Topic: John Mayer

Hey all- I got a chance to see John Mayer down here in Tampa last night- one of the best concerts I've ever been to!  Except for Joe's of course smile No disrespect to Joe here intended (Joe's still lightyears ahead of everyone else smile )... Just like probably everyone else here, I heard people praising JM for being a great guitarist, and, probably like some people here, I responded with a certain "yeah... sure... the same guy who plays Your Body is a Wonderland (which actually grew on me a bit after hearing it again last night) is a great BLUES guitarist..."  but trust me- he is.  He's got a great sparkling overdriven tone- great fluid phrasing- some good ideas and he can write songs like nobody's business.  I especially like Good Love is on the Way- great rock song with a bit of Blues thrown in for good measure.  Sure he has a lot of Stevie in him- but he's by no means a SRVaughanabe- he has his own distinct styling and it really works wonders.  If Mayer comes to your town you owe it to yourself to see him - not only because he's a great guitar player but he's one fine musician on top of that.  Again- no disrespect to Joe here- he's tops on my list for musicians by far!  But John Mayer is worth checking out- and if you're thinking "I don't like the material on his studio CD's very much" he is 10,000 times better live.  All in all he's worth checking out.

Scott

Oh yeah forgot to mention- he's a pretty funny guy too... really works well with the audience...

and here's some JM comedy for you- never knew he could do this too: http://youtube.com/watch?v=iLJ7-ojmAfs

Re: John Mayer

Hey Scott:

Thanks for the JM review. I am sure you will catch heck from others on the Board, but i will join you in praise for him.

I was very impressed with his talent at the Dallas Crossroads Fest a couple of years back. I have not seen a full show yet, but will try and tap the bank for the ticket prices and outrageous handling fees he gets these days the next time he is in Oregon.

His performance with EC on Good Morning America recently was really tasty.

As far as CD's, I suggest passing on Continuum and instead pick up the John Mayer Trio-Live CD, which is far better shows his talent and pipes. That CD gets a lot of play in my player. He can rock the house without some of the over producing that comes out in other CD's.

We all need other artists to tide us over between JBB shows! It has been over (2) years since Joe's last visit to Oregon. We need a Joe fix BAD!! Next month's show in Grants Pass will give us a much needed "fix" in Southern Oregon.

Re: John Mayer

I have a Mayer dvd from Austin city limits thats pretty good.  He's joined by Buddy Guy and he holds his own.  Looks like he's having alot of fun.  Can't really listen to his radio hits. To poppy for me.  My 2 cents ....

Take care everyone. And if I don't meet you no more in this world
Then ill, I'll meet you in the next one and don't be late, don't be late

Re: John Mayer

Yeah could a flamotory topic but I have seen John three times now, latest at Crossroads and in Charlotte on the first of August.  He puts on a great show and loves to play the guitar and he is not half bad.  I don't think that Eric would have invited him if he didn't feel the same way.  Not a fan of his earlier pop stuff and he admits that he would rather play blues/rock type music now.  But he is helping others to get turned on to blues/rock and this should help our favorite, Joe.

Music is good for the Soul...

Re: John Mayer

I've seen him three times. Each time gets better.

John Mayer lack street credibility with some fans for whatever reason. Most likely his pop sucess from 2002. That was five years ago. It appears he is in good with the blues artists themselves though - clapton, guy, bb king, etc.

Think of blues players that went pop: Steve Winwood, Rod Stewart - it is a two way street in my opinion. Let JM do his thing. I'd say the bottom line is this. If you want blues to be on the radio? The blues needs JM. It could help save the blues. If gospel players in the old days could switch to blues back then, then why not pop players today?

I think blues fans for the most part have their arms wide open no matter who is playing it. I guess its not everybody though.

Re: John Mayer

The only gripe I had was RS calling him the "greatest"...I think he is great. I've read that he would like to play more guitar at his shows, but the audience wants to hear his radio songs. He's young and very soulful. He was a pleasure to watch at Crossroads. I'm sure he'll be around for a while...Cathy

Re: John Mayer

He does play a TON of guitar at his gigs. I was personally more a fan of his guitar playing a few years back before anyone in the genereal public even knew he played electric guitar, he'd still do long solos and Hendrix covers every now and then and his playing was alot cleaner and more interesting imo, it seems like his playing has become a bit sloppy and reckless and relying alot on Clapton esque ideas lately. That said he still puts on a great show and is probably one of the better guitarists out of male singer songwriters.

The only thing I don't agree with is that I think he is getting a little TOO much praise for his playing. There are tons of other guitarists out there that are far better players and actually taking the guitar to another level, (eg Joe and Philip Sayce) who don't get any recognition. I think some of the media and his fans are getting confused John is not where he is due to his guitar playing, its because of his songwriting.

Re: John Mayer

I definetly agree with you Ron- Try! is a great CD... I don't get why everyone holds his pop background against him- if the man can play guitar he can and JM can play the guitar- enough said...

Re: John Mayer

He is up there with all the success stories of the last few years that I just don't get.

White Stripes, Dave Mathews, Flaming Lips, Wilco. If I had to pick my poison I would choose Mayer to drive me insane.

I did like his solo at Crossroads on his last song that I saw briefly.  I can only wish that his message board has as much Bonamassa as this message board has Mayer.

Message to John. If you want to be partly responsible for saving the blues then invite a guy named Bonamassa to tour with you.

I love that last part Jim...well said!!

Re: John Mayer

Jess-Personally I think Clapton embraced Mayer primarily because of his songwriting abilities.

And jim-there is something very similar about Dave Matthews and John Mayer's style of singing.   The White Stripes popularity totally puzzles me. (no offense to any fans) There are some songs that are so rough, raw and primitive, I feel like I could get a few kindergarteners to bang on my drum set and scream a little and sound just as good!  I like some of their more polished songs. I've tried really hard to like them, it's like a bad relationship...too much work!

Re: John Mayer

Jim can you say career sucide?  You know how many dudes & chicks would break up after that tour???!!!  At least the ones seeing Joe (whose career would not die)...actually when I think about it, seriously, it may be the best thing both of them could hope for....seriously...and the blues would suffer nary a whit!!!

I can just see it now...

Joe: We're going on first!
John: No, we're going on first - but we're pulling out all the stops!

Remind you of something? The Who/Jimi Hendrix concert of course. smile

Angela - I like the white stripes, back to basics - nothing is sacred.

also - john mayer's mesage board stinks, the people lack intellect.

jim m - Tommy Castro was opening for John Mayer for a bit, but I agree the Joe could fill the card.

A good G3 tour could be kws, jm and jb -

Re: John Mayer

John Mayer is an absolute genius.  Though Joe's improvising is far more advanced, John uses a certain sophisticated subtlety in his improvising, with far more emphasis on rhythmic motifs.  Mayer's song writing and use of interesting chord shapes/progressions is absoltely phenomenal and far beyond most young blues players.  He also understands the tradition on the blues, and injects it into all his music, and is on a quest to make the average mainstream audience aware of it.  It took me a while to realize what a treasure Mayer is, but he will absolutely go down in history as one of the legendary guitarists songwriters and artists of our time.

I've been a major Mayer fan for about 5 years now. It'll be interesting to hear how his career pans out and where his next album will take him. I agree that his songwriting is really unique and the songs harmonic structures are quite complex. He's got the talent to be as good a guitarist as probably anyone, it seems like he doesn't work on it that much anymore (not practising) which is something I've noticed from following his career for so long. As far as being a legendary guitarist I don't know if hes pushing the boundaries or doing much different from other people. That said some of his right hand techniques are pretty unique as is his chordal work. I'd like to hear him really stretch out his soloing capabilities and show some improvement because if he could I'd say he could go down in history as a legendary guitarist and show all the doubters up.

And I think the idea of him getting Joe to open would be awesome but I don't know if John would feel like soloing after having Joe burn the place up!!!

Re: John Mayer

I think he'll walk the line like Clapton has been doing the last decade or so.  Talking about blues, playing some of it, and coming out with albums that get attention from the masses.
