Topic: bluesville artists i have heard recently

hey friends.  i have been listening to bluesville on xm a lot recently and have decided there are simply too many good artists played here that i have never heard of, so i started writing down the ones i deemed to be worth buying.  bear in mind i have only heard one song by most of these guys so i cant really give an accurate representation of how they sound(not to mention it is hard to write down how music sounds) but i will give it a try.  i am sure a lot of you have heard of them, but i hadnt heard any of them being that i only really got into listening to the blues earlier this year.

popa chubby-dirty lie. this is probably the best of the bunch i heard. it is zeeplin like riffs with solos that to me are better.  straight blues rock.

lightin hopkins-im the crawling black snake. really old acoustic blues, but they play a shitload of old blues and i dont feel most of it is worth mentioning, this is, i am getting an album by him soon.

tab benoit. cant remember the song name or even what it sounded like. i can remember that was modern blues and was worth writing down. so look into him.

robben ford-up the line. quality modern blues, less guitar heavy than a lot of the stuff i like, but great guitar and singing nonetheless.

billy boy arnold-dirty mother fuyer-harp player, funny lyrics, have checked into a few of his other songs, the guy is good. older generation here.

craig erickson project-cant remeber song names, they played a few. really really guitar based heavy blues. this guy is on grooveyard records which essentially means hes one of the sickest guitar players in the world.

jimmy thackery and the drivers- who knows. quality instrumental. again, another great guitarist. i know i am saying that about all of them, but if you listen to this you will realize that these guys are all at the level where you cant really say who is better. all have technical ability for days and more feeling than about anyone else in music.

ronnie earl-green light. i had heard his name before, finally heard a song. this was another instrumental jam. basically a 3 minute long guitar solo that is phenomenal through out.

Hi suhl, thought you would find this interesting..Bill Wax? from Bluesville was at the Albert Castiglia show last night. I asked him if he had heard of the Hoax and he said "Ya, I know the Hoax but they aren't a blues band"..Honestly, it shocked me, so I find the list of songs you've heard comforting because it sounded like he was a bit "old school"..Cathy

they arent blues in the purest sense but if you were introducing them to people arent die hard blues fans then they wouldnt know what else to call them.  god knows i dont.  i call them blues rock, and if we are going on general terms i think the hoax would appeal more to blues fans than rock fans.

Suhl some great stuff there,poppa chubby-I think great blues/rock sound never saw him live ,but sounds like he would be very entertaing
craig erickson guys awsome. have his new cd  Big Highway more of a rock cd very classic rock sound Shine is also great another one of my all time favs is Ride the cd he did with Rob lamothe

suhl, Tab Benoit and Jimmy Thackery have a joint project called "Whiskey Store live" that is excellant. They will both be on the Blues Cruise in January. You might want to check out Tommy Castro also....Cathy

I didn't see them on iTunes either so I ordered "Roll Away" through the local record store.  I think it's available on Amazon, too.  Pretty cool debut cd.

hello all.  since writing this i have purchased the following cds.

jimmy thackery and the drivers-solid ice
eric gales-the psychadelic underground
popa chubby-the good the bad and the chubby
craig erickson-big highway
lance lopez-higher ground

all in all the lance lopez is probably my favorite album.  i just love how heavy the guy is to the best of my knowledge, the heaviest blues type player there is, but make no mistake i dont think heavy automatically means good.  the man also has chops for days.

however, best song on any of the cds is without a doubt, in the sky by craig erickson.  it is the cosmic blues tune.  i just get lost in it.  if you have ever seen those pictures of the night sky, so full of stars out in the desert hundreds of miles away from any ambient light, it is like if that sight was music.  it has become one of my all time favorite songs.

all the cds are good., i havent given the eric gales one a proper listening several times over like the rest but i will.  thackery has some top notch instrumentals.  id love love love to see all these guys live.  as for popa chubby i love the cd.  this guy is so unique and i have to say one of the best lyricists in blues.  sure some of the lyrics are crude, but to me that means nothing, and the fact is most blues artists are pretty limited lyrically and i think his are really teriffic.  also he is a great guitarist with a style all his own, but people reading this probably already knew that.


and thank you all for the album suggestions.  i welcome them all, unless people are saying, they are all great, buy them all.  of that i have no doubts if people say it, but the problem is i like a starting point and also, it takes me a long time to properly listen to cds if i buy a lot of them at once.  have a good one.
