Topic: Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier 100W vs. Marshall JVM or JMC model??

Hello,
We are wanting to buy a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier 100W 2nd hand from a contact, but we also like the new JVM410H JS model & the JCM 2000 DSL 100W models.

Question, has anyone compared or has had either one? playing obviously hard with Les Paul guitars smile any traps to watch for with these models????

And obviously it comes down to what sound your wanting to reproduce, understand that very well. Just wanted some personal opinions & expert experience's

thanks guys, appreciate your feedback

You probably couldn't go wrong with either. Normally I see Mesas used in metal bands. I want to say they have more gain than most other amps, but I could be wrong. I've never played through one. Marshall DSL are a pretty nice amp for that classic Marshall tone.

I have several buddies with Mesa's and they can get some pretty cool sounds with them - HOWEVER, I am a die hard Marshall fan, and wouldnt play through anything else - but thats just me - The DSL amps are great!! I also have a TSL 60 combo that is an amazing sounding unit - My main amp is a jcm900 mkiii - which is mindblowing - hopefully you can find some place to try them out side by side and see what ya like the best! Good luck with it - Amp shopping is a blast!!!

Re: Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier 100W vs. Marshall JVM or JMC model??

i have extensive experience with all of the amps you mentioned in addition to a mark v from mesa.

the jcm 2000 model will be the cheaper of the bunch and sounds great for the classic marshall tone.

the jvm 410h is a head I own....i dont actually own the new JS model but based on what i know from my head and my knowledge of the changes to the JS model it will be more expensive and alot more versatile.  the built in noisegate on the JS 410 is a super nice feature......and until you actually play a JVM model it's hard to comprehend the MASSIVE amount of gain these amps have on hand......no pedals necessary to juice that bad boy up.

the dual rectifier is a bone crusher and does the hard rock and metal thing very well.  as much as I like it i prefer the mark v head over it because it is more versatile and even though lots of "metal" players use the mark v i think it's a fabulous amp for getting just basic hard rock, rock and country tones.  the wattage switches are nice on the mark v as well.

overall, if money is an issue then the DSL may be your choice......if you are looking for the most gain with versatility then the JVM.........because it not only has the channel choices but it can be channel changed via midi.

I am a huge Mesa guy and i love all of their stuff.....it just sounds different than Marshall.....apples and oranges to my ears.....if you like the way a Mesa sounds better than a Marshall then that's the right choice for you.....and if you do you cant go wrong with the dual rectifier but i would give the mark v a serious look.

As always it comes down to what tones you're trying to get. The Dual Rectifier will give you completely different tones than the 2 Marshalls will. I had a Single Rectifier for about 3 years and tried my best to get the tone I wanted out of it. In the end I sold it for a Marshall JCM800.

Guitars: 2002 Gibson R8, 2008 Gibson SG Standard, 1977 Fender Statocaster, 1979 el Degas Les Paul Custom, 2011 Epiphone JB Les Paul
Amps: 1982 Marshall 4010

I also have the JVM.  I got caught up in the crunch and gain channels.  One day I 'discovered" the clean channel, and it really is quite impressive.  Very versatile amp

yeh the "clean" channel can truly be clean but you can dial it in to be a true beast as well!

Never really warmed to the JVM Series, the gain channels sound like a tin full of mosquitos to me..... Like every other multi-channel Marshall I've ever played (except the Jubilee and the Haze) I've found the best sound is to dime the clean channel.

Re: Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier 100W vs. Marshall JVM or JMC model??

Thank you so much guys for all your valued advice. I guess we just need to make sure that we can still get a nice traditional tone out of the Gibsons if we do go for the Mesa. Personally, I like the JVM 410h JS model , but its mainly for a lot of "covers" med/hard rock stuff that gets played.... choices choices smile thanks ! appreciated smile
