Re: The Football Topic

Sadly and tragically, this is the main football story in Holland. The Dutch FA has canceled all amateur games next weekend, pro games will start with a minute's silence, and all players will wear black armbands. Most other Dutch sports associations holding competitions this weekend will also observe a minutes silence. My fear is that this may lead to more incidences of violence, as it is widely known to which particular ethnic minority the three perps belong, and there are widespread calls for the harshest possible punishments to be meted out.

Three to be charged over Dutch football linesman death

Prosecutors in the Netherlands say they will charge three players in connection with the death of a linesman in a Sunday league football match.

The two 15-year-olds and a 16-year-old will face broad charges in connection with the death of Richard Nieuwenhuizen.

The three remain in custody ahead of their court appearance on Thursday.

The prosecutor's office said the investigation was continuing and witnesses were still being questioned.

Mr Nieuwenhuizen had been running the line for his son's team, Buitenboys. After the match he was attacked by members of the opposition, the Amsterdam club Nieuw Sloten.

He collapsed hours after the assault, fell into a coma and died in hospital on Monday.

The Dutch Football Association has cancelled all amateur matches for the coming weekend as a mark of respect for Mr Nieuwenhuizen. A minute's silence will be observed at professional games.

Richard Nieuwenhuizen officiated as linesman each week at Buitenboys, the club said.

The assault has been widely condemned in the Netherlands. Sports Minister Edith Schippers, the Dutch FA and the coach of the country's most famous club, Ajax, have expressed disbelief and outrage.

And Sepp Blatter, the president of the world governing body, Fifa, has written to the president of the Dutch FA to express his "sadness and distress".

"Football is a mirror of society and sadly, the same ills that afflict society - in this case violence - also manifest themselves in our game, " Mr Blatter added.

Nieuw Sloten said it intended to ban for life the players found to be responsible, that it had pulled their team from the league and temporarily suspended all its operations as a club.

Re: The Football Topic

I meant to post on this yesterday having been able to find some more detailed reports.

That it should have occurred in Holland is (to me) a surprise, but maybe nothing should surprise us any more. These problems are everywhere.

I think that although this incident, and it's outcome, are at the extreme end of the problem, there should be recognition that this is and has been a massive problem for many, many years.

I haven't played the game at any level since a serious leg break in '95 but the last 5 years I played were at a much lower 'fun' standard for me. Here I witnessed official referees and club representatives acting as linesman receive both verbal and physical abuse. I wouldn't countenance playing Sunday football because frankly the threat of injury and abuse both on and off the field was way too prevalent.

There were teams that were well known for their deliberate violent conduct and it was used as a means to intimidate other clubs before the fixtures.

The leagues know the culprits but as they are made up of committee's containing representatives of these clubs nothing is ever properly done.

This is a horrific and appalling crime and should serve as the line in the sand for amateur footballers in Holland or anywhere else. There should be a ZERO tolerance of any kind of abuse physical or otherwise to anyone officiating a football match or any kind of match for that matter.

We talk of the  'Bosman Ruling' as being the day football changed forever with professional player contract freedom but I would say that 'Nieuwenhuizen day' would be a far far better name to remember as the day thuggery and abuse was permently outlawed from the amateur and professional game.

No one wishes to see the many punished for the actions of the few, but clubs with bad disciplinary records should be identified and if no behavioural improvements can be implemented these clubs should be forced to disband.

These teams are known, the players are known, so the national and regional FA's around the world should take the lead.

Clean up the game from bottom up and the top down. If we meet somewhere in the middle at some point, football as a sport, and the generations to come who wish to play it will be the benficiaries.

Re: The Football Topic

A good series of matches today with every victor snatching the spoils at the death.

Bitterly disappointed about the Hammers not holding on with 15 minutes to go. We have a poor record against the scouse and I would have settled for a draw beforehand but to conceed 2 goals like that. A bitter pill.

I'm sure Spurs fans feel the same way, but a defeat at Everton is no shame these days.

United triumphed again almost in 'Fergie Time', but having a good goal disallowed earlier it was probably a fair result.

Bit tight in there at the moment from 12th to 5th. I hope Big Sam can keep us in the mix until the festivities are over, which is traditionally when the Hammers, like the decorations...come down!

It makes a change, not to concede before we start playing.
After watching it - yep, i thought it was fair result; marred only by the few idiots who think it's clever to throw things at players - 19 arrests at this one alone!  Does someone have to die first before anything is done!!

Predictably it is all the media is talking about now. Whilst I think objects being thrown happens far more often than it should at all matches, it is clear that at emotional derby fixtures the risk will be heightened.

I don't like the idea of a screen behind the goal although it is prevalent at many stadiums in Germany. The clubs have the main responsibility here along with their stewarding contractor and they should be ensuring it does not happen. There are some simple solutions for things like players taking corners being exposed. Stewards could move into a protective position whilst they monitor the crowd at this moment in the game. If this isn't practical due to the nature of the stadium then perhaps some kind of 'Batting net' whether permanent or temporary should be considered in these areas.

The whole crowd should not be punished for the acts of a few, but they should be viewed as extreme acts.

The players also have a responsibility not to celebrate in this fashion. Personally I would have the advertising hoardings raised so they can't jump over or get behind them. Players should keep their celebrations on the ptich. I don't like this current trend and never have. In an away game situation it is incitement even if it is before their own fans.

But this matter lays firmly with the clubs. City today, maybe United tomorrow. Find the offenders and ban them...for life.

Nice work from this team of Greek kids. A well worked goal and well worth watching. It would put many pro sides to shame.

Re: The Football Topic

For those of you interested in a little grass-roots:

the last match of our season this morning and it was one of those "glad to be alive" bright sunny morning playing on a pitch in the middle of the beautiful countryside.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8249/8665 … 1f66_b.jpg

We won it 5-nil against a team who were far better than the final score tells you, - at half time we were only 1-nil up after our keeper had kept us in the game with some very brave saves. Second half we pushed on and they folded after going 2-nil down, - it is all about character and conviction at this age (14).

I have been more selective this year with the team, - a squad of 17 and only able to take 14 to a match so far less rotation with the better players playing all of the games whist the marginal ones were rotated,  nobody ever missed 2 games in a row as still believe that it is still about developing the boys game at this age.

We finished second in our league and each boy will get a trophy and the league ceremony next week. Firmly believe that we could have got 1st were it not for our keeper being away for both games against the team that finished top.

Not good weather this winter at all, so pitches were awful, - our small fast wingers did not have good seasons if you look at statistics and we had to resort to playing long-ball far too often for my liking. Some boys matured this year noticeably so those once weak players became very useful physical players, a few got fatter and slower and parents refuse to believe that they have a fitness problem around the corner but the stop watch, records and requirement for an XL adult shirt show otherwise. I moved our left footed winger out as striker as he has wonderful balance and quick feet. He then scored 42 goals in 14 games to win a Club record, a league and age group golden boot. He got a hat trick today taking a boot in the face to score his third so ended his season off the pitch but full of smilies.

Next season after promotion we will find it tougher so we are having a debate if to become a fully selective team where only the best play each week. The boys and parents need to decide that one, - not sure that some of them understand the consequences of doing so.

Re: The Football Topic

Delighted that my Hammers are finally truly safe, after a great last three games that saw us take six points from four tough games, including a point at Anfield (a minor miracle,) and that we can now aim to finish ninth! big_smile

Suarez. :fp Nothing else left to say.

Ajax are on course for their their third successive title, if they don't drop any more points.

Very much looking forward to Bayern-Barca, though I fear that Bayern may just be too good right now. Much will depend on how fit Messi is when he returns from injury.

Re: The Football Topic

Agreed George. For us at the moment it is a case of 'being there' and remaining there.

Still criticism of how the Hammers play sometimes, but everytime I have seen them the 'long ball' is no more prevalent as with some other teams. However, much as I quite like him, I hope the Hammers don't sign Carroll - certainly not at that money. He was never worth 35 milli and he isn't worth 18mill. At 80 grand a week I would rather see some other faces.

There are some great players in the Bundesliga at the moment who would be much better purchases! For the Hammers though next season is the real test. They must remain in the Prem if they are to make the switch to the Olympic stadium even remotely successful.

As for Bayern-Barca, that is a tasty one. Munich are on a huge crest right now. They won again 1-6 away at Hannover on Saturday. That said, Barca play the way Munich do so a lot of it could be cancelled out. I think a draw could be on the cards this week and then it is all to play for. But who knows?

Bayern are all over the news at the moment because club President Uli Hoennes has admitted stashing god knows how many millions in a swiss bank accounts. He's already paid up 6million euros in an effort to avoid a jail term. How the mighty will be fallen. He has been very vocal over the years about the way clubs outside Germany are funded and although his personal finances don't influence his view on that subject, unfortunately his words on finance will not be taken seriously in the future.

All good fun

Re: The Football Topic

and when you think that football has reached the lowest point with the Suarez incident (which deserves no debate) and along comes the perfect pass from Rooney and the most perfect finish from van Persie to restore your complete faith in the game. If that first half seals the league title, fair play, well done Man Utd deserving champions, nobody I have seen has come close to that this season in the Premiership, nothing more to say.

Re: The Football Topic

Difficult to believe that Munich have just put 4 past Barcelona. I never thought of them as a 1 man team but it looks that way really.
I admire that they stick t their principles even when 2 down but really, when you haven't had a shot on goal in almost 65 minutes, I think you need to be trying for something else.

That said, the 2 nd and 3rd goal should never have stood. Offside and then a clear foul by Mueller.
Bar ca deserved to lose, for sure. But by 4. I don't think so. Looks like it is Bayern's year.

Their president is a criminal fraudster, their players cheat, and despite voicing their concerns last week that they were becoming too strong in the Bundesliga they have today, the day before Dortmund play in the other semi final, announced they have signed Dortmunds star player Mario Goetze for next season.

Munich win. But with a sour taste I think.

You saved me the effort, Mike. Totally agree with all you have written. Allowing the third goal in particular to stand was an absolute disgrace. I also couldn't believe that Tito didn't tey to change things sooner than he did. Messi was clearly not fit and lost the ball almost every time he received it, Sanchez was his usual useless self, and Pedro invisible. Villa should have come on much sooner, possibly Tello for some speed down the wing, or Thiago or Cesc. The midfield had nowhere to get rid of the ball, and tap-tapping it around when you're already 2-0 or 3-0 down is kind of pointless in a CL semi.

The way the Goetze move was announced, and the move itself leaves, as you say, a bad taste as Bayern yet again buys up the opposition's best players. Having said all that though, certainly after last year's final, and the way they have dominated this season, Bayern deserves to win the CL.

Yes please, let it be Wigan. tongue

Re: The Football Topic

Watched the Dortmund game yesterday and was DELIGHTED to see them spank Real so convincingly.

Lewandowski was outstanding and I suspect Bayer must now think they are spending 37 million euros on the wrong player!
Manchester United try to get him with Kagawa last year but it was a no go. He is the real deal. His third goal yesterday was great quick thinking and even quicker footwork.
It is not inconceivable that Real could pull back in Madrid to 3-0 but I hope not.

There is a theory here that Bayer leaked the Goetze deal before the Dortmund game to cause Borussia some problems. Some be live they don't want to face them in the final. Dortmund is probably he one team they DON'T fancy their chances against.

I hope they both get through though. That will be a proper final in London. With any luck, and some justice, Dortmund win and Bayern can wait another year!

Re: The Football Topic

I agree Brack.
They are not, or should not be a one man team, but with or without him, in both games, there was precious little penetration in the final 3rd. Certainly not against Bayern's well marshalled and drilled defence.

Last night 'Tika-Taka', or as the Gremans call it 'Tika-Kacka', was almost abandoned, but it made no difference. Must have been galling for the Spanish fans to see Bayern's version of the craft being so ably demonstrated. Some of Munich's close quarters passing was very impressive.

Bayern didn't really seem in any danger I thought. Once past half time there was virtually zero chance for Barca. Robben's goal, cutting in like we've seen a hundred times on his left foot and trying to curl a shot past the keeper, was just reward for his industry. Robben doesn't have much of a right foot so I never fully understand why defenders don't get closer and block this route. The best he can do with his right foot is stand on it or deliver an average cross. An illustration of Barca's current malaise was they allowed him the time and space to try his favourite routine once more. To be fair he took the shot early and that caught the defence out too.

It was an impressive performance by Bayern. It is right that the two German clubs are there. Dortmund are about the ony team that can keep Muncih honest and although Munich will be favourites it isn't clear cut. Some romantics are predicting Dortmund will win with Goetze scoring the fairytale winner. Don't know about that.

Common sense says Bayern will be 3rd time lucky this year. They are driven to win it, or so it seems, but thats fine. Nothing Klopp likes more that pricking balloons and bubbles!

In an interview post Tuesday Lewandowski indicated himself that he might be playing for Bayern next year or in the future. I don't understand it. I really don't. You have won 2 leagues titles and 2 cups with Dortmund and now stand in a Euro final with them. Whats the point of going to another German club to do it again? Go elsewhere and make it count if you have to but going to your clubs biggest rivals. I hope a prem club comes in with a better offer, or personal terms. Lewandowski would be a big hit in the Premiership. No question in my mind about that. Man City anyone? He'd be a perfect Arsenal player for sure.

Roll on the final anyway.............

Re: The Football Topic

I haven't paid too much attention to the Championship other than Cardiff finally securing promotion after years of bridesmaidery.

I was shocked though to see that Wolves are almost certain cop a second relegation to Div 1 (or the old 3rd Division). What a calamitous fall for the club. I hope Saunders gets the chance to continue. Whether he is any good or not I don't know, but at some point the club must stabilise itself, the management and playing staff. Reads like injuries have been key, but probably as well too many players on good contracts who have just haven't justified their worth. When will these guys realise they have a fantastic life compared to the rest of us, doing something most of us would have paid to do, let alone be paid for it!

Sad to see all the same. Looking at the championship there are so many teams with prem experience now. Getting out of that division is so hard, and getting back into it won't be easy for Wolves either.

Here's hoping for a miracle today for them, but I don't see it.
