THIS GUY DOESNT HOLD BACK AS WRITER
POST YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS
He's right on the money about Buddy Guy. I saw him on a bill @ BB's annual Blues Brews & BBQ about 5 years ago and he never played one song start to finish and stopping to say he taught Jimi this and that. It really amounted to about an hour of hot air and became annoying early on. I would have paid the same price to hear more of Tommy Castro and Susan Tedeschi and then straight into BB. It was about as obnoxious as watching the Los Lonely Boys when they bring their father out and he hogs the rest of the show like that's what everybody came to see.

I AM SURPRISED ONLY ONE PERSON HAS READ THIS THUS FAR.
THANKS OD.
It's ironic that tickets for this show in D.C. went on sale today. The line-up sounds close to the same. This review is from 2004?. It's not just Buddy Guy riding the tide of their past with an air of entitlement. Taj Mahal, Bobby Rush..to name a few. They are the "monsters" that "we" as a collective audience have made them. Too much guilt about how unfairly they were treated in the past. The problem with all this is it crowds out the up and coming players, like Joe, who will own the blues of the future....Cathy
Exactly right - 1/2 hour of music and 2 hours of horsing around - I would never pay to see
him again.

I've seen Guy when he was "on." And it was truly an amazing experience. Guy when he's "on" smokes any blues guitarist on the planet.
And of course when he is off
then you get what is written by the writer mentioned above.
Of course when you've done it as long as he has and only relatively recently gotten the respect you've deserved, I'll give him a free pass.
buddy has been off for years now i have seen him for a long time all over new york city and there were nights that he just blew the roof off the place . but now he isn't worth seeing unless you want to tell people you saw buddy because thats about all you are gonna say . also b.b. king i have seen many times and now he is not the same doesn't play that much and does more talking then playing his band is still good . bo diddley seen him a bunch of times and he always ripped the roof of the place and now he doesn't do much of anything . it's sad to see these guys out there having to play because the record compaines rip them off so bad that they need to still play when they can't play .............well that's my 3 cents .joe
I saw Buddy a couple years ago, and it was the same. More, "See, I can play this **## too", while playing an endless stream featuring fragments of Cream, Hendrix and John Lee Hooker covers. I think there may have been one original song played the whole night. Too much of that, and not enough Buddy. When he has so many excellent songs that are his to choose from, why spend the whole evening playing covers? Hell, even after he left the stage the band ended with an instrumental version of "Smoke On The Water". But, he's a great entertainer, I'll give him that. What he did play was excellent, but it's more of him going through the motions these days. I hail him for being one of the greatest guitarists ever, that can't be denied, it's too bad he doesn't show it enough these days.
Trust me, BB King and Buddy Guy are doing better than many think.
great point joe

I hear ya Joe, these guys aren't gettin' any younger. My best friend and I always catch BB when he comes through town just so we don't miss the last time around. With his age and the diabetes it's a miracle he still performs at all. Last Jan. 29th was the last BB show I saw and he was on fire maybe after just being in Brazil touring amongst all those hot women down there or somethin'. It was the first show of his in years that truly rocked the house. I always feel my money was well spent when I see him though. I probably wouldn't waste my time goin' to see Buddy with a free ticket. Time waits for no one and it won't wait for me. I could spend that time doin' laundry or somethin'.

When he hits the stage you just FEEL him!!!

i saw bb king last year. it was a good show, lot of good stories, which was what i was expecting. however, to say things like "he can hold his own with any of the new generation of bluesmen" is out and out ridiculous and insulting to the younger guitar players. no one is denying bb the credit he is due or taking anything away from his accomplishments, and to be fair no one here really is at all as we are talking about buddy guy, but all you have to do is have seen bb king or buddy guy and then go see joe. they cant hold their own with him any more, it is a matter of prime, and i personally think giving people a pass on poor performances undermines the good ones they have put on in the past and as i said saying 70 year old men still hold their own with the younger generation is ludicrous. to me it is no different than saying yeah, michael jordan is still the best there is when he was with washington, it is just isnt true.
We're not talking about sports. Sports have numbers you can measure. Music is trickier. Point is, when Joe has the influence and clout that Buddy Guy and BB King have, then we can talk. Joe would probably say the same thing. Joe is great, one of the best of his generation. He's definitely my favorite of the new guys. But you can't deny BB and Buddy's influence. That goes for Hubert Sumlin too. Those guys can still walk on stage, play one note, and blow everybody away. Period.
When Buddy Guy can take John mayer on stage and John puts his guitar down and walks off the stage because he is not worthy, that speaks volumes. This is what the blues is all about, and what makes it completely different to other genres of music. It's reverence of the past. When Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf are still spoken of as contemporary, that is showing extreme respect for the past and the history. Now, granted, sometimes the blues needs to be taken out of the past a little bit so that it will evolve, but what makes the blues so dynamic is that past and the present are equally important. They are not simply discarded.
Blessed Words of Wisdom.

well i havent seen buddy guy but from the sounds of everyone who has he isnt what he used to be. and i think you missed my point. im not talking about influence clout, or music they have made in the past. i am speaking strictly of the quality of performances now. and that those guys can still walk on stage and blow the audience away no matter how they perform speaks volumes for what they have done, but says nothing for what they are doing and sells the audience short, whether they know it or not. so to reiterate, im not talking baout ranking or anything like that. music is pretty subjective there arent definite ranks. i am not a musical performer, but if i was id have a desire to get by on talent passion and performance rather than the sheer generosity of my audience.
so in summary, a poor performance is a poor performance, even if your name is buddy guy. say they are good for what they are, which is what i say about bb king. but please dont say they blow away the young bluesmen or that younger players arent worthy, and lastly dont say they put on better shows, because it simply isnt true. have they had better and more influencial careers and maybe put on equally good or better shows in their prime? probably. is that now? no.
