Re: Condolences to Patty

I just finished speaking with Patty, things are a bit more settled now that arrangements have been finalized. Her spirits seem to be up a bit this evening as we shared some stories about her husband that I could tell through the phone were bringing a smile to her face.

Here is the link to the obituary, which I believe will only be online for another day.  http://fairfield-ia.villagesoup.com/p/d … ick/925727

If anyone needs additional information or a contact for memorials please send me a PM here or contact me through FB.

Re: Condolences to Patty

For anyone wanting to send a memorial, here is the information. The family asks that all memorials be directed to Patty and Don's son Bobby.  Patty said that she will check in here as soon as possible, but is still a bit overwhelmed at this time with everything that needs to be taken care of.

Re: Condolences to Patty

Today I shed a few tears at a funeral for a man I had never even met. Patty and Bobby put together the most amazing funeral for their departed husband/father. I am 55 years old and I couldn't guess how many funerals I have been to, but this one was by far and away the most meaningful and heartfelt. Patty got up and talked about Don and was followed by Bobby who read an entry that he had  found in one of his father's journals. Then person after person got up and talked about what Don had meant to them, many were chiropractic patients and several spoke of how he had helped them even when they couldn't pay for the service; he must have been an amazingly gifted healer. One man got up and sang a song a-cappella and a woman had a poem that someone had written about Don. I wish I had kept count of how many people got up to speak. The last one to talk about his experience with Don was the man that he had been taking guitar lessons from for the last nine years and he played a medley of favorite songs that Don had learned- starting with some CCR. Scattered throughout the service were several recorded songs including Jeff Buckley's cover of "Hallelujah" (where I lost it) and of course the service ended with Joe Bonamassa's "Asking Around For You".

It was a real tribute to a man I wish I'd had the opportunity to have known. It was the kind of service that made you reassess the amount of good that you are doing with your life and ponder if anyone would have reason to get up and speak from the heart at your own funeral. It was the new standard by which I will measure all funerals and Patty is to be commended for a job superbly done in the most trying of times.

Thanks for that 'report', Graymtr. Your words took me back five and a half years, when I was the one to have to stand up and speak......
