Topic: Hollywood, Fl.

A quite honest and analytical guitarist's review. http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/reviews/ … index.html Any fans care to chime in that were there?

Re: Hollywood, Fl.

Yeah, it sucked.
Plus, the dumb-ass doesn't know his Firebirds!

Re: Hollywood, Fl.

OOPS! I wasn't there, but the review still sucked!

Re: Hollywood, Fl.

I knew I wouldn't agree with the "gentleman" as soon as he complained about the tone!! What is it that we all love about Joe's playing? His tone. I hate reviews from psuedo-experts that have a narrow focus of taste. Joe doesn't need any hints from this clown. He's doing just fine!!   Cathy

Re: Hollywood, Fl.

I read it and think this guy does not get Joe at all.   But there is room in my world for people to disagree with me.  I think some folks just like to be critical.  I do think he was not trying to be hurtful.  Just a little too much for me.

Re: Hollywood, Fl.

Had, read the review, what can I say? Poor use of the English language, contradictory statements, a strange statement about trying to imitate old blues singers and a few mistaken assumptions. Hope the reviewer was not paid to write that... Some examples:

Joe was incredible but a little hard to wrap my head around

The song was definitely bluesier than the others were, though the foot stomping beat made it feel folky to me, even though it probably wasn’t supposed to.

vocally again setting a tone with his voice, one that imitates the African American blues artists of yesteryear.

Howlin' Wolf cover with a main riff that is probably where Jimmy Page got his inspiration for his "Whole Lotta Love" riff.

"The recently formed Edinburgh Blues Club has identified an appetite for the personal communication between musicians and audience that the blues long ago perfected." The Herald Newspaper (Scotland)

Re: Hollywood, Fl.

What got me and stuck in my head and canceled in my mind his opinion was when he said
"For the show, Joe was incredible but a little hard to wrap my head around. I probably should have watched a DVD of him before going to this concert to have prepared myself.
Yeah dude if you are going to review someone do your homework so you did not so I give you an F for lack of preparation. Not very professional I would think. My two cents

Re: Hollywood, Fl.

Okay review, not great, and not particularly professional but that's not what it was.  He clearly stated some things were personal preference, so be it.  While I thought Joe's tone at the Bob Carr center in Orlando on Monday was awesome, other venues may not be so good.  I saw him twice at the Plaza in Orlando - the first year the sound wasn't great and things were muddy.  A year later, the venue revamped their sound system and he sounded AMAZING.  The playing was great both years, and I think he has basically the same rig, but the revamped sound system made a huge difference.  The statement about "I wish he hadn't played so fast" was a little strange.

I get the feeling this guy thinks of rock music being a bunch of drunks running around stage, smashing their guitars into dimed Marshall stacks.  Still, I didn't think the review was particularly negative, just a little weird.

On the other hand:

After that song, there was a real drum solo that was kind of interesting, but as someone pointed out, "It’s time for the bathroom break."

Tal's solo was awesome.  Reviewer Fail.

After the drum solo, Bonamassa emerged with an ESP style guitar and did a different violin bit with the keyboardist playing very long chords under him.

Um, no, that's his Music Man.

70's Firebird. Yikes! Octave pedal Yikes!  The best way to insult a tech is to say they must of went to Full Sail. Now I know why.  Seems like they sent a robot to the show.  Again.  Yikes!
I can dig it if they don't like the show but that review was  cub reporter going to his first arena concert.  Again. Yikes!

Dan for the record.  What year is "treasure" aka your Firebird 1?  For Fullsail's sake and their teaching syllabus.

I laughed so hard when I read that comment, and the ESP one. Dude needs to research his gear before he posts a misleading review about a respected professional. As for the actual review part, I believe he contradicted himself too many times to be taken seriously. Keep rockin' Joe!

Re: Hollywood, Fl.

lol When that came in on my news feed I couldn't believe my eyes. Thus the lead in to entice a read of the link. Wow, that guy had his head somewhere. Good one Joe.

That moron might be better off sticking to reviewing Chuck E Cheese's.

Artist says to critic: "I'd like to hear your opinion of my painting."

Critic: "It's worthless!"

Artist: "I know, but I would like to hear it anyway."

Re: Hollywood, Fl.

First, let me begin by saying I was not at the show in Hollywood, Thursday night.  Hopefully, being in Columbus, Georgia a couple weeks back qualifies me to contribute to this thread, since it seems to have been the very same set list.

Although I do not pretend to know the first thing about the various guitars and sound equipment Joe uses in his concerts, I do know what I like.  Speaking strictly from my own perspective, the show in Georgia was, in a word, awesome!!!  I personally could find no fault whatsoever with the performances of anyone on that stage, on that night. A couple of minor flaws and missed notes only made the whole experience more endearing and real to me.  If I wanted "perfect", I could stay home and listen to a CD. In fact, what I saw and heard in Columbus that night, is what sends me to Joe's website almost daily now, checking for coming tour dates in the fall to see if he's coming back this way again next year.

Having said that, I think it's a little unfair to criticize the reviewer because he had a different take on the show than many of us did. The hard truth is, that when you're a public performer, be it a musician, an actor or a sports figure, every person who comes to see you is not gonna think you're spectacular.  They're just not.  Everyone does not have the same taste in music and you can't be all things to all people.

Except for several contradictory comments and an apparent tendency to display more knowledge than he actually seemed to possess, it appears that he was just expressing his personal opinion and impressions of the performance.  But it seems a little harsh to me when it degenerates into name calling.  "Dumb ****"? "Moron"? "Clown"? "Robot"?  I mean, come on guys!  Is this really the best we can do? He's probably just a kid trying to put down in words his honest view of what happened that night.

Sorry, but that's just MY opinion . . .

OK, you've seen the bad, now here's one from another reviewer at the same show. This one gets it. big_smile

A little better, at least this one was somewhat professional.  But honestly, I cringed at the term "pentatonic riffery."  I don't think a lot of people actually know what a pentatonic scale is and isn't.  Listen to Joe's (or most blues/rock players') solos and you'll hear a lot of 6ths and 9ths.  Sorry, pet peeve.

Re: Hollywood, Fl.

I'd like to put the whole "critic" thing in perspective (my perspective).

I'm a member of a classical guitar forum where the status quo is "put up or shut up"...  Its membership is made up primarily of classical guitarists (professionals and amateurs)...people who actually play, tour, or otherwise put their musical sensibilities on the line regularly.

Often, when folks spout off about another player or their own capabilities, it typically takes very little time before someone calls BS and throws out the "prove it" gauntlet.  Sometimes the call is answered and sometimes not.

The point is if you don't know how to drive the car, don't give directions.  I'm human and have my opinions like everyone else does, but sometimes things are better left unsaid.
