy a while ago and never looked back. It's good for the first few weeks until you realize how dark it is; currently I use a TC Electronics Nova Repeater on the "tape" setting. It's a wonderful unit!

I would consider the Strymon Timeline for what you are wanting.

If 330 ms is enough for you, try Aqua Puss. smile

Aqua Puss won't do any of the ambient things he needs. There are some other Jeorge Tripps delays that would probably do it for you.

Haha, but at $400 I don't need to be playing with them anyway!  I wanna help out, but I don't wanna go broke doing it.  No offense wharris.

Re: Best Delay Pedal a amp with no Effects loop.

Didn't know those Tripps pedals were that expensive. I've got a TC Ater Ego. Check it out, you might like it. I like the Tone Print feature as well. You can find them used on TGP sometimes.

Well I don't need anything right way, I'll just go to a local store and try a few things out.  I'm definitely looking on ebay when I'm ready.

Make sure to ask to be able to try in the church building! wink Extend the delay and/or reverb with a full congregation present for fine tuning. wink

Re: Best Delay Pedal a amp with no Effects loop.

Our church is kind of a modern church, in a old church building that was donated to us.  We pulled all the pews for fold up chairs and built a pretty big stage.  It does have tall ceilings made of pine I believe I could be wrong.  The sound is kind of dark in there.  I did an audition last week and I set my pedals up kind of bright in my opinion (however I was playing through a Marshall Class 5 amp the church had there.) and I set the eq on the amp flat playing my Les Paul Traditional Pro.  I was really disliking the Class 5 to be honest with my pedal board.  I feel like I've got my distortion pedal dialed in pretty good for my Blues Jr.  Its a Tech 21 Double Drive 3x.  It was a gift from my father.  I love the pedal but it remember your settings and stores them in the pedal giving you 3 different presets and none of my presets really worked with the Marshall.  It was a 5 minute audition so I didn't bother dialing in a tone.  I played by myself so I found it hard to judge the acoustics of the room but I imagine the room was bouncing all over the place!

I might also add I dislike ambient delay tones myself so I want some to get some kind of delay going but I don't want to make it sound like all the other guys that do all that weird stuff that our music director likes.  I will blues up their praise and worship, its just what I do.

Any music director complaints toward you, just say my left hand (or foot) wasn't letting my right hand know what it was doing!

Re: Best Delay Pedal a amp with no Effects loop.

I think I'm 95% sure I'm going with a MXR Carbon Copy.  I have a Blues jr with brightness mod on it and I really like the idea that it gets dark repeats just because my amp is already kind of bright.

Re: Best Delay Pedal a amp with no Effects loop.

For what it's worth, I have the carbon copy and love it.  I also use a DD-6 when I want a more synthetic-type delay.

Re: Best Delay Pedal a amp with no Effects loop.

I'm thinking I can snag a Carbon copy for about $100 on Ebay and that seems fair, maybe after the January right before tax season.  I want it because I think the darker repeats will work better for me.  I'm also looking into Way Huge but I am not crazy about the size of their pedals for my pedal board.  I've already got 2 pedals that are about the size of 2 and 3 pedals.
