Topic: guilty pleasure tuneage

Ok..so I was having this conversation with a friend last night about tunes we were embarrassed to admit we like.  You know the sort of thing that you bop around your apartment to but would be mortified to have your friends find  in your music collection.  Hers was...OMG i couldn't believe it...Hmm Bop by Hanson!!!  (this is a gal who loves Gary Clark Jr...Adele...etc)

Soooooooooo...being that we have the safety of being anonymous on an internet forum..who's brave enough to step forward and come clean about the horrendous pop tune they can't stop humming along to when it comes on the radio?  (me go first?  nah...mine is so shameful...soooo shameful...im saving it up till a few others bravely come forward. hehe)

Re: guilty pleasure tuneage

I'll bite! One tune that's classified as "pop" that I dig is Sausalito Summernight by the Dutch band Diesel. I really don't feel guilty at all for liking it as the intro/hook could land a 20 foot shark, it's that tight. If I feel guilty about this song for one reason it's because of the "Frisco" references in the lyrics. A total "1 Hit Wonder" you might say.

Re: guilty pleasure tuneage

One song I always crank the $hit out of on the radio is Alone, by Heart.. for a guy, that may be classified as on the sissy side but I don't care, I like the song! And I will admit, sometimes I'll listen to a Katy Perry song if one comes up while scanning the stations..thats as far as I'm going for now.

Hmmm... loving the music of Adele shouldn't be a guilty pleasure, imo
I love her as well, and i'm open about it, proud even, to the point of starting a topic here about her.

My response would be - try not to feel guilty about liking/loving something that your peers may disapprove of.
This, of course does require a strength of character. But you'll be amazed at the freedom it gives you.

Re: guilty pleasure tuneage

HI Brack..i think you misunderstood the Adele reference.  What i meant was my friend usually has great taste..(as witnessed by her liking of GCjr and Adele)---but then loves the poppy Hanson tune.
My tongue was firmly in my cheek when i talked about guilty pleasures and not fessing up to your friends about your love of some less than genius tuneage.
Hey Helrazr84--love that old Heart Song too. And Hot and Cold by Katy Perry....could have been written about my ex--i crank it too!

Re: guilty pleasure tuneage

One that comes to mind for me would be "Honey, I'm Home" by Shania Twain.  I actually saw her on a televised performance of a local Chicago concert, and I got hooked.  I guess I could say I showed up for a look at her, and stayed for some of the tunes.

I've long been a fan of Southern Rock, but used to say I drew the line at country.  But that line's a bit dotted, in some areas.  I also own a Neal McCoy disc, only for "If You Can't Be Good, Be Good At It".  Can't say I've pulled either of those out, in quite some time though.  But I'm feeling inspired. wink

OK Miss pelajane1...time for you to confess.  Or we'll subject you to the "Comfy Chair".  We have ways of making you talk....

EDIT:  I guess the ultimate for me would have to be confessing to buying the Spice Girls' album, back in the day.  But I was married at the time, and she liked them...yeah, that's my excuse, and I'm sticking with it.

Play like you've worked at it, and don't worry about sounding like your influences.  You can't cheat on them, or your practice, anyway.  If you've worked hard at your skill, your audience will know it.

Gary Numan - Cars. I don't usually do techno sounding music as I am more of a rocker but there is something about that tune.

Awesome! I loved Gary's first two albums. "Are Friends Electric" was a great tune from his 1st album.

My guilty pleasure is this little ditty I heard on a Heineken commercial. Cute, catchy and I can't get it out of my head.

Your husband didn't have any nerve!  If he did, he would of put it x2 (one, think the battle of the leg lamp in the movie Christmas Story-"you did that on purpose"..."it was an accident" lol) in the neighbors trash... yikes

R-O-C-K in the USA....the other stuff? It's all just disco and disco still SUCKS!  Except Johnny Taylor Disco Baby.  That was way out of character for the bluesy soul singer, and proof disco was a one hit fad! yikes The Bee Gees aren't disco, they're talented!!!

Party ON Wayne, Party ON Garth, Hehhhaaha hehheheeehaaa Beavis & Butthead, May Rock Live Forever, May disco be consigned to torture status by the old time rock and roll take them old records off the shelf literally 10 minutes late for the door grateful (voluntary) velvet rope outcasts and always used in internationally decreed illegal interrogation 'camps"! lol

Re: guilty pleasure tuneage

I went to discos back in the day.  Motivated primarily by a desire to dance with good looking women.  Used to be a place called "Some Other Place" (known as S.O.P.) back in the day.  Up near O'Hare Airport.  Lots of stewardesses on layover.  (No pun intended.)

But I never owned a disco album.  (Instead I had a "Disco Sucks" T-Shirt.)  When I was really young, I used to roller skate on weekends (not inline, back then), but that was pre-disco.  I can remember skate dancing to some pretty embarassing numbers, though.  But again, an excuse to be with girls....

C'Mon Rocket, you probably have some guilty pleasure tunes you can share.  It's cathartic.  (Or were Disco Baby and Bee Gees reference your admission?)

There's certainly no arguing with the success of the Bee Gees.

By the way pelajane1, I'm cursing you for putting that miserable MMMM Bop back in my head.  I used to wish evil things for those Devil's Munchkins.

Re: guilty pleasure tuneage

Whilst Blues and Blues based Rock has always been my favourite music I have so many guilty pleasures that I wonder how I can sleep at night! I too liked disco back in the 70s but of the more recent dance artists it takes a lot of courage to admit that I have a soft spot for Anastacia. There, I've said it.

I also have a great liking for Traditional Irish Folk Music and the Chieftains in full flow playing a Jig or a Reel can be very uplifting. Not quite in the same league as Joe playing Sloe Gin but nonetheless very enjoyable.

Re: guilty pleasure tuneage

At least Anastacia could sing, and she had other things going for her. lol
