Re: Afterglow

Joe,

I like that you responded and the way you did. Unfortunately it looks at first like you typed it all as its not in the usual quote format. I responded to that person so I recognized it right away.

I'm a little surprised that you don't like your own playing on it I must say though. I would imagine that you can always look back and think oh man I could have done this or that instead of what I did. Interesting and honest comment though.

BTW, I too felt that there was some sense of it getting personal with a couple of these posters. I haven't seen anything negative about this album around the web for the most part so I was surprised at how many I read last night here. The thing that got me was the ones who heard it once and that was it, it sucks. Not a fan to begin with and no point in being here IMO.

Its a very good record and seems to grow with each listen. I for one like your playing as well as the rest of the band here.

Re: Afterglow

Several times through now. Loving Midnight Sun and Cry Freedom at the moment.

First of all, here I am the listener and you the musician. You play, you sell, I buy, I hear, I judge. My criticism is not personal, it's focused on music and widely argued. As for the rules, if this is just a place where you can just cheer an artist even when -by his own admission- does not express his talent at its best, well then I must say that is not the place for me. I'm not so young anymore to go squawking behind the alleged "stars" too full of themselves, saying what they'd want to hear. I say what I think, politely, and try to argue. You should appreciate it, instead. Serious professionals listen to the criticism and try to use them as a springboard for self-improvement. They do not reply angrily like a girl to whom the hairdresser messed her hair color. It's still interesting to know more directly the personality of a star, tho. This helps to get a better idea of his overall work. Oh, and FYI the BCC forum has been shut down by J & R management (who said "censored"?).

Re: Afterglow

so long, thread...

Re: Afterglow

Mastering/production values notwithstanding, I absolutely dig Joe's solo on "Common Man." Other standouts (for me) are the riffs in "Dandelion" and the call/exchange solo in "Crawl."

Re: Afterglow

Without doubt this album reveals itself slowly but surley as all great albums do. Interesting comments from Joe on his own playing. I have to say as a musician myself Iam still blown away by how quickly BCC pull these things togther and at such a high standard.
Sometimes it just  flows, that's the magic of playing live in the studio. the only issue is if it aint flowing you get no time to come back to it, that's the risk. Hindsight is wonderful and we are all masters with hindsight, maybe Joe would approach these sessions differently next time, maybe not, but its still a great album and surley that's all that matters. I often think I could have done  better in my job, probably more often than Joe does in his!

Re: Afterglow

To change the tone of this thread a bit.  I like all of it and am trying not to compare it too the previous albums and or joe's solo stuff.  It grows on you and I think that slight imperfections make it a better album.

I hate that people have to slam Joe if they don't like it. He is only one  band member and it is a group effort.   In my opinion, it is a really good album regardless of controversy or criticism.  That is what music is all about.

I hope someday they will record again.  If not, atleast we have three great records to enjoy.

There are a million places online were you can take cheap shots and act like a child who's entitled to " real rock" guitar playing.  All I am saying is this is not the place for that. I have followed your posts over the past several months. I clearly get how you feel.  Consider your point taken. Now if I were you Bognano I would move on from this tone you take on this forum. Consider yourself welcome but tone down the Righteous indignation.

Re: Afterglow

I just received my copy of Afterglow and it looks like this topic will also sadly end before I even have a chance to enjoy the release a few times. I have tried avoiding all the drama so I could enjoy the new cd, because BCC “IS” one of the best bands of all this IMAO.

I can’t say that I am not disappointed that BCC has ended. I’M sure Joe will understand.  I fully respect, understand and will always support Joe. His solo career has and will always come first, as it should. Rick, Carmine and Tal can rest easy knowing that.

I hope that all of the positive feedback from the fans will ultimately Perivale. Creating more drama and animosity will certainly not solve anything. I hope this will be a humbling experience for all of us. Bottom line, BCC is a money maker. Everyone knows that, so with any luck! Cooler heads will prevail and BCC can agree to get back in the studio or even handful of shows next summer around NAMM or something.

Take care,
Bill

Re: Afterglow

The thread will not be taken down. I just felt the need to address a forum member who I feel consistently likes to take a very negative tone. I am truthfully very happy that for the most part you all are enjoying the "Afterglow" album.  I enjoy the feedback both good and bad.  Now if we did a cover of "Tulsa Time" like I originally wanted.  The album would of been epic!!

I am joking of course.

Enjoy kids and play nice!

Re: Afterglow

Thanks for the offer Jane, but I'm still gonna keep it handy :-) I'm sure it will lure me back.
I just wanted to add that my initial reaction may have been because I was hoping to hear more of Joe's voice on the album.
When I give it a few more listens (as you've all convinced me I should) then I'll report back.

Personally, Bloodline took a while for me to get into to (but I spent more time with it as I was a student and had spent a lot of money to import it to South Africa). But I really love "Trouble is My Business" and "Cell Block 7". You just reminded me of those times :-)

And I just noticed that my profile was registered the same day as Joe Bonamassa's :-) Makes me very happy

Re: Afterglow

Only been through the CD once but I think it's great. To each his own but I don't understand the criticism.

Off-topic, I passed within a couple of blocks of the Warner Theater in D.C. this afternoon. Counting the days until my first JB concert! Wooo-hooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Afterglow

Well, I bought the album yesterday on iTunes.  Quick listen last night, and got it on headphones now whilst working away.

First impression is 'very cool'.  I'm not getting the "Its not rock and roll" commentary at all.

However, I am thinking that the album is a bit less compressed than most mixes these days?  I'm not getting that loud 'punched in the chest' feeling as with some albums, but perhaps that is a good thing - I think too many albums are mixed overly compressed for artificial loudness these days.  Time will tell whether this one is less ear fatiguing after an hour on headphones.

I'm still liking Joe's playing on this, however I feel his guitar parts are mixed a little 'further back' than normal.  It could be also because of his tone chain on this album perhaps?  Perhaps single amp through a smaller cab?  Not sure what gear was used here.  Tone still sounds awesome, just less of it, if you know what I mean.

As many have mentioned before - I am going to give this one a few more spins before making a full conclusion.

This just oozes class!

And now I have to give the record a spin.
