Re: Sloe Gin

I got my copy in the mail today. I am currently listening to it for the third time. It's on "One Of These Days" right now. I think it's one of the best albums I've heard in a long time. I know some of the forum members will wonder why he decided to not go all out "Balls to the Wall"  gonzo rock like on some of his other albums. I think that this shows how he has matured into one of the finest all around musicians out there. It's a lot harder to play acoustic and sound as good as he does on this album. His singing is great on this one too, and to think he didn't believe that he could sing when he first started out. I think that the last song "India" sounds a lot like Leslie West on some of his first albums. Great job all around Joe, keep it up.

It's my new medicine for THE BLUES
It's Another Kind of Love

I moved my oldest to college yesterday, August 21st.  It was a miserable, cold and rainy day; my big toe is still broken and the elevator was unavailable to get to the 4th floor!!!

Even though I was physically exhausted, I couldn't sleep at all last night, Sloe Gin got me through the night.  I'm still cryin' for my baby...Yeah I know, he's 18, it's all part of life,  but I feel like I have a hole in my heart and part of me is missing...he grew up so fast, it's surreal!

"Sloe Gin, sloe Gin
Tryin´ to wash away the pain inside
Well I´m sick and I´m all done in
and I´m standing in the rain
and I feel like I´m gonna cry"

Joe, your music continues to touch my heart and my soul, I LUV YOU!!!  You didn't think for one minute that Patty is the only one that luvs you, did you? smile smile smile

Re: Sloe Gin

Hello Annelies and all others.

I am afraid that I am too much a guitar lover to be as enthousiastic about Sloe Gin as you are. Don't blaim me for that, because I can agree a lot with your opinion, but the over-arrangements with all the strings and multiple guitar dubs are a bit too much for me. When Joe reacts on the former recording of Around the bend, he comes back on his vision on the song in that period of his personal growth. I am anxious to hear Joe's  (and all fan's) view on Sloe Gin in a few years.

Fortunately there are the live performances. I have seen Joe in Pistoia Italy do some of the songs such as Sloe Gin and there you see the real Joe of my preference. The live acts go even further with the old Yes and Genesis pieces added to the jams. I really look forward to Paradiso in October to hear more of Sloe Gin in the live versions. After that I hope your information concerning the live album will become reality next year. I want to remember you all the quote Joe and Walter Trout put on the Full Circle album, when they recorded Clouds on the Horizon: "let's give a reason to hate us". That is the kind of Blues (rock) I like most and the reason I love them.

Apart from that, the acoustic recordings are excellent and well produced. For the same reason the live version of Mountain Time keeps coming back as one of my personal Joe's live bests. Also the Ten Years After's song One of these days (one of my first records in the 70's), John Mayall's Another kind of love and Black Night bring back good memories and are very good modern versions, which still carry the atmosphere of the period they were recorded (or maybe re-recorded already :-)).

In all I am happy with the album, especcialy when you look at the time schedule Joe keeps for himself. Allthough it could have been a little less at some points.

Oke, shoot me.

Hey Eric that's a totally fair assessment of your feelings on it, no shooting. I actually agree a little, things I stated elswhere on the forum regarding taking out or putting in. However, my satisfaction level is still extremely high.  Joe should do a "Frampton Comes Alive" style live CD or/and DVD (actually the audience can MAKE IT SO as much as Joe, Rick, Carmine & Bogie)...WHOMEVER you lucky dogs are that get to be the audience----man learn those song lyrics, sing along LOUDLY, go along for the ride and cheer and whoop at everything and for those who would absolutely LOVE to be there, and you know there are many....more every day!!!

Re: Sloe Gin

I just received Sloe Gin yesterday and since then I`m permanently listening to it. My first impression is very, very good. I`m so glad Joe decided to not let out the electric guitar(s).

It`s a little bit new for a Joe record, that there is much more arrangement in the songs, much more strings, keyboards, and so on. But I`m quite happy with the album so far.

Though, I agree with Eric W, that I like the raw and pure Joe in a live gig the most. I`m really looking forward to see and hear Joe in Switzerland again. My first two shows were excellent, some of the best live performances I can remember of.

Re: Sloe Gin

Eric w - I feel you on the guitar thing.

However this was released instead of an all acoustic album that was intended on being released.
I agree, the songs are good - well produced....but I'm still left looking for the next HTCT.
