It's funny you used the term "High 5", because I originally wrote this as 95% and then thought that maybe it was closer to 10%. Perhaps that was right and the guys I have respect for should be referred to as...."the High Five" (%).

Best story in baseball this year is the Oakland A's. Any win in the post season, a post season their not even supposed to be in, by this rag tag bunch of misfits and rookies is a plus.

My first MLB game ever back in the early 70's watching a young Vida Blue on the mound.

LET'S - GO - OAKLAND (Boom....Boom...Boom,Boom,Boom)

He also made a referance to the crowd rockin' like it was a Day On The Green.

For a while there I thought they were both going to lose 3-1... with the 1 coming from a homer.

A's playing now bottom of 1st. Can never figur out why TV and radio are sync'd.

I guess most people feel this about their teams, but I really have to disagree here - there is no bigger or better 'story' this year than the miraculous performance of the no-hope, perennial last place Nats in bringing post-season play to the D.C. area for the first time since 1933 - and doing it in style! - led the division virtually the entire season and finished with the best stats in baseball. All credit to the A's for their great catch-up race, but best story? Give me a break, only if you're from California.

I was thrilled to see both wild card games go the way I wanted because I decided that I'd rather see us play the Cards than the Braves, and because the O's are my hope/pick for the AL title.

I hope to see Detroit lose, because they're dangerous - and of course, congrats to Cabrera for his rare feat - and I'd like to see the Gigantes go through so that Jdawg and I can have some fun next week. tongue

Network planners have really ****ed me up tonight, I need an extra tivo/dvr. The Redskins kick off at 7 pm, Barca-Real Madrid starts at 8, while the Nats start at 9. The plan is to watch the Skins till the Nats start, record the Barca game, then switch to recording the end of the Skins game (if there's any interest left) while watching the Nats on the pc.

It's hard work, but someone has to do it. wink

I'm looking forward to finding out if it's really true what they say about post season compared to regular season -

No other sport is an exact analogy, but trust me, people in towns with baseball traditions understand: October baseball bears no resemblance to the “pastoral” sport of April through September. The playoffs are more like the Myocardial Infarction Games.

And two reasons why Nats fans should be hopeful and optimistic -

This season, six of the remaining eight teams won 93 to 98 games — all very good, but little to choose among them. I’ve found only one stunning outlier factor. With their lineup finally healthy, the Nats hit 104 home runs after the all-star break compared to 63, 76 and 52for the Cardinals, Reds and Giants. That’s a huge gap. Against the best pitchers, the one-swing offense is the best solution in the playoffs.

Perhaps more important, the Nats have the right pitcher set to start Games 1 and, if necessary, 5. Gio Gonzalez has pitched only one complete-game shutout in his career. It was against the Cardinals five weeks ago (the only time he’s ever faced them). Gonzalez has the lowest batting-average-against of anyone in MLB and swing-and-miss stuff is golden in playoffs.

Your points are exactally why the A's are better if not bigger story......even if your NOT from California.

The A's never led the division......until the last day of the season coming from 13 back at the beginning of July AND 5 back with 9 to go. NO TEAM, IN MLB HISTORY HAS EVER COME FROM 5 BACK WITH 9 TO GO TO WIN THEIR DIVISION

The A's were picked by most baseball experts to lose 90 not win 94 and come in last place.

Their line up is full of rookies .....especially starting and relief pitchers.

Maybe I should have said "surprise" story but I'll just stick with best.

But hey, we are all due our opinion.....even from Amsterdamn.

Great season for the Nats.  I remember seeing Frank Howard and the hapless Senators.  DC is my hometown.  That said, I wouldn't overlook the Cardinals.  Defending champs and a ton more experience.  Don't get cocky George.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

G Dawg, perhaps you didn't hear the story about A's pitcher Pat Neshek who left the team before the division clincher to be with his wife for the birth of their first child. Well sadly their first born died 23 hours after he was born and Pat was with the team yesterday and made a relief appearance. The A's are wearing a patch with the infants initials in support of Pat & his wife. If you think you Nats are more important than what is happening with the A's then so be it. Gotta run, headed to Truckee to work for 3 days..........Let's Go Oakland!!!! God works in mysterious ways.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

well, it took a weekend of football to get over the Braves loss. and yes that was a terrible showing by the Braves fans, I was embarrassed more because they didn't understand the full extent of the rule. It was already emotional with a packed house and many of them lost their cool, unacceptable. The Braves didn't deserve to win, even if they call that a single we don't know how it would have played out. You cannot throw the ball away time after time and give up unearned runs and expect to beat a good team. Congrats to the Cards, but I'll be pulling for the Nats all the way. I just really hated to see Chipper have to go out like that.

As corn through a goose, so are the days of our lives

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

that is a very sad and tragic loss for them, I hate to see it happened. It does make everything else going on pale in comparison.

Ahh yes...Big Frank, 6 foot 7 275lbs ....I once saw him hit a home run on the "game of the week" (remember those Sat. games with Joe G. and Tony Kubek) in Detroit.... Frank gets jambed near his knuckles, breaks his bat and the ball goes 5 rows deep...yep I know he played for the Wash. Senators George wink and started his career with the Dodgers.....his baseball card made him look even bigger, massive forearms!

Interestingly Shred, I recall that baseball card too! Wore big glasses too.  And Saturday post cartoons game with Joe Garagiola, a guy who, unlike Joe Buck, could make ANY game hold your atttention...

I remember seeing Frank Howard play in a game in Baltimore (as Bryan Adams says), back in the summer of '69 (he was definitely still one of the leading HR hitters), I think playing first not the OF (2 big first base players in one game seems how I recall, Frank & Boog Powell).  Wonder if my old man still has the program which we kept score with.  I think, pretty sure I recall Howard blasting one off a house 2 streets across outside the stadium...

I don't think that was the game we stuck around to meet Orioles players in the parking lot (it might have been the A's later).  One of my sisters cheated and had an equipment manager take her popcorn megaphone to the locker room as he had told her it was the only way she would get Frank Robinson's autograph (only one she cared about).  She got it, but missed out most of the players graciously signing in the parking lot.  I got Brooks Robinson, Paul Blair, Jim Palmer, Boog Powell, Dave McNally and another one I can't recall, whether it was Mark Belanger or Don Buford...

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

I'm afraid that I can't join in with the old guy's reminiscences here as I was never a fan back then and most of my youth was spent elsewhere.

All I know for sure is that the Senators were always crap, and that since I started paying a bit of serious attention to the sport in recent years, this, right now, is my first ever post-season experience. Every other WS series game I have ever seen has been between teams I don't care about. This is the first time that I have a personal stake.

As a long time fan of two historically under-performing teams, West Ham and the Redskins, I can't tell you how excited I am to see the Nats have a chance at achieving something special over the next couple of weeks. Even if they fail, merely getting there was already a buzz! cool

I didn't mean to bad mouth anyone else's team, I was only pointing out the uniqueness of the Nat's achievement, irrespective of what kind of personal dramas might be going on in other teams. Every one of you posting in this topic has experienced post-season glory - and heartbreak - except me, this is all a first for me! So, in view of last night's first win in St. Louis and the other results, it looks like I'm the only one here right now with any bragging rights at all. tongue

Again, I hope that all those who are uncommitted, or whose teams are already out, will support the Nats - or the O's in the AL - as long as those gd Yankees don't wind up winning. wink
