Re: The Football Topic

Most of my Hammer friends disagree with me, Mike. I may be doing Carroll an injustice by thinking of him as no more than a big lump and by doubting that he will be able to score in the region of 20 goals. I will be delighted to be proved wrong - maybe I'm just a born pessimist, or maybe it's just a lifetime of 'fortune always hiding'?

The Fulham game has now taken on a whole new dimension with Carroll vs. Berbatov.

Re: The Football Topic

glad (in a way) that is not just me negative about the forthcoming season and my teams chances of success!

Have to say that Big Sam has I think looked at the likes of Stoke and Wigan and realised that to play it safe you have to stop some of the bigger teams playing heir game and resort to long ball (wigan were lucky to get away with it). The problem being the tiered system within the premiership where nobody can compete with the likes of Man City, Chelsea and Man U.

Bebatov back at Spurs? Not bothered myself, - when he was there I thought he was great but he got what he deserved becoming a bench warmer at Old Trafford. he does not work hard enough to demand a starting place, never has, never will, competes with the best in the world in terms of balance and ball control though.

Tottenham would actually be the better move, although whether the fans would want him again is another matter (see further comments on certain Spurs fans below)

I've been texting with a mate who is a Spurs fan today George, about Carroll. He thinks the same as you. Saying how typical of BFS to want this type of player and how OUR (WH) fans won't like it.

It always amazes me with these type of Spurs fans (not all are like it and certainly not Ian916!). Quick to diss any other clubs players, style of play, fans or ambitions, when in reality they would sell their own children just to finish above Arsenal. The hypocrisy is unbelievable.

On that basis Berbatov would be an ideal fit!

I'm no fan of the scouse clubs but I would be happy to see both of them having a good season this year and push Tottenham down into 7th.

Annoyed Hammer!

Re: The Football Topic

after my run in with Spurs fan mate this over the Carroll loan deal I was obviously delighted the way things turned out on Saturday with the results of both clubs.

Shame Carroll got crocked but he has a bit of recovery time. I don't think he is a one trick pony and he needs to do well this year to re-establish his rep and that could be good for the Hammers.

It might not be everyones cup of tea but I think dead ball opportunities are going to be more important than ever this year as so many clubs will flood the midfield when playing away. From this aspect Carroll will cause problems and I certainly don't feel it is a 'betrayal' of West Ham's footballing pretensions that we have this kind of problem.

As for Tottenham. I couldn't be more pleased for Chris Hughton!

It's the West Ham way, Mike. New signing makes immediate, fantastic impact, gets crocked. No word yet on how serious this hamstring is, let's hope he's not out for months. We had so many more options with our big lump putting himself about, good analysis by Shearer on MotD. Yes, I am now happy to concede that he is more than just a big lump, and I'm happy to support any style of play that will guarantee the security of mid-table obscurity this first season back. wink

Six weeks - at least. Just so typical.... sad

More from the world of 'football goes completely insane' -

Hulk moves from Sporting to Zenith St. Petersburg for 50m euros

Witsel moves from Benfica to Zenith for 40m euros (bought last year for 8m!)

Del Piero has the good sense to turn down the chance to play at Anfield and goes to Australia on a free instead, where he will become the biggest earner in Oz footie.

Proper footie will resume in 10 days after the qualifiers that really nobody is interested in, are finally over.

Ah, I'm too worried George. Shame they have to carry his wage bill of course, but he was a bit of icing anyway. They never expected to get him so they have cover. The naysayers should be pleased. We'll have to play 'the West Ham way' again now! smile

He's a young fella. I reckon he'll be back sooner, as long as he doesn't skoot off back to the NEast and get himself into bother.

So Zenit are now the Citeh of the East are they? 50mill for the Hulk. Hope they built in some money for extra shirts, or do they play in green already?

Don't know much about the other guy, but if I haven't heard of him in the last year and yet his value has gone from 8 to 40mill then you know he's an overpriced dud.

Sorry, but there needs to be a war on agents, stringent financial regs for all clubs playing in EUFA competitions and a rule against more than 5 non-nationals in the team. What chance the FA being the first to draw a line in the sand? No chance. I think the Germans would do it, the fans can already see the sense of it, but all the clubs have to try and compete with Bayern and now Dortmund and foreign players are the only way, ultimately to the detriment of their own youth.

Not surprising that Ronaldo is unhappy, small fish in the big pond always wants all of the attention yet if he moved into a smaller pond he would still be moaning. His mummy should have slapped his leg when he was little and cried to get his own way. I would be surprised if he came back to the Premiership, - he would possibly get even more of what he hated before, - kicks.

ps, I should not be talking about premiership football this year by the look of it, - sulky Spurs fan here. So I will talk about the kids team: Our first game of the season this Saturday, - we got relegated on a 1 goal difference at the end of las season despite
the team above us staying up as a result of having conceded games to the two top teams so as to avoid big defeats...kids football fair? No, it is run by ignorant old men trying to stamp their authority!! - We won 11-1...... Great? Not really, not entirely convinced that the kids will learn a lot this year,, - it will suit some of the weaker players but I may loose some of my stronger ones as a result of boredom.

Easy! You are a hammer fan! I already wrote on my introduction topic
I am a Chelsea fan. A long time fan.
Amsterhammer,
I have been following Chelsea since I was little girl as my father was a chelsea fan (he lived in London before. Mother and sister, are on the other hand, support Man United. I feel indifferent with hammer - I don't dislike and I don't like.  I've always disliked Arsenal, Tottenham, QPR, Leeds and Liverpool.
I don't think new Chelsea fans like to claim themselves as long time fans as some of them don't even know who Denis Wise is - they only know Frank Lampard (true story). I sort of have little skirmish with "Jose" fans all the time. Not that I feel superior but they are annoying. You know when annoying chelsea fan finds other chelsea fans annoying = disaster. Good thing is some of them become Man City fans now. LOL
I will be good on this forum too. I barely get into trouble exchanging banters with fans of other teams. Only did 4-5 times with Liverpool, Colcester and Tottenham  fans.

Anyway great to see people follow football here! Looking forward to read comments and some banters!
Ryn

Re: The Football Topic

Fair enough Ryn, perfectly good reasons for following a club. I also infected my oldest with the curse of West Ham at an early age, though my younger son has been a great disappointment. After 'supporting' every club that won the title in the early years of the Prem (when he was also very young), he eventually settled on ManU, despite being a Londoner. sad

Not a dig at you, but I haven't yet posted my pleasure at Terry getting at least part of what he deserves. He is a player I have always detested.

On a brighter note, Mike, our Hammers actually played some real, proper footie last night, it was a bit of a time warp - none of the seven of us at an Irish bar in town could say for sure when we last saw a team play so well. Our midfield totally bossed the game, both Noble and Nolan were great, but Diame, our poor man's Viera, was possibly even better. The Arse game should be a cracker on Saturday!

Re: The Football Topic

Yes, the reports sounded positive even though the number of bookings distorted the readers view of the game.

As soon as I saw the fixtures for the season I felt these were all must win/not lose games. We've not played ANYBODY yet really. Unlike Soton, but yes Arsenal will be the test.

Still, its good to have the points we've got to date. This won't be an easy season. I hope the fans lay off of Allardyce for the duration of the term. You do need someone with the nous to get you through this first year. Mark Hughes will get QPR functioning and they won't stay down there I feel. My mate here, a Spurs fan, has bet me that WH will be London's bottom club. To be honest I won't mind that if we can still finish 15th or above!

I still feel our strike force is not up to it. I excuse Carroll from that on the basis we haven't seen enough of him yet and he has something to prove. The rumour mill is already turning. The same mate told me that Newcastle are rumoured to be offering Liverpool Demba Ba if they can have Carroll back in January plus dosh etc. Ironic really. They will have both have played for the Hammers but we didn't get to keep either!

Funny old game.....

PS quite funny to read that modern Chelsea fans only really remember the Abramovich 'spend' era players. Sad for the old 'uns like Ron Harris, Eddie Macreadie, Johhny Hollins, Hutchinson, Osgood, Bonetti, Cooke, Webb. Still, I guess if they can erase someone like Ken Bates from their memory that has GOT to be good!

Re: The Football Topic

Terry, I am not going to protect him. I love him as a player but as a man, he is a _______ (fill the word you want) just like Ashley Cole. As long as he is good on the pitch, I really don't mind whatever they do off the pitch. In all honesty, Terry deserved it. I don't know if he meant that but he admitted that he said it. Accept the ban and then get over it.

Yes, some of the modern Chelsea fans really do stick with Mourinho. I bumped into Ken Bates once in Fulham Boardway Centre in 2003. My father was sort of "Team Harding" so he didn't talk much about Bates. I genuinely think that both modern Chelsea and old Chelsea fans cannot erase Ken Bates out of our memories as he constantly talks about Chelsea. Really grateful for what he did for Chelsea in 90s, brought in great players etc. (I can't remember much in early 90s because I am 26 years old).

names from my youth there!

my mum worked with Hollins sister so got me a signed team poster when I was a kid, and Peter Osgood's nephew played in our Club (kids) up until 2 years ago!

Funny how the kids follow the perceived winners of the time as opposed to the team local to them or their parents choice. You are starting to get Man City kits being worn by kids which is just odd down here in the South East. Also funny to see the kids who do follow their fathers team, I gave free choice to my son and he ended up a Chelsea fan...ummmm. Often wonder what it says about me as a dad that I let him decide what team he supports yet when it comes to music his taste his my taste...I guess I care more passionately about music than I do football perhaps?

As for Terry...... best not go there, oh maybe I will. His defence in court was brilliant as it was the ONLY defence that he could have used that could have got him off. The sad thing is that he is an example to kids and already in a school I know well the exact same defence was used by a kid on a racial abuse incident...Nothing that the school could do, and that is why Terry is the lowest of the low as a person, - he has no comprehension of social responsibility that his position brings or if he does he has no respect for others. - Excellent footballer that when you see him play in front of your eyes as opposed to TV really does deserve a lot of credit, saw him in a CL game couple season ago, - brilliant centre back, his positional play was superb. Saw Ledley King the following night again CL game, equally has good positionally but with greater strength, - what a pair those 2 would have made for England...

COYS....We have not a Chavski fan put their head above the parapet in here! smile
