I'm another greedy one and I too would say "Happy Birthday" for the $$$$$$...then I could afford to write whatever I wanted. Of course, I have O talent.     Cathy

I saw Crosby Stills & Nash a few days ago and they played a half dozen covers.
After the first, they gave an explanation: Their record label wants them to make an album of songs that they wish they had written. They played Norwegian Wood, Behind Blue Eyes, Ruby Tuesday, Long May you Run, Midnight Rider and at least one other that I can't recall right now.
So, anyone have any song(s) you wish you'd written??

The first one that came to my mind was "Asking Around for You"....my 2nd thought was "Stormy Monday".

Forgive me, but I think I would've written one of those annoying pop hits that made a boatload of money.  lol

You stole my thunder on this one. Exactly what I was thinking...something that not only made a load of cash, but that continues to generate royalty checks to this day. Just give me a handful of those songs that classic rock radio continues to play today, like Stairway to Heaven, Free Bird, Won't Get Fooled Again, etc.

Close with Freebird Stu, but Sweet Home Alabama is a "cash cow". It's not only made buckets of money on its own merit as a classic beloved rock song, but it's gotten a lot of mileage as a commercial earner. An interviewer asked Ed King once if he was bitter about his second falling out he had with Skynyrd after they started touring again in the '90's. His response was, yeah I'm not real happy about it, but I''ll be OK, after all I wrote Sweet Home Alabama(w/ Ronnie Van Zant).

Holy thread resurrection, Batman....

Just because I like it a lot, "Smashing Young Man" by Collective Soul.  Actually, there's a few of their earlier tunes I wish I had the talent to come up with.

Same with much of the Jethro Tull catalog (Thick as a Brick, for example), or loads of Motown/R&B tunes (Respect Yourself), or the Allman Bros. (Jessica), or Steely Dan (Reeling in the Years, even if only that freaking solo).

Play like you've worked at it, and don't worry about sounding like your influences.  You can't cheat on them, or your practice, anyway.  If you've worked hard at your skill, your audience will know it.

had no idea there were any Collective Soul fans here. big fan, just love their live DVD with the Atlanta Youth Orchestra. I wish I had written The World I Know. and maybe Shine for the big bucks associated.
