Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

I realize it's playoff time and everybody's excited about their teams, but not a single word here about Miguel Cabrera winning the triple crown? That is an amazing feat considering it was last accomplished 45 years ago. People seem to really excited when someone pitches a perfect game, but there were 3 of those this season.
This triple crown is baseball history and seems to have been met with a yawn from baseball fans everywhere. My congrats go out to Cabrera for an amazing season.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

you are right Bill, an amazing feat even though the batting average is not as high as in previous years, that's what saved him. I can't believe that there is talk about Mike Trout winning the MVP, no triple crown or part thereof and no playoff appearance for his team.

Oh, Angela and Rhonda, there will be no squirrel today as we are at Turner Stadium. Unless they bring one with them. lol

I wouldn't be surprised if Cabrera tested positive for an illegal substance, he's much bulkier than he was in his Marlin days, not to mention his DUI arrest in spring training. I recall when he got pulled over he had an open bottle of rum and told the officer, "Don't you know who I am?" I don't feel anything endearing about this guy, just my opinion.

Wtf???  Did that umpire distract the shortstop?  Looked more than miscommunication....

Ballsy call for sure.

Fans don't stop throwing crap on the field I'd call the game.  Where's the freaking public address system?  Not good for either team and certainly not safe.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

For two good defensive teams the Cardinal's win was rather ugly.  I think the controversial call in the eighth inning was unfortunate for the Braves and their fans, but that rule is in effect for the offensive team.  The reaction by their fans was one of the poorest displays of sportsmanship I've seen.  I don't really like this playoff format as the Braves clearly outplayed the Cards this season and now one game has ended their season.
I was listening to the game driving through non-stop hard rain from Indianapolis.  My wife was in the hospital for eleven days.  Last saturday her kidneys failed from contrast used in a CTscan and her creatine level was five times normal three days later.  She gained 10 lbs in two days before her kidneys started working again and the high levels spun off other problems before the doctors got things under control.  We're just worn out, but we're both St. Louis fans and the win lifted our spirits.
Doubt the Birds could beat the Nats, but experience and lack of it may come into play.  I really fear the Reds as they have just dominated the second half of the season.

Regarding the Cabrera triple crown, yep it's an awesome accomplishment and since the Tigers are my hometown team I am pretty excited.  But this thread is dominated by you west coast NL fans, so I figured no one would care.  wink

This thread is for all bb fans. You got a team you like? Jump on in. We west coasters do like our teams, but there are fans from quite a few non west teams here as well. Cabrera's achievement is astounding. Congrats!

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

About the call in Atlanta tonight. The infield fly rule comes down to a judgement decision by the umpire based on his determining if the ball was a routine pop fly, which apparently he felt it was even though it was nowhere near the infield. Was it a good call? Not in my opinion, but umpires are only human. The only play reviewable in baseball is a home run call, maybe that will change after tonight. I feel bad for the Braves and their fans and Dan Uggla's sister Jane who was sittin' next to me with her husband and stressing on every pitch through the late innings. Just unbelievable that a game of this magnitude has to involve an extremely controversial call.

A triple crown in baseball is a rare feat, but in this steroid age one can become skeptical.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Regarding the call I think after thinking about it and viewing the replay you see the umpires arm going up as the shortstop moves away from an easily caught fly ball.  That's why the rule exists to begin with, but I wonder if the same call would be made without the extra umpires and not ruled an error.  With bases loaded and one out this call may or may not have changed the outcome, but it certainly didn't help the home team in a highstakes game.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Tres, I feel real bad for you. Recovering from last season and what your team accomplished this year, what a way to end the season and what a way for Chipper Jones to go out!! I can't stand it when there is a controversial call, possibly game changing, in an important game like that. I thought it was as bad a call as the Seahawks game.

With that said, I'm glad the bad fan behavior happened in Atlanta and not in Philly. wink Philly has a stigma that will never be forgotten or forgiven, it just continues to feed on past history without new incidences.

Sorry Angela, you know I love you but I'll refer you back to the 3rd game of the Sixers/Bulls series this spring. Derek Rose is already done for a year and Joaquin Noah goes down with a severe ankle sprain and is writhing on the floor in pain. What do Philly fans do? Cheer of course!
When Noah got up and hobbled off the court, they actually booed.
So much for no recent incidents. I don't think I've ever seen or heard of any other fans cheering for an opponent's injury. I hate to make a sweeping statement because I'm sure there are many Philly fans that abhor that type of behavior (obviously you're one of them), but Philadelphia has the worst fans in the country.
