Ooops! Don't be counting those chickens just yet.

Irregardless of what happens, Rick (30-14 as I write) we've already seen more good football from the Skins in every department (blocked punt notwithstanding) than we've seen this century! We've scored 30 points, which we never managed last season!

We have the first, proper, class QB in a very, very long time! Skins fans all over the world are gobsmacked by what they've seen so far, check various combinations of RG3 on Twitter going ballistic. Can't remember when I was last so happy watching a Skins team. Probably Theisman and Riggins era.... big_smile

Robert Griffin III shines in NFL debut

NEW ORLEANS -- Robert Griffin III began his NFL career by connecting on 19 of 26 passes for 320 yards and two touchdowns, and the Washington Redskins handed the New Orleans Saints a 40-32 loss in their first game since the "bounty" scandal that overshadowed the Saints' offseason.

Griffin completed his first eight passes, including an 88-yard touchdown pass to Pierre Garcon, tying for the second-longest scoring pass by a quarterback making his NFL debut.

Rookie running back Alfred Morris rushed for 96 yards and two touchdowns. Aldrick Robinson, making his NFL debut, had a touchdown catch among four receptions for 52 yards.

Drew Brees uncharacteristically struggled with accuracy, completing only 46 percent of his throws with two interceptions. But his 339 yards passing and three TDs kept the Saints in the game until his last desperate pass was picked off by Reed Doughty near the Redskins' goal line.

The final score doesn't really do the game justice. It wasn't that close. The Skins totally dominated the first half and had way more possession, thereby keeping Brees off the field for extended periods.

This was the Skin's first starting rookie QB since 1960. His 88 yd TD pass was the longest by a rookie starter since at least 1940. The Skins scored 40 pts in a game for the first time since 05, and did that in NOLA!!! In honor of RG3's number, we scored 10 pts in each period. cool

The Skins played the best football any Skins fan could recall since sometime last century. Skins fans saw the most exciting, and self-assured QB since way back last century!!

Alfred Morris is a potential monster, remember that name!

Even controversial decisions went for us! No matter what happens during the rest of the season, we're already on a winner because with RG3 out there we've got a chance. Credit also to the much maligned OL for giving him enough protection. For large parts of this game, we really looked like the 2011 Saints and they looked like the 2011 Skins. Unbelievable!

I pinched myself repeatedly because I could hardly believe my eyes. I am SO ****ing stoked for the rest of the season! big_smile

Re: The NFL - National Football League

right you are Gdawg, Alfred Morris is a beast. my son is already trying to get him added to his fantasy team. he is hard to bring down, was always going forward like the 4th and inches in the first half. He reminds me of Trent Richardson with a little less lateral quickness, but not by much. I have never seen a rookie QB performance like that, he hit on passes all over the field and it didn't matter if he had good footing, was off balance, or throwing all the way across the field. the accuracy was amazing.
Atlanta looked good, a lot of the "experts" had KC winning that game. congrats to the 49ers for also getting it done on the road, where's Roy? I've adopted Carolina for my team this year roll , they looked awful at Tampa.

In the old days he would have been the classic fullback. There were sometimes 4-6 guys hanging on him and he still didn't go down! The boy has incredible strength and, as you say Tres, he's always going forward and grinds out that extra yard.

A few quotes from the WP -

“He’s a sight for sore eyes,” veteran linebacker London Fletcher told reporters, speaking for everyone who has witnessed the Redskins’ parade of mediocrity at quarterback these last however-many years.

On its surface, Griffin’s assignment in Week 1 was the toughest imaginable for an NFL debut: Go on the road, to one of the loudest, most intimidating environments in the league, to face a team that had won 13 games in 2011. In recent weeks, the Redskins’ coaches had begun lobbying subtly for a lowering of expectations for Griffin, pointing out the historical struggles of great quarterbacks like Peyton Manning, whose team went 3-13 as a rookie, or Troy Aikman, who went 0-11.

Rookie quarterbacks are supposed to be jittery, quick-triggered and mistake-prone. Indianapolis’s Andrew Luck, the No. 1 pick of this year’s draft (Griffin was No. 2), threw three interceptions Sunday in his debut, a 20-point loss to Chicago. Miami’s Ryan Tannehill and Cleveland’s Brandon Weeden, both first-round picks, combined for seven interceptions in their debuts Sunday.

Griffin led the Redskins to scores on each of their first four drives, including an 88-yard touchdown strike to receiver Pierre Garcon that Griffin watched unfold from the Superdome floor, having been knocked down by a vicious hit from Saints safety Malcom Jenkins. As Garcon broke free near midfield and won a sprint to the end zone, Griffin raised both index fingers to the sky.

And what about the ball? It made its way to the Redskins’ bench, where it was placed in safekeeping until after the game – whereupon it was returned to the man who had sent it into the sky, the man who would still be cradling it 45 minutes later, in the bowels of the Superdome.

Griffin had his trophy, the Redskins had their victory, and at last long Washington, by all appearances, had a quarterback in whom it was safe to believe.

But all you really had to do to understand Sunday’s import was trust your eyes, because what your eyes told you was this: The Redskins simply have not witnessed anything like this game in a long, long time, and have never witnessed anyone like Griffin – fast and agile and smart, with an arm like a rocket-launcher -- in roughly forever.

If Washington was already gripped by RGIII fever, the anticipation building all summer for the debut of the most heavily hyped rookie quarterback in franchise history, what will become of the region now – after Griffin led the Redskins to a season-opening upset victory that felt like the start of some new era?

Remember that only Green Bay at Lambeau score 40 pts against the Saints last year, and that the Skins hadn't scored 40 in  a game since 05! Remember also that we've been subjected to years of the likes of Beck, Grossman, McNabb, Campbell, et al roll

That's why the  bolded bits are the crunchers for me - it really did look like football we haven't seen in decades, a QB who literally made your jaw drop on his first game, and the feeling that whatever happens this season numbers wise (I'll take a .500+) this truly was the beginning of a new era for the Skins! I shall boldly predict that we will not finish last in the NFC East! big_smile

not an easy schedule George, I just looked and notables are week 5 vs Atlanta, weeks 7 and 13 vs the Giants, week 12 at Dallas and Dallas at home to end the season. He also gets to play a much improved Tampa Bay team, and gets to go up against Luck at some point. Doesn't look like he's going to need any luck. smile

We beat Luck and the Colts 30-17 in preseason. Apart from playing all AFC North and NFC South teams, we also play the Rams and Vikings. A .500 season should be within the realms of possibility if RG3 produces anything like what he looks to be capable of. Who knows, the Skins might even get 'infected' by the Nat's success this season, wherever that might end. wink

Re: The NFL - National Football League

RGIII looked amazing in the Skin's defeat of N.O.  No doubt that Daniel Snyder is feeling alot better about what they had to give up in order to move up in the draft to get him.  Other rookie QB's didn't do so well.  Peyton had to knock offf some of the cobwebs but by the end of the game, he was back in form with the no huddle casuing the Steelers D to gasp for air.  49'ers looked outstanding in their defeat of the Packers

Re: The NFL - National Football League

The Eagles played terrible, looked terrible...just ugly...but won the game.  This season is going to be either more of the same old, same old, like last season, OR Vick gets hurt early in the season and the rookie quarterback steps in. I'm having a hard time envisioning Vick making it deep into the season. This may be Andy Reid's last season with the Eagles, the owner expects a better season and Andy may be ready to regroup after his personal tragedy...

I was happy to see Peyton shine for the Broncos.  And, George, it looks like you are gettin' a double whammy with your baseball & football teams. Enjoy it while it lasts! wink

First Monday night game with lots of storied animosity on both sides. Chargers without our #1 back  so the air will lead the way. The book seems the same on our OT Gaither who appears to be milking a mysterious injury and looks to be a flop with a rookie filling in on River's blind side yikes . Can we stop the Raiders ground game? Lots of speed on both sides so it should be a race to the finish with a one score differential.

Wow, can't believe it is already here. Football season.  I will say having Peyton Manning in our division kind upset the balance of the universe in our division.

Well, it's a new look for the Raiders but one thing I will know for sure.  Our secondary can't suck any worse than last year.  Can't tell much from pre-season, but we know we let go of the right DBs.
Tommy Kelly is looking like a beast.  So I can't wait to see what he is going to bring tonight.

New coaches, new scheme.  Glad we on prime time and I am hoping, my man, Run DMC is going to light up that stadium.  Darren this is your night to shine, so you can get a McDonald's endorsement.

Aaron Curry, who they really need at LB is injured for about 6 weeks, so they will be missing him.

The Raiders got rid of some of their fat from last year, so hopefully they will be looking leaner and meaner.  This will be Carson's team this year, and we will see how he and the receivers will do.

This will be an interesting match-up Rick.  We both are kind of seeing what we got.  I am kind of looking for the Raiders to get better as the season progresses. But this is a great match-up for Monday Night.

Rick, tell your Bolts to be gentle with McFadden and it's Happy Meals for the whole team wink

Re: The NFL - National Football League

I realize the Bears win was against a mediocre Colts team, but if the O line can hold up,people may start referring to Chicago's offense as "high powered", something that has not occurred in my lifetime. Brandon Marshall convinced me that he is a "Bona" fide #1 receiver. Add in a budding star in Alshon Jeffrey, Devin Hester, Matt Forte, Michael Bush and, of course, Jay Cutler...the Bears could make some noise this year.

Re: The NFL - National Football League

BTW, highlights of the week IMO:
SF beats GB on the road (a statement game)
RG III leads Skins over NO
Peyton Manning back in form
Adrian Peterson back in form

I also realized a guy named Luck wound up on the perfect team...one with a horseshoe in their helmet!

The Raiders need to quit putting their hopes on the 2 Heisman slugs from SC and let Terrelle Pryor "shake n bake" the offense. That was a pathetic effort tonight.

Re: The NFL - National Football League

McFadden is a great back, but that offense is a one trick pony. Losing the long snapper was a disaster. Bolts need to put it in and finish an opponent on the ropes, but we'll take a W in the Black Hole any day, any way. I almost felt sorry for the fans watching thier team shoot themselves in the foot time after time but.... tongue
