Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Dang, I had to stay up till around 4am for that bottom of the ninth anti-climax. sad

But, an entirely deserved win for your guys, despite Harper's 19th homer. Medlen was awesome (as I feared) and Kimbrel was even more than awesome! Wow, that guy had some seriously wicked stuff and was literally unhittable!

RIP Iron Man

You west coast fans have this thread mostly tied up. But I did want to say that it's nice to see the Tigers can actually manufacture runs for a change rather than relying on the homerun exclusively like they have nearly all season.

Well done Giants. Posey should be a certain MVP candidate!

I thought I'd write a little synopsis of our revered Padre Broadcaster and living legend, Gerald (Jerry) Francis Coleman Jr.

Jerry was newly broadcasting games when I returned from serving in the Viet Nam war. He is the announcer I listened to on the AM radio broadcasts over the years, and then on TV. He is like an Uncle who taught me all the fine points of the game and to love it win or lose.

A statue was unveiled at Petco Park that's installed in the Park at the Park among statues of former Padre Greats. The statue depicts him as a young man in his WW2 Marine combat pilot uniform. He wanted it that way.
Jerry's history covered 70 years and three careers:

1 year of minor league ball before turning 18 and enlisting in the Marines as a combat pilot in WW2 flying Curtis dive bombers. 60 combat missions and a DFC.
After his service, he went back into the Yankee organization and played 2nd base on the great championship teams of the early 50's.He pooh pooh's his contributions during those years since those teams contained many of baseball's immortals. Others would say he was a real contributor to those teams' success.
The Korean war started up and he enlisted again, leaving pro ball, to fly Corsairs over South and North Korea providing close air support for combat Marines on the ground. 60 more missions and another DFC. He retired from the USMC as a Lt. Colonel.
He was inducted into the USMC Sports Hall of Fame. The award was presented to him by Fleet Admiral "Bull" Halsey.
He then retired from baseball and got a job in San Diego as an announcer for the Padres.
He broadcast games, worked as a team executive, as an interim manager, then returned to broadcasting until this day.
He won the Floyd C. Frick announcer's award and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
A 70 year career in total. He celebrated his 88th birthday on Thursday.

Ohhh Doctor!
You can hang a star on that baby!

A great man who's career will never be equaled in baseball. A man's man and a player's player.
Thanks for the  memories Jerry.
For those here who served as Marines, this former sailor salutes you and says Semper Fi in honor of his service.

Rick that was one very lovely piece, I would hope you would send that to the U-T San Diego....long time announcers are part of each and every sports fans "family".....to often I've heard it said, "I wish I had sent a letter (email these days) to such and such organization", as was the case with long time Raider and Warrior announcer Bill King, who happened to live in my neighborhood as youngster

Thanks Shreddy, I will. Plus, I forgot one more little highlight of his career.  1950 World Series MVP! In all the years I've listened to him it was never mentioned. He also was Rookie of the year in 1950, a multiple All Star, and a big part of winning 4 out of 7 World Series during the incredible dynasty of the Yankees in the early 1950's. He discounts those feats, crediting the other players around him. He says the highpoint of his life was pinning on his aviator's wings in the Marines as a young 2nd Lt. in WW2.
He was one of the best defensive 2nd basemen of his time, but calls himself a "punch and judy" hitter playing amongst the likes of Mize, Berra, Rizutto, Martin, Bauer and DiMaggio.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Congrats on the sweep, Tres. My Nats have been a shadow of themselves this series, apart from Harper's 19th homer. Even Gio was totally off his game going for his 20th. Day off today, I hope they can compose themselves to deal with the Dodgers at home and restore some confidence.

What a great sporting weekend for Sandy Eggo fans, eh Rick, Rocket? big_smile

earlier in the year I would have bragged on them, but then we just got swept at the Brewers. We still won't catch you guys, so it's only a confidence booster going to the final games. I didn't watch any last night, but understand Mike Minor looked pretty good.

Rocket's not a local fan, holding allegiances to out of town teams, but I am smiling pretty nicely GDawg. The Padres continue to play very good ball and have a shot at taking 3rd in the division... or even better smile. We'll be having a string of games against the NLW leaders down the stretch with a chance to mess up some teams' lofty but tenuous standings if they continue to play the way they have lately. Hats off to our management for salvaging a horrendous string of injuries and turning a team that looked headed for a hundred loss season into a real performer since the mid-season break. The team actually feels they have a shot at a wild-card berth if they continue the roll.
The Chargers are looking mighty potent! They crushed the Titans yesterday without their two best weapons on the field.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

I've been quiet with the White Sox of late, but they beat the Tigers today (in a make up game) to open a 3 game lead. 16 games left, but that was a huge game since its the last game head to head with Detroit. Go Sox!

In other news, the Cubs scored 12 runs in their last 4 innings to beat the Pirates and need to win 5 of their last 16 to avoid triple digit losses. Go Cubs, lol.

Thanks to G Dawgs 'Nats for beating the Dodger$ in game 1, but not quite enough Natitude to finish 'em off in the nightcap. Giants magic number @ 5 and if they hang onto the 3-0 lead they have in the botm 4 vs. the Rockies it could drop to 4. The Petaluma Little Leaguers are being honored at tonights game. This is about the last hoorah for these kids that had the Bay Area glued to ESPN for weeks.

this has become quite the story now, Kris will attempt to tie a 60 year old record at 22 straight wins next time out. He did it again last night against Josh Johnson and the fish.
