Topic: Jonny Lang/Tommy Castro

An enjoyable night. I was pleasantly surprised by Tommy Castro, straight ahead blues/blues-rock, fun stuff. Had a great keyboard player, James Pace,  though a little over the top on some of his hand actions.

Jonny Lang? Easier to cut and paste a message sent to a friend, a big Lang fan:

"Dude, Jonny Lang needs to take the timeless advice of the immortal Frank Zappa and "Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar". When he played he was great, when he sang in his range he was great, when he growled, screamed, falsettoed or doubled his guitar lines he was simply awful (and 10 straight minutes of it? nearly put me to sleep). He also starts a jazz groove like the beginning of "Rack em Up" and then loses it. It wasnt bad, but could be so much better if he'd stick to the basics. Small doses like when he plays with Experience Hendrix even better! At least KWS had the good sense to hire a singer, though Noah Hunt could have the most annoying stage presence Ive ever seen!"

Re: Jonny Lang/Tommy Castro

Agree totally on Lang. We walked on him several years ago for the same reason. It seems he hasn't changed a bit. I'm glad to hear TC is doing well. He has been a favorite of mine for years and I was dismayed to see his big band break up earlier this year. We would have been there too but for holiday commitments.

Re: Jonny Lang/Tommy Castro

I dont know much of the TC band history except the BMA awards  won in 2011, but the current lineup is really solid.

The concert calendar is a bit sparse and clumped...The Tubes (of course!) and Quadrophenia nearly back to back in Feb, with TC and Paul Thorn stuck in the middle, so I probably wont make it then jump to April for Carl Palmer and some guy named Joe.

Hope all is well with you and family..any Europe trips for the holidays?

BTW I dont know if your travels ever get you up toward Temecula/Murrieta but if youre headed there see if The Brett Cohen Band is playing. Definitely worth dropping in for a couple of drinks.

We are hitting Greg Allman at the Balboa here next Jan. 8. Otherwise pretty sparse for groups we'd like to see. Hoey sold out here before I could pull the trigger.  TC had a big band with horn and sax that had a fabulous sound. That was the group that won the award. No holiday travel, just home and family here. Next Spring has us hitting the road to London, then on to Germany for the family there, then back just in time for JoeVegas. I'll keep a watch on that group in Murietta. The new place in Ramona has gotten my attention since they are booking in some good gigs. Both a stretch to drive on a weekday but maybe on a Saturday. Season's best to you and yours.
