I think this is probably the wildcard but I would say "A Different Kind of Truth - Van Halen".

They just came back with a vengeance and put out a massive rock album. They proved they weren't over the hill and could still do it, with some kick **** songs that were modern and not the same old 80's stuff.

+1

I actually pulled this one out again.......it's pretty darn good....sounds as good as they did before...too bad the tour did not last and Dave's Voice

And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually.........

1) Blackberry Smoke - The Whippoorwill
Just perfect. Great songs, great playing, no fillers. Perfect. And I love the cover art.

2) Joe Bonamassa - Driving Towards the Daylight
Some outstanding tracks but there's one or two that are average (in terms of songwriting). Needless to say the guitars are phenomenal, as always.

3) Pistol Annies - Hell on heels
I do have a thing for southern belles singing in harmony.

I started this thread cause the replies are always interesting, especially the new bands.  I didn't know Blackberry Smoke had a new album and after listening to it I love it.  Was listening to Skynyrd this past weekend and The Whippoorwill is the epitome of Southern Rock.  Effing awesome with a capital F, my new number one.  Thanks Bluesbreaker!

Re: 2012 Album of the year so far.

I've enjoyed many albums this year..including the live BCC one, Joe's DTTD and a nice surprising return from Van Halen...
I'm looking forward to the new BCC album, plus the Soundgarden release...but already...and by a mile...I know the greatest album this year and for a long while will be the Zeppelin Celebration Day release in November.

In no particular order...

Joe Bonamassa "Driving Towards the Daylight"

Oli Brown "Here I Am"

Albert Cummings "No Regrets"

Walter Trout "Blues For The Modern Daze"

That should be about it for me. cool

Warren Haynes Band - Live at the Moody Theater.

I've been meaning to pick that up for a while.

Re: 2012 Album of the year so far.

Anathema - Weather Systems.  This album has made me cry. Atmospheric prog at its best. If any album gets close to this, I'll be surprised.

Re: 2012 Album of the year so far.

'The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind' - Ben Folds Five... In my mind, one of the most under-rated groups on the planet... Sure, not a definitely winner, but a nominee? Yes! Their first album since 1999 I believe? And I've just listened to it through - Just awesome... At times, chaotic, at times, elegant beyond belief... Piano/Bass/Drums driven rock, with Jazz influences, and it's incredible smile
Check them out if you haven't already heard of them... In my book, they're up there with my favourites smile

Re: 2012 Album of the year so far.

I agree with some already posted - Joe, Walter, Oli, Nimmo Bros but I have got to add the new album "House in the Woods" by Henrik Freischlader Band. Bought it in Munich on Monday and cant stop playing it - perfectly captures his live experience but its 10 studio tracks.

Re: 2012 Album of the year so far.

Wait, was Volbeat this year? So it was. That too.

Surprisingly I don't like the new album at all.   I've felt they started off fantastic and have been gradually producing lesser albums ever since.
