Topic: Looking for a High Gain Mashall type stomp box.

OK, so I have about wrapped up the tuner pedal search now I need to find a HIGH GAIN monster pedal since I'm not going to crank my amp up.  Right now I'm really liking the Wampler Plextorion.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DdruianYYA

Before you gear heads get all you gotta crank an amp to get the Marshall tone and it needs to be a Marshall... I have already come to the conclusion that its going to cost more then I'm willing to spend, my back said I shouldn't get a big heavy combo, and last my band mics everywhere and I'm told 90% of the time to turn down.  Kind of hard to crank when everyone said to turn down.

So can you guys suggest something to me?  I really like this one because basically they said its a JCM 800 in a box, an amp that I used to own several years ago and loved.  I'm basically wanting to have 1 distortion and 1 overdrive going to a clean amp.  The Wampler would be drop tunings and anything that needs balls to it.  The overdrive I'm looking at (Lovepedals Kalamazoo) is a medium gain overdrive that I figure would work well with the classic rock stuff and the country I'm playing.  Feel free to chime in with any suggestions on Overdrive pedals as well.  Basically my budget for an amp next year is switching over to these high end pedals so don't let sticker price stop you from making a suggestion.

Try the DigiTech RP 500. I bought one. It has an 800 & 900 amp setting built in. Plus you can use it as individual stomp boxes. I picked mine up for $150. Its great!  I use it at church and go straight into the pa. Works fantastic!  Sounds great as individual boxes for my class 5 amp as well. Check into it.

Re: Looking for a High Gain Mashall type stomp box.

Nothing wrong with multi effect stuff, but in  my personal experience I've found the pedals that do primarily one thing well are worth the price and they do that thing much better. Nothing at all wrong with a single pedal for your high gain needs. Nobody is gonna be able to tell otherwise really. Wampler seems to make some good stuff and its not super expensive.

Overdrive: I've tried a handful and I hate splitting hairs over things but it seems to me most all are based on the ts808 sound and thats why I don't get into the nitty gritty of the endless pedals on the market. I like the ts808 but I also have the MXR M77 (badass overdrive "modified") it sounds IDENTICAL to the ts808 and has a bit more gain plus a 100k tweakable knob. I really like that the best and its under 100 bucks. Well worth the price, and its gold!... But seriously, I think its a great pedal. I have zero interest in anything else.

Re: Looking for a High Gain Mashall type stomp box.

It seems what you need is a distortion rather than overdrive pedal. I highly recommend the MI Audio Crunch Box. I use it going into a clean JTM45-BB combo and can get any level of Marshall gain I want.
Apparently it is based on the original Marshall Guv'nor pedal and I think that's what Gary Moore used for 'Still got the Blues'. Les Paul+Guv'nor+JTM45.
I also use a TS set clean as a boost pedal.

There is so many pedals that says it has marshall in the box, but here is one more for you to think about

If they keep telling ya to turn down, id find a new band!! smile

Re: Looking for a High Gain Mashall type stomp box.

Ive been using one of those Timmy pedals lately and getting some cool tones out of it - may not have quite the crunch you are looking for though, but a nice little unit nonetheless!

Re: Looking for a High Gain Mashall type stomp box.

Nah, these guys are just too cool and 1 gal on keyboards.  I'm not the issue with volume its the other guitarist and the drums.  I knew it was too loud when I started my sound check... I even asked am I a bit loud?  And the response was yes you've gotta turn down.  Its an awesome little fender amp and when it is cranked I'm so happy with it... Its not Marshall crunch but it comes close to vintage Marshall crunch, just lacking the bottom end.  But it sustains for days with it even at low volumes.  But if I can't crank up loud my method of turning the guitars volume to clean up the sound really doesn't work and the tone gets muddy.  I want to basically step on the pedal for heavy stuff, for example we play "Feel Like Making Love" nice crunchy Marshall tone perfect for a Gibson to play I'll keep the neck pickup turned down and when I play the chorus I'll flip down to the in between position for the crunch, or flip down to the bridge for the lead tone.  Simple trick every body does it, but it works better with power tubes working hard.  I'm hoping instead of switching pickup I can step on a big bad Marshall in a box pedal and get more of the low end tone that my amp lacks as well as the "cranked" tone.  Finding a new band is on the condition that I can keep my old one... All the people in the band are quality players and everyone for the most part leaves their attitude at the door.  Something I think everybody hear could probably understand.

Check out the Wampler Triple Wreck.  It can do crunch, high gain, and creamy fuzz.  It is very versatile.

Gibson 60th Anniversary 1959 Les Paul Reissue, Gibson LP Standard Faded CSB, Gibson Gary Moore LP Standard, Epi Joe Bonamassa GT LP, Epi Zakk Wylde LP, Dean Michael Schenker Flying V, Jackson Randy Rhoads V, ESP/LTD George Lynch Kamikaze, EVH Striped Series R/B/W, Fender/Squire John 5 Telecaster, Fender Joe Strummer Relic Telecaster

Re: Looking for a High Gain Mashall type stomp box.

I like that, I think I want a pedal that is good at just one thing.  I doubt I tweak the pedal during a live gig and as tempting as it would be to have a 3 in one pedal I know I'm not going to adjust it.  Looks like a fantastic pedal though... I look into it more.

Re: Looking for a High Gain Mashall type stomp box.

I did not like the plextortion at all.  if money is not an issue i would consider the following:

1-Carl Martin Plexitone

2-Lovepedal Purple Plexi

3-Wampler Pinnacle (MUCH better than the plextortion IMHO)

4-Mi Audio Crunchbox

just my two cents, but that will also depend heavily on the amp, guitar, how you dial your base tone, and how you play.  But for me, these are the winners.

Amp: Firebird Musical Amplifiers
Guitars:62 LP SG , 02 FB VII, JB FB I, 76 Electra Omega, 64 Firebird V, 73 LPC, 61 Custom Tele, 59 and 60 Melody Maker
Effects: Mythos Chupacabra, Strymon Deco/Flint

Re: Looking for a High Gain Mashall type stomp box.

May I suggest something off the wall, but a damn good pedal for lower volumes, made by Tech 21, the charactor series. I bought the British, set it like a JCM 800, and love it. Cost about $160

Re: Looking for a High Gain Mashall type stomp box.

So I tried a Marshall Guv'nor from the early 90's today.  It's not the pedal I want, but it sounded fantastic.

Re: Looking for a High Gain Mashall type stomp box.

Suhr Riot or Fulltone Plimsoul! Either will do what you want, the Plimsoul is a little more tweakable but I love both equally.

The guitar player for Roger Waters "The Wall" tour (Dave Kilminster)played the Riot through the clean channel of his amp for all of the solos (including Comfortably Numb).
