If you run the amp clean it will work better with it, but it would work best in the effects loop. Why are you not wanting to use the effects loop?
What are the advantages with using them in the loop?
For delay and reverb type pedals it is best in the effects loop. They seem to be more clearer and do not tend to run away when put after the preamp. Try putting your delay in the loop. I would bet you will hear and perhaps feel the difference.
