Topic: Derek Trucks

So, who is this guy.      I was at a xmas party today and I commented on how its been 30  years since I have seen a concert. And I continued on telling them about Joe Bonamassa.  I told them both the Bushnell and Springfield concerts where unbelievable.   So these buddy's said sure he is good but this guy Derek Trucks, is so much better.   I sort of felt as if somebody just told me my wife stepped out on me with another man.LOL..    anyways I seen some of this mans work on youtube and there is no doubt he is very good, but he doesn't do any vocals and he just doesn't entertain like Joe does. I don't know if it's me or what. I feel Joe is so much more accomplished and polished compared to Mr Trucks.   JMO

Re: Derek Trucks

Derek is great...at the levels Joe and Derek are at, some of it comes down to personal taste.
I prefer joe and, personally, think he's a better player. That is not to take anything away from Derek....Just my taste and opinion. I think anyone saying Derek is "so much better" is a bit misguided.

Re: Derek Trucks

They were right!  Derek is so much better............at slide guitar than Joe Bonamassa.  But he's not a better guitarist or musician.  They both are great in those points in ways that neither is better than the other...but so much better than many (not any) others!

Re: Derek Trucks

Love, love, love Derek Trucks.  I saw him about 10-12 years ago with the Derek Trucks Band at Martyr's in Chicago (about 100 people), and again at HOB a year or so later.  I also think the Tedesci Trucks Band is stronger than either of their solo groups, which were both awesome.

I do agree with Rocket, though, he's great and Joe is great, but they do very different things.  Once you get to a certain level, "better" or "best" is kind of a irrelevant.  Better at what?  Slide playing?  Jazz?  Metal? Which subgenre?  Songwriting?  Repertoire?  Alternate picking?  There are a billion categories... most of which are very subjective.

Re: Derek Trucks

Trucks is a beast. Amazing player. DTB is fantastic, and Tedeschi-Trucks is even better.

Re: Derek Trucks

Love Derek's slide playing nobody better than him at slide. I like it his playing when he takes off the slide too. I have seen the DTB a few times and truthfully I got a bit bored. I had to be coerced to see him with Susan. Now that is a whole different animal. To me that is the only live show that is anywhere near Joe's in pure 2 hours of kick **** playing, singing and showmanship. Derek personally has none. He is smart enough to surround himself with people that do. Susan being one but the whole band is the show. DTB die hard's hate it but I love it and they went from 800 paid to 2,000 plus paid virtually overnight.

Re: Derek Trucks

I'd be inclined to go with Warren Haynes as a better guitar player than Derek, slide or not. However I will never enter a debate between Joe & Warren.

Re: Derek Trucks

Derek's playing is very soulful...
Watch clip of him playing with B.B King and John Mayer.
He killed John Mayer (in playing).
I can't compare him to Joe....I love them both!

Re: Derek Trucks

I love how people preface their thoughts on who's better by saying 'In my opinion' as if it absolves them of contributing to the juvenile 'best guitarist' arguments that run rife around the internet.

These are the same people who would take offence if i said 'Steve Vai is better', yet because i never added 'in my opinion' to the statement, i'd be open to all manner of rebuttals telling me how wrong i am

My point? No-one really (when pressed) cares about who you/me/we think is better, all it does is make the 'music-as-competition' culture we live in more credible & palpable despite it's hypocrisy, irrelevance, and insincerity.

Sorry, in a cynical frame of mind this morning smile

Mr. Obvious sez yes to yer admition.  I agree with pretty much all the above statements, but in my humble opinion, (couldn't resist), I feel JB plays at a level that Derek, Warren, or my buddy Johnny Mayer even know about.

Yes when Derek and Warren toured together in the ABB Warren took him to school but that was a few years ago. I do like Derek's slide style but Warren is no slouch. I love all three but prefer Derek with Susan and Warren with the Mule and Joe with whoever the hell he is playing with at anytime. Prefer Joe to them all.

Re: Derek Trucks

I love Derek Trucks... i recently got to know him and i cannot stop listening to him... he's a genious...
and what i like about him is that he plays to touch people with his music and not to show how good he can be on the guitar...
and Man! how he melts me away when he does his solos and his slides !!!!! i repeat he's a genious...

Re: Derek Trucks

Derek is an amazing - just amazing - guitarist. He's played with the Allman Brothers for years. He's Butch Trucks (drums) nephew and has jammed with the band since he was 15 or so. He's named for Derek and the Dominos (Duane Allman). And no he doesn't sing. With Greg and Warren in that band and his wife Susan in Texeschi Trucks no need. Now personally I prefer Warren but the interaction between them is amazing. He toured with Clapton a few hears ago.  And as stated at that level it's personal taste.
