Topic: Tommy Emmanuel

Didn't do a forum search... but anyone else here into Tommy? I think he's an absolutely stunning player and his version of Amazing Grace is one of my favorite ever recorded.

Tommy's a beast! absolutely amazing player, the kind that makes you resent your parents genetic code because they couldn't instill that level of talent in your own genetic blueprint.

I still need to see him live...

Re: Tommy Emmanuel

Tommy is definitely one of the best guitar players I've ever seen, and his shows are phenomenal. His laid back style allows him to really connect with the audience.

I love this video of him just hanging out on his deck at his house doing a cover of "Purple Haze': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apXSU8F8zWs

And this version of "Classical Gas" is brilliant: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S33tWZqX … ure=fvwrel

Re: Tommy Emmanuel

I'm hoping to see him too. Been a fan for a number of years now, but every now and again I get on TE kicks and he's all I listen to for a couple weeks. I listen to various songs over and over and over again.

Re: Tommy Emmanuel

The only album I listen to is 'The Day the Finger Pickers took over the World' - his duet album with the immortal Chet Atkins.  (Highly recommended)

The reason is that Tommy is first and foremost a 'live' animal.  He was born to play to an audience. Only 2 or 3 times in nearly 40 years of gigging have I ever just been 'completely blown away' by a guitarists performance, but he was one of them.

Incidentally, he's not just an acoustic player - check out the outro solo on this !!

Re: Tommy Emmanuel

Tommy is the very definition of 'entertainer'.  If you ever get the chance - go and see him live.  He knows how to work the crowd, and if you are a guitar player, you will go home and burn all your guitars. big_smile

He is also one of the nicest guys to boot.  Very down to earth and humble.

I've been lucky enough to see him 3 times live - mostly in small intimate venues.  He gives 110% each time.

I think he is getting too popular nowadays in the US etc. so I don't think we will see him play small towns like ours any longer.  He has definitely paid his dues, old Tommy (and his family) - working pubs and clubs all down the east coast of Australia.  He tells the story of having to play some gigs with greasy hands because they had to fix the family station wagon at the side of the road just so they could make it into town in time to make the gig!

Tommy Emmanuel and Martin Taylor

So, we went to see Tommy and Martin Taylor at Shepherd's Bush Empire on Saturday. Managed to get some good Stall seats. This was both our first time to watch Tommy perform, and he didn't disappoint - I'd never heard of Martin before Saturday, but he complemented Tommy to a tee.
Great night of entertainment - I would recommend - go and experience at night of guitar excellence !  wink
