Topic: 2012 Album of the year so far.

Listening to Albert Cummings new album recently had me thinking who's leading the race for album of the year.  Yep, Albert's album is that good and others that quickly come to mind are Royal Southern Brotherhood, Jimmy Bowskill's Back Number, Alabama Shakes and (from the samples I've heard) Simon McBride's Crossing the Line.  Seems like the direction of these bands is less Blues and more "other" influences like Rock, Jazz, Americana and Country.

Re: 2012 Album of the year so far.

Joe Bonamassa - Driving Towards the Daylight
Anthony Gomes - Up 2 Zero
Walter Trout - Blues for the Modern Daze
Robert Cray - Nothin But Love

Now growing up it ain't anything but all This indecision with these debts and doubts
And worries hanging over my head. When I was a child I spoke as a child,
I wish I could remember what I said.

Re: 2012 Album of the year so far.

1) Blackberry Smoke - The Whippoorwill
Just perfect. Great songs, great playing, no fillers. Perfect. And I love the cover art.

2) Joe Bonamassa - Driving Towards the Daylight
Some outstanding tracks but there's one or two that are average (in terms of songwriting). Needless to say the guitars are phenomenal, as always.

3) Pistol Annies - Hell on heels
I do have a thing for southern belles singing in harmony.

Re: 2012 Album of the year so far.

Our host aside, for me, best albums of 2012, so far:-

Nimmo Brothers - Brother To Brother
Mitch Laddie - Burning Bridges
Oli Brown - Here I Am
Royal Southern Brotherhood

Waiting to hear the new one from Joanne Shaw Taylor and fingers-crossed, Aynsley Lister's new album will make it out before 2012 ends.

Re: 2012 Album of the year so far.

Warren Haynes Band - Live at the Moody Theater.

That's the standout album for me, but overall I feel like this year hasn't been too spectacular with new albums - there's a lot of good ones out there, but not too many that had me on the edge of my seat.
I liked Royal Southern Brotherhood a lot and I'm still waiting for Van Morrison's and Joanne's new album. Also Gov't Mule's box set from the Georgia shows comes out in October. So maybe all the good stuff is still to come.

Even though it's utter sacrilege to say that here, but DTTD is not amongst my favorites this year. To me it still sounds like the songs are pieced together hastily and it doesn't have any "roundness" to it, if you know what I mean. Granted there's some great tracks on there (especially the title track), but as an album in the classical sense it didn't really convince me. But then again, you can't make all the people happy all the time. wink

Blackberry Smoke - The Whippoorwill, I forgot about that one. That is one damn fine cd!!!

I like ReverendPaul's list, and would add Bonnie Raitt's "slipstream", and not just because it's been so long since we had a new release from her.

Play like you've worked at it, and don't worry about sounding like your influences.  You can't cheat on them, or your practice, anyway.  If you've worked hard at your skill, your audience will know it.

Re: 2012 Album of the year so far.

Well, of the dozen or so new releases I've purchased this year these stand out:

Pat Metheny Unity Band - great record and the band was even more sensational live. My favorite live set this year.
Sonny Landreth - Elemental Journey - instrumental album from my favorite slide guitarist. A different side of Sonny.
Walter Trout - Blues For The Modern Daze - Walter is my favorite modern day blues songwriter and this is some of his best writing.

Re: 2012 Album of the year so far.

No 1 is not from 2012 but I bought it this year:
Mason Rack Band - double CD album from 2009 - Live from Canada.
I don't think that I ever heard an album that often before.
And the two shows that I've seen from the Mason Rack Band this year were f#?!ing amazing too.
They let the wild animals out ... Yiehaaaaaaaa! Can't wait that they will hit the road again in Europe next year.

Re: 2012 Album of the year so far.

I think this is probably the wildcard but I would say "A Different Kind of Truth - Van Halen".

They just came back with a vengeance and put out a massive rock album. They proved they weren't over the hill and could still do it, with some kick **** songs that were modern and not the same old 80's stuff.

Re: 2012 Album of the year so far.

A toss up between Joe Walsh/Analog Man & Royal Southern Brotherhood. Have yet heard either Uno, Dos, or Tres, Green Day's new 3 album releases. Out of 3 discs there should be some pretty good material.
