Topic: Guitarists' Guitarists or People You Might Want To Check Out if....

I've been meaning to do something like this for awhile to stand up and applaud guitarists I find extremely talented that might be under the radar.  These guys or gals aren't speed merchants, though I'm sure they could.  No...these people do things to strings that make their guitars growl, bark, scream like a cat in heat.  They can play front, back and upside down (Jimi).

Naturally Joe would head this list as he's the greatest walking around right now and then there's the usual suspects like Santana (60's/70's), Beck, Page, Buddy Guy, Clapton of the old guard and newbies like Gary Clark Jr, Virgil, Davy Knowles, Eric Steckel, Devon Allman, etc.

The guys though I'll throw out are less known and I'll report them as I hear about them.  Two I have for today and they're Rick Holmstrom and Eric Krasno.  RH plays in Mavis Staples band, has played with The Mannish Boys and has a few solo albums.  His latest solo, Cruel Sunrise, is the one to check out.  I just get mezmerized listening to it and this guy's an incredible player.

Eric Krasno is just a guitar junkie, following his own muse.  I get goosebumps listening to his new stamp on "Manic Depression" that Hendrix would've been proud of and understands the finer points of fusion jazz.  "Enhorabuena" sounds like a lost song off Abraxus.

Love those instruments John Emil is playing.  Makes them sound like a pulsating heart.

Thanks for the heads up on this guy.  From the first note he had me and I'll definitely be checking him out further.  This is the kind of stuff I was hoping to get from this thread.

Hard to get away from the main body of his work which he did with The Ventures on and off for 30 years, but there are some great moments in there. being a Louisiana native there's some really hot "swamp" pickin' in there. In the 60s, he did loads of session work for artists as diverse are Elvis and The Monkees (almost comparable to our Jimmy Page). Don't know if there is any solo stuff out there, but if there is, I bet it's worth a listen.

Jim Campilongo is someone I've admired for a long time and not just because of Norah Jones.  This guy easily falls in this category.  here's a nice cut off his Orange album.

Peter Parcek falls easily into this category.  His album from 2010, The Mathematics of Love, is a remarkable first effort.  A nice mix of obscure covers and some damn good originals.  The album starts off with Peter Green's "Show Biz Blues" and Parcek really does it justice.  Here's a nice video of the song:

There's a slew of other great songs like the duet with Ronnie Earl on "New Year's Eve" that gives your head a workout and the ultra cool "Tears Like Diamonds".

Rumaldo Ortiz (just goes by Rumaldo). He's also the founding member of the melodic rock band Angel Edge. Discovered him while looking up New Mexico Music Award winners for blues. He's won two Best Blues Song awards and also a Best Song - Metal Category when he was doing the rock thing in the 90's. He won Best Blues in 2006, finalist in 2007 (lost to Ryan McGarvey),  and won Best Blues Song again in 2008 (won against Ryan McGarvey).

Thanks for the welcome! As my user name suggests, I'm also a Larry Carlton fan. I'm also a fan of smooth jazz influenced contemporary blues guitar and vice versa. Generally if a blues artist attempts jazz it sucks (like SRV's attempt at jazz was awful IMO), and the when a jazz guitarist attempts straight ahead blues, it comes off too polished or without much feel - again IMHO, but I like this blues thing Larry Carlton does on this vid below. The only thing is I don't care for the end of the song and the guitar work leading up to the ending. The rest is great though.

P.S. Jeff Golub is another smooth jazz guitarist that admittedly loves the blues, but I'm not so sure he's a true blues guitarist or that he comes across that way in his blues tunes. Somewhat contrived versus a true blues feel. Still does some nice blues though. Rumaldo's guitar playing has some smooth jazz elements like what I'm referring to with Carlton and Golub. Robben Ford is another guitarist in this category of smooth jazz influenced guitarists.
