Topic: Sloe Gin "A & B side concept"

I know Joe said that he wanted to go back to the feel of the old vinyl albums, where there were two sides.
Well, I've tried a few times turning my cd over, but it won't play anything! Is anyone else having trouble with this?

Bill- I think the feel is more of a concept than a physical thing done on the CD.
This is from the interview where Joe speaks about this, but like you question, it's not totally a reality.  If it were produced on vinyl, the song Sloe Gin would end side A.

"Tom: The one-sheet that came with the review copy of Sloe Gin quotes you as saying you wanted to do an A/B-side thing with the album. That still the case?

Joe: To me, it's like Side A/Side B, with "Sloe Gin" being the end of Side A and the rest of it being Side B. "Sloe Gin takes you to a certain point, then on Side B we have different things like "Black Night" and "India". I think with this album, out of any of them, the listener will not be bored and won't be, 'Oh, it's just the same thing over and over again. He had two good songs and he filled in the rest.' That's not the way I like to do things. Hopefully, it's enjoyable from track one to track eleven."

Bill-we're the same age so you can relate to these conversations I've had with my kids...they jump around between itunes, playing favorite songs on CD's...especially my 16 year old, he rarely listens to one CD from start to finish on a regular basis, but listens to music constantly!!! He will listen to a new CD all the way through the first time, pick out his favorites, then maybe never listen to that CD entirely again.

I speculate that is maybe what Joe was thinking.  Some of our back in the day music, we knew the album so well, always knew what was going to play next in sequence! And, our music was so good, there was no need to skip around...the albums didn't have a bunch of filler songs! Just my 2 cents on the matter...Sloe Gin fits the bill for playing from start to finish. For me, Had To Cry Today forced me to skip around the CD...like my kids would do!

Funny Bill-It crossed my mind and then I thought , nah, Bill doesn't usually kid around, I don't want him to feel silly.  HaHa, jokes on me, that's it, no more Mrs. Nice Guy!

Angela, thanks for considering my feelings...but I've got pretty thick skin.
I guess I could have borrowed one of Patty's smiley faces, but sarcasm doesn't usually come with a smiley face.

Re: Sloe Gin "A & B side concept"

Interestingly enough... there's a somewhat clever invention called DualDisc.

Often the DualDisc is a DVD one side and a CD the other side (no idea how they came up with it but it's quite a cool idea). Maybe one day they could do one that's a CD on both sides and do one half of an album on each side?

Who knows what the future holds for music.

I'm sickened to have seen music being made available on USB flash drives. It's so silly. Why do it?!

CD for the win. DualDisc for the win! DVD! Not digital music or USB flash drives containing records!

Re: Sloe Gin "A & B side concept"

Y'all are crackin' me up!!

This cd is good from start to finish. Even in the past, often an album wasn't, unfortunately.

Hey, even in the printed piece one side is done in the lighter blue and the other in the darker blue. Okay, I'm sure that was way more info than anyone would care about.

But yes, it does have the feel of a WHOLE album, not just a couple of hits and then everything else.

Just helping to spread the word about going to see GOOD bands and GOOD live music as often as possible!!!

Re: Sloe Gin "A & B side concept"

His first four solo cds were great from start to finish also.  The whole album concept was on those.  I see this record as no differently than his others in a whole album concept.  You even had the hidden track on SILT.  And it was a good one to finish off the album.

Those were WHOLE albums and not just a few good songs and filler.  That is what makes Joe one of the best artist around.  The quality of all the songs on his albums.
