Topic: Speaker for Low Wattage Amps........

I have become a fan of low wattage tube amps, say 20 watts and under. However, being most of my cabinets are Marshalls loaded with GT 75-12's, and I am wondering if there are speakers out there any of you would recommend for this application? I was thnking of maybe Vintage 30's.

Re: Speaker for Low Wattage Amps........

Tayden Ace. Incredible speaker. Love the mid-range...better than the V30s...more character.

Re: Speaker for Low Wattage Amps........

The true brit is nothing like a V30 - it is a handbuilt pre rola greenback style speaker.

But I agree it is a good ceramic option - the Tayden Ace is a celestion blue (alnico) option if that is more to your taste - check out the watford valves sound factory: -

Re: Speaker for Low Wattage Amps........

i used a 20 watt tube at times over the years and the vintage 30 celestions worked really well with even in a 4 x 12 cab.

the 25 greenbacks were also a good match but not as nice the v30 to my ears.

Thanks Guys.

I have really enjoyed the Eminence Swamp Thang for my BluesJR., that's pushing 22watts after upgrades. Very clean, and sparkely speaker. Doesn't breakup easy like a Greenback.

Re: Speaker for Low Wattage Amps........

I think it is much easier to recommend, if there's an idea what the amp will be and what's the target tone.

I have excellent experience with WGS12-65, Greenbacks, Creambacks, Eminence Reignmaker, or V30 and ToneTubbies and a bunch of others, however with different amps (a number of low watters amongst) and aiming at different tone.

Re: Speaker for Low Wattage Amps........

Hey did you convert to the 6V6 ouput tubes for that 22 watts or was it just the transformer?  I upgraded to a bigger transformer but I was told mine only pushes 18 watts with what I got.  Also if you did upgrade the power amp tubes what did you think of the amp after you were done?  I was thinking about upgrading the tube sockets and get the new transformer that pushes 30 watts!

Re: Speaker for Low Wattage Amps........

Know what? You're right... it could be 18 now. The transformer was upgraded not the sockets. I think when I asked my amp guy to check it over, he said it's closer to 22 than 18 if I remember right.

I didn't know one could push 30 watts!
