Topic: My tone...(live)

Apologies if this is posted in the wrong part of the forum but this is my band and the recording is straight through a digital SLR mic - no gimmicks, just straight up. (The guitar sounds way loud cos the camera guy is stood virtually in front of 2 kicking 4x12's - but I like it like that, heh heh!)

BTW it's an Epiphone Firebird 7 with Irongear Rolling Mill II pickups (parallel wired)

Hope you enjoy

Cheers

Hi
I love the tune sounds great. I would love to hear it in a good mix other than a mono camera. Rock on brother

That Firebird sounded killer, and I agree with Ron you should get that song recorded and post it on here mono camera just doesn't do it justice

Hi
I listened to all the samples. Very good sounds like Phil Collins, are you guys influenced by Genesis? What would you category would you place your music? What audience are you shooting for?
Rock on
Cheers Ron

Re: My tone...(live)

Influences....(cue maniacal cackling to infinity)

Sorry, the Phil Collins reference does it every time ;-). It's the tone of Steve's voice that brings that reference - and he hates it!!! More ammo for me then!
Never liked or been influenced by Genesis but you're not the first to say that (weird, huh? Marillion is another one I get) Anyhow, I generally develop and arrange the music side of things so the influence pretty much comes from 70/80's US hard rock/AOR (let's just forget the 90's) and a major drift towards Joe B in the 00's with a smidge of Americana. As I get older I realise there might even be a nod to Johnny Marr in there on the picking side of things.
As for categories, that's for the listener to decide and that's who we're aiming at, anyone who wants to listen and likes us. Essentially, we're just guys that love to play and write and you never lose that.

Rig..
Well spotted Softmc.....tis indeed a Line6 Vetta II HD. I'll explain all in a later post - stay with me on this one for full equipment details ;-).

Re: My tone...(live)

Ok, here's the rig and a bit of an explanation (sorry for being long winded)

So, here ‘tis.

The live guitars are:

Epiphone Firebird VII (Classic White) with Irongear Rolling Mill 2 pickups (each pickup switched for Parallel/Split/Series – generally kept in parallel mode)

Epiphone SG400 (Pelham Blue) with Irongear Alchemist 90’s

Epiphone G-1275 Double Neck with Irongear Rolling Mill pickups (each pickup switched for Parallel/Split/Series – 6 string generally kept in series mode, 12 string kept in split mode)

Then into…

MXR ZW-44 into Snarling Dogs Whine O Wah into Line 6 Vetta II HD into 2 4x12’s.

And that’s it…..

The outboard pedals are just there for a bit of fun and they take just a little harshness out of the signal before it hits the Vetta

The 4x12’s are wired like Bogners… each cab has 2 x Celestion Vintage 30’s and 2 x Celestion GT-75’s wired in stereo and in an “X” formation.

To be honest I’ve had the Vetta since the HD II first came out and if someone turned around said I could have a similar valve rig that didn’t require maintenance I’d snap their hand off, but that’s not going to happen (I don’t think). Soooo, with a bit of perseverance and copying Joe B’s approach I’ve pretty much got the tone I want

Essentially it’s 2 amps one panned hard left and one panned hard right – I think that’s essential so each cab handles it’s own set of specific frequencies and resonances. I took Joe’s approach of finding a key amp model and then adding a second amp to get the right sound. For gain it’s a Marshall Jubilee model and a Cornford MKII model, for light crunch it’s a jumped Plexi model and the Cornford. Then for cleaner stuff you have to change the models to a combination of a Boogie MkIIC and a Matchless Chieftain model and for 12 string squeeky clean stuff it’s the JC120 and clean JCM 900 models.

The trick with the Vetta is the K.I.S.S. approach so I only use those amps, and models of an overdrive, phaser, flanger, chorus delay and a smidge of plate reverb – I treat it like a normal rig to do what I want and don’t try to use stuff for the hell of it.

Unfortunately, the good stuff stays at home as I want to keep it and I don’t want somebody walking off from a gig with my pride and joy, so they are

1973 Gibson Les Paul Custom with “T-Tops” (Black)
2002 Les Paul Standard (Lightburst) Stock, 60’s neck
1984 Ibanez DT-555 Destroyer (The “Phil Collen” model)
1995 Fender Richie Sambora Strat – Mexican, custom wired
2010 Epiphone EJ200C
Line 6 Variax 700 (Blue)

There are other guitars from my youth that I’ve held onto but these are the ones close to my heart.

There’s a shed load of other outboard stuff and rack stuff that I use when recording but those are the “toys” – the workhorse stuff is described above.

Cheers

Re: My tone...(live)

Living proof folks tone is in the hands.  Everybody always says you gotta have a tube amp but here it is no tubes in sight and I have to say for a camera recording its a great sound that wraps around the song.  Well done bro!  Well done!

Thanks for the comments (blushing profusely here).

I didn't say, but there is a little trick I discovered with a one of the fx models in the amp. I believe one of the main characteristics of a valve amp is the very slight "bloom" you get when you hit the front end hard - apply that thought to setting up the right compressor model to front end the amp models and you gain entry to the ballpark

We all have "tone"......the trick is getting everybody else to hear what we hear.
