Re: The Mentulls

I've just picked up the second edition of the Classic Rock Blues Magazine and scanned the "Free CD" contents and there it is!

Track 14: "I Got The Blues" by The Mentulls - Congratulations.

The magazine listing of the tracks describes the band as "blues-rockin' tykes", "proper old school" and their second album The Long Road to Home as "blistering, blustering" and mentions the band's tour with Wishbone Ash to the Netherlands.

Great that The Mentulls are getting some well earned exposure - congrats. big_smile

Add my congratulations to that - way to go lads!!

They've also got a couple of support dates here in the North-East with Dr Feelgood as well a some further afield with Focus.

Was talking with Keith (manager) and Andrew (blues rockin' tyke) at the week-end and work on album #3 is going well and should be available September onwards. Something to look forward too.

Re: The Mentulls

I saw The Mentulls supporting Wishbone Ash in October at Bilston and Chesterfield - they are really amazing musicians and I hope they succeed. It is great to see such young guys writing their own material as well as doing great covers.

I played their CD constantly in my car for 3 days recently!!

Re: The Mentulls

Missed the lads playing at Mainsforth last week, but heard they did really well, despite electrical problems (someone at the hall must have been putting last of the holiday money in the electric meter...). Caught up with Andrew and Keith (manager/dad) the next night at Marcus Bonfanti gig; always good company.

The good folk of Holland can get a taste of The Mentulls as they're opening for Andy Powell's Wishbone Ash for 3 of their Dutch dates; Leeuwarden, Uden & Roermond in January before an appearance at the Skegness Rock & Blues Festival. See above for more detail.

Re: The Mentulls

Nipped down to Guisborough on Saturday to catch The Mentull's home gig; and well worth it. Not only has it been first time in a while I've seen they play (rather than enjoying a pint and a gig with them) but first time seeing them as a headliner, rather than openers, and they have really grown (not just because Kath at Guisborough has to stand on tip-toe to reach Andrew's microphone).

They served up 2 forty-five minute sets, highlighting their newest release as well as a bight, shiny new instrumental, Reflections, which not only shows how much their playing is coming on, but how much they are developing as writers. They're so confident now, the number of covers they feature in their set is dropping to Joe B's So That's How It Is, Hendrix' Red House and the Joe B twist on Just Got Paid.

A good part of the set is instrumental (or instrumentull?) but not just to showcase Andrew's guitar skills; as well as playing off brother Jamie on keys, Nick Colman on drums gets ample chance to shine, matching fills with Andrew's riffs and pulling out a very impressive solo. Okay, so drum solos smack a bit of the "prog", but that's key to The Mentulls' sound and the lads carry it off in style.

They certainly managed to pull not only one of the biggest audiences for Guisborough in recent times, but a good number of people closer to their own age. The really deserved a good night and proved they are ready to stretch for bigger audiences. Definitely moving up the learning curve.

Re: The Mentulls

See the lads got a mention in this month's Classic Rock magazine. Okay, so it was one line in the review of the Skegness fesitval, but it was more postive than comments made about several other bands; and, they spelt the band's name right - they're taking notice!
