I like the R8 Plaintops. I think they offer a great combination of playability, aesthetics, tone, and price.
I also like the slightly larger neck over the R0 on the R8 and R9 models.
YMMV - try them all and see which one you like.

The number basically indicates the year in which they're based, R8=1958 etc.
I think the neck is thickest on the R8 and thinnest on the R0 with the R9 in the middle.
I personally like the thinner 60s style neck. Easier to play the upper register of the neck but that's just me. I know some people do prefer the neck fitting fully into your hand but I also think some people feel the need if a large neck like its something to boast about..? Just feeling I get from some people I talk to. Though a slightly larger neck does feel nice in your hand and seems to alleviate some hand fatigue since the thin necks leave a gap between palm and neck. I've never played any reissue so as far as what sounds of reacts better, I couldn't help you there. They sure look pretty though!
R8 is basically the same as the R9 with a slightly thicker neck, plain maple top and the VOS finish, R9 adds in the fancy top and glossy finish, R0 has some cosmetic differences, chiefly in the reflector knobs and sometimes the look of the pickups but it has the slim taper neck.
I've got an R8 and it's very nice, I like the understated charm of a plain top, plus you pay a lot more for the fancy top and some of them really dont look that special.
NB: All historics are solid body (No weight relief at all) unless it is prefixed with a "C" ie "CR8" which have the full chambering.
I've just bought a R8 sunrise Teaburst plain top( although it has a killer flame) after selling my JBLP.......it's an amazing guitar and by far the best LP I've ever owned or played.....the sustain even when not plugged in is incredible.......this will be my companion for life!........and a £1000 less than a R9!!!!
I'd love to feel the difference in neck thicknesses.
I bought a Gibson custom Wildwood spec plaintop '58 a few months back, it's just fabulous guitar. Give those guys at Wildwood a call and they can tell you more than you need to know about all of those models. You can also hear each guitar on videos from their website. You really need to get each one in your hand though as that is where you will notice the most difference.

Don't have an R-9, never laid hands on one. I do however own an amazing R-8 plain top. The neck is thicker than any other guitar I have ever played, (I love it), amazing tone and sustain. Unplugged you can hear it resonate. I use it more than my R-7, which I also find to be an amazing guitar. My R-8 is my go to.
The G0 which is a R0 plaintop made specifically for Guitar Center is a smokin guitar. Necks are usually a little meatier than the standard R0 and most of them weigh in at 8.5-9 lbs. All of them I a have played have been smokin guitars. You can find 2007 2008 models for around 2300 give or take a little. The prices on these used have crept up just a little as folks are re-discovering them.
Good luck!!
58 Plain tops are still the best bang for the buck today.....
Gibson's flame tops are not what they used to be....if you need the flame top buy a clean used one...
I've got a R8. Always preferred fat necks and maybe that's the point. I once met my guitar
and that was it, she feels so right and plays so right.
Yes, i love a nice flame but so far no other guitar crosses my way to change my plaintop.
I don't have an R0, but I do have an R8 and an R9, both 2007's as well as a 2003 R7. All good guitars and each with their own quirkes and personalities. The neck on the R8 is thicker, the R7 thicker still, but I find the neck on the R9 just about right. The R8 resonates a little better but all have a sweet tone and lovely sustain. I don't find upper fret access too bad on any of them, regardless of neck thickness, but obviously it's not as good in that respect as my SG, Hamer Sunburst and PRS Golden Eagle, all doublecuts.
