This is VERY saddening.... just in case anyone is looking into preventative stuff, I've put together some links that could be helpful.

The Guitar Vaults has a website where you can register guitar serial numbers. Dweezil Zappa endoreses this site and has a nice intro video. They let you register one guitar for free, but then it's around $5 to register up to 20 more guitars.

You can install RFID chips in your guitars, pretty much the same as someone would do to a dog. $100 does five instruments.
