Topic: Rock 'N' Roll D.O.A.: Brian Jones

With all the hoopla about the Stones lately I thought I'd mention the forgotten founder and creative genius of the greatest rock band, Brian Jones.  Before he was found floating in his swimming pool he really was the instrument that coaxed Mick and Keith to what they'd become.  I listen to all their early stuff and am so amazed how ultra cool they were back then.  When the Beatles were singing "She Loves You", in '64, the Stones were doing this......

What a cool old song. As relevant today as in '65. Yes, he was the spark.

Great sample of their blues roots, but 99.9% sure thats synched.

Ya think?  Guess the harmonica was the giveaway.  Here's Brian on slide guitar on what would be his last album with the band.

he could be a bit bitchy at times, but I guess that just goes with the talent level. Beggars Banquet is one of the greatest blues albums of all time, except that Sympathy for the Devil and Street Fighting Man don't seem to go with the rest of the songs, imo. Check out Dear Doctor, funny as hell for a blues song. Sad that we lost him so young.

Watched some stuff on him last night and found out that he was both a contentious personality and a musical genius.  He was also self-destructive and like Morrison and Moon seemed destined to an early grave.  Interestingly, he did not drown in his swimming pool, but was murdered by a disgruntled construction worker.
He was the band's founder, naming them after a Muddy Waters' song and was the person who created their bad boy image.  Though Mick and Keith loved the blues, it was Brian who drove them down that path and directly introduced a whole new generation to the blues.  Me included.

- and an interesting story behind that song as I am sure a lot of you know;  the Muddy Waters song was actually taken from Robert Petway's song "Catfish Blues" which had the Rollin Stones words in it.

And as for Brian's death:
