Topic: Favorite Lyrics

Here's one of my favorites, which I hadn't heard for a long time, but it made me think of all the great lyrics that have been written over the years:

You hurt the ones that I love best and cover up the truth with lies,
One day you'll be in the ditch, flies buzzing around your eyes,
Blood on your saddle

This song was written during a period when Dylan and his wife were in the process of splitting up. Although Dylan has denied it was about her, his son has said that this entire LP was them talking to each other. Wow, do you think Bob was a tad upset when he wrote these?

Anybody else have any favorites?

Ian Gillan from the Rapture of The Deep album by Deep Purple 'Be what you are I tell myself and myself tells me we can't be anybody else'

Sheer brilliance from Mr Gillan!!

All the best from Aus,

Re: Favorite Lyrics

Pretty much all of "Thick As A Brick", but the first two lines grabbed me, the first time I heard them as a teen.

"Really don't mind, if you sit this one out.
My word's but a whisper, your deafness a SHOUT!"

Play like you've worked at it, and don't worry about sounding like your influences.  You can't cheat on them, or your practice, anyway.  If you've worked hard at your skill, your audience will know it.

Re: Favorite Lyrics

the Stranglers lyrics over the years have been superb, - early stuff like "Hanging Around" - what an opening: "Big girl in the red dress, she's just trying to impress, and she's got the barley fever, but she does n't make a sound, she's just hanging around".

and then you cannot have a thread about lyrics without mentioning the master; Ian Dury... "oi, oi"..."shoes like dead pigs noses" from "Blockheads" - and just look up "Reasons to be cheerful" to see a genius at work.

Re: Favorite Lyrics

I like my sig line for one song, including the line "paired off pacemakers with matching alarms" which never fails to crack me up. but Apolitical Blues is also funny. "John Wayne or Dorothy Lamour, I said I just don't want to talk to them....now." Lowell had a weird sense of humor.

As corn through a goose, so are the days of our lives

Re: Favorite Lyrics

One of my favorite all-time songs off a Curby top five album.  The lyrics to this song reach down deep into my soul.  I think I want this one played at my funeral.  I feel like shaking my fist when I hear it..."come around, we'll kick your **** in".

nice thread Bill. I actually had been thinking that we need something like this recently. I have soooo many. right now what I can think of since we rbought up Joe Walsh

"If you look at your reflection in the bottom of a well,
What you see is only on the surface.
When you try to see the meaning, hidden underneath,
The measure of the depth can be deceiving.
The bottom has a rocky reputation
You can feel it in the distance the deeper down you stare.
From up above it's hard to see but you knowwhen you're there.
On the bottom words are shallow.
On the surface talk is cheap.
You can only judge the distance by the company you keep"

I also love Miss you Hate You cause i need you.........

"The Confessor"

I think both you and I wanted the other Joe to remake this.  A duo with both Joes would be great.

"Fire and Water, must have made you his daughter,"

"You got what it takes, to make a poor man's heartbreak"

Only Paul can sing this with all the conviction and blues that it is.

Re: Favorite Lyrics

Most of the O'Jays songs.  Love Gamble and Huff

"they smile in your face, all the time trying to take your place, the Backstabbers, Backstabbers."
"so are they their to see my woman," I don't even be home but they just keep on comin"

For the love of money
People will steal from their mother
For the love of money
People will rob their own brother
For the love of money
People can't even walk the street
Because they never know who in the world they're gonna beat
For that lean, mean, mean green
Almighty dollar, money

"love train"
People all over the world (you don't need no money)
Join hands (come on)
Start a love train, love train (don't need no ticket, come on)
People all over the world (Join in, ride this train)

I love music
Nothing can be better than a sweet love song
So sweet
So sweet
So mellow, mellow
When you got the girl that you love in your arm
Oh honey, I love you, I love you, yeah
Music is the healing force of the world
It's understood by every man, woman, boy and girl
And that's why, that's why I say
I love music
Any kind of music
I love music
Just as long as it's groovin', groovin'

Re: Favorite Lyrics

Hard to come up with one favorite.   I am huge Pink Floyd fan.
these lines from Wish You Were Here always resonate with me.

We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
And how we found
The same old fears.

My favorite line from a Joe Bonamassa song is from Driving Towards Daylight

The rusted strings on my old guitar speaks volumes of who your are.  I can just visualize a guitar in a corner gathering dust.

Re: Favorite Lyrics

Speaking of Pink Floyd, this one always makes me stop and think for a while:

Did you ever wonder
Why we had to run for cover
When the promise of a brave new world
Unfurled beneath a clear blue sky

Re: Favorite Lyrics

Again Floyd the only words in the track
"One of these days I'm going to cut you into little pieces"
Now you know why we run for cover as the above states. lol

Come on the Blades (sorry Idolbone just had to borrow your line)

Re: Favorite Lyrics

And then one day you'll find
Ten years had got behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun....
