I think just a regular PRS (Custom) STANDARD 24 model will get you pretty much any guitar sound you'd need, or at least close to it. I'm talking just from a guitar to amp standpoint. No processing, effects etc..

They're made from the best woods & gorgeous looks aside:
-They produce great humbucking tones.
-Coil splitting so you can really get snappy thinner sounds of a Strat and even jazzy tones.
-Necks are very comfortable.
-Easy to restring, no having to wind strings around a post.
-Hard tail or Tremolo bridge.
-Comfortable weight.
-Smoothest turning pots I've ever seen.

These things are just top notch quality from top to bottom. You can see it and feel it when you pick one up. Both of mine are over 20 years old and not a single wire or input jack has come loose, no pots ever gone bad or seized up on either of them. Can't say that for any other guitar I've owned or own.

A friend of mine has one and they are great guitars. I have played a few and never really enjoyed the feel of them. I think i just prefer the more vintage feeling DGT. For me the dgt is my favourite prs. There will always be compromise with trying to use just one guitar for everything but a few tricks will help. I did a quick reshuffle of my pedal board last night and have placed a love pedal les Lius after my line 6 m5. With the graphic EQ setting my DGT is now sounding more like a strat. Side by side with my strat it's pretty close.

I agree with all your moments about prs guitars, I researched the Grissom or about three years until I had saved up enough money for one. I could have had it sooner but wanted the 10 top and bird inlays. The pots are fantastic so smooth, the extra volume pot on the Grissom s useful too. Coupled with the treble bleed caps it's a great guitar. Mines not without its mods though. I've just installed a tremel-no and I have replaced the back strap button for a Schaller locking type. Nothing drastic but mods none the less.

For me, if i had to pick just one guitar it would be my Albert Lee with the MM90's.

Though I find it very difficult to pick just one guitar because I love my Silo Specials as well.  sad

If your gonna have one guitar to do a whole set for a covers band then a strat hss will do all your sounds especially with coil tap!!

After ages of trawling the web, and trying various things I have come to the conclusion that the only guitar that can claim to do it all is the line 6 Tyler variax. I don't know why I am scared of it. I have had digital amps, and have several digital effects and owned my fair share of digital stuff and when I record I record digitally. So why am I afraid of a digital guitar. Is it because it doesn't have the mojo of a les Paul, prs,  strat, tele or gretsch? Perhaps the answer is to get one and transplant it into something. I've already hacked holes in my classic vibe tele. Perhaps I should hack bigger ones and just do it.

I think it depends on what you think doing it all means.

For me it doesn't mean it has loads of sounds it means its basic design allows me to cover a wide range of music and situations.

It doesn't exist and I have admitted defeat. No one guitar can rule them all. My Strat will never sound like my PRS DGT and my DGT will never sound like my strat. My Tele sits somewhere in the middle of both of these without ticking all the boxed either.

Such a tough call...

My opinion would be one of these in no particular order:

- Gibson ES-345 (Yes, I said 345....the varitone can get you close to some single coil'ish tone goodness).

- Strat (what else can be said about what is, sorry Joe, the most popular and probably most recorded guitar in history).

- Les Paul (take that guitar you have my friend and get a wiring harness and some new pickups that will allow for coil splitting, in phase, out of phase, etc....  I believe Torres Engineering may sell one).
