Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Well, that wasn't quite the battle of two ace pitchers that everyone had expected, though at least Strasburg got a win out of a lesser performance. Not only do the Nats have the best road record in baseball at 41-23, their road record is also better than anyone else's home record!

Yet another perfect game....are they becoming easier?...or only against the Rays? tongue

Buehrle vs Halladay today in Miami was the first time since 1963 that both starting pitchers had both a no-hitter and a perfect game to their name. There's a whole stat department somewhere that supplies stuff like this. big_smile

Felix is the real deal - it was only a matter of time. If he got more run support, his record would be amazing. This year alone he's pitched complete game shutouts against the Red Sox, the Rangers, and most recently the Yankees (in Yankee Stadium), all pretty decent offensive clubs. Add to that yesterday's perfecto and I think you've got the best pitcher in baseball right now.

I agree on that Stu. He is really in a groove.

Interesting discussion on the morning sports talk re Strasburg and the innings left to his theoretical end of arm this season. Should the Nats sit him and save those innings for post season when they will really be needing him? They look to be a near lock for World Series play (not to throw water in JDawg's direction but....) and also have the home field advantage if they get through the playoffs. Not many chances come up for a team like them. They owe a best effort to go all the way to the fans.

On a bright note, voting today for the new ownership in Padre town. The cash rich conglomerate vows to put a winning team up for us. Not just a rebuild, but a total effort to produce a consistent winner. We wait in hope!!!!! San Diego fans will support a winner but shun losing teams. If they want to make money, the fans are there to pack the house. Maybe we even get a resolution to the cable tv impasse which has cut off half the area from team coverage all season and really caused a huge drop off in support.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Kris Medlen (ex bullpen guy) pitched a brilliant complete game last night vs Padres, but it was Chipper's night to shine. The 20,000 fans that arrived early would have been satisfied just getting the bobblehead regardless of the outcome. but NOOOOOOOOOO that wasn't good enough for the old man.

Chipper also passed Dave Winfield on the all time homers list last night.

Rob got his first MLB hit (2B)  last night vs the Rockies.  He went 1 for 3 in the Marlins loss and he had one pickoff from behind the plate.  Miami is aweful, but it's fun to keep up with someone you know.  Next update on his first HR.

Time for the Pads to play spoilers. Stand by JDawg. Maybe the confirmed new owners will give them a boost. Phil Mickleson is reported to have ponied up $60M as his share. Pretty good money for hitting a ball around with a club.

BAH!!! The baseball world thinks the Giants are through without Melky, but we still have Posey, Panda, Cain, Bumgarner, & Pence. Hell on any given day any player can go down with an injury, but you play on and SF has plenty of weapons left in the arsenal. It all depends on how bad they want it. Don't know how much of this series I'll see as I'm out the door to Pine Mtn. Lake/Yosemite area, however thunderstorms are in the forecast so we may watch more TV than usual. One things for sure, we'll be glued to the TV @ 11:00 Sunday morning watching the Petaluma Little Leaguers.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Well Tres, the three games starting tonight could just about decide the NL East race. A sweep for us would put us eight up, a sweep for you would put you only two behind. It should be a cracking series between two very good teams. I'll be sitting here at the pc to watch! wink

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

I'm looking forward to it George, but there is still a ways to go to the end of season. We have our 3 best starters (as of now) going against you guys. It probably won't be a sweep either way, so I'm just hoping for a 2-1 split in our favor. we need to break out some bats in order to do that.

I know it's too little too late for us Seattle fans, but heads up...I'll go on record to say the Mariners will be a contender next year. I really like what Eric Wedge and Jack Zduriencik are doing. And no, I didn't know how to spell Zduriencik without google.

Agree that a 2-1 is most likely, one way or t'other. Your boys will be facing Zimmerman, Strasburg and Detwiler, which should lead to some epic, but low-scoring games. Desmond is 0 for 11 since returning from DL, he's bound to start hitting any day now, and Harper seems to have recovered his early season form with two homers and a triple in the last three games.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

I went to bed at 4-4 in the sixth, confident in the expectation that if the game went to extra innings, we would wind up winning - one way or another! The Nats have been almost unbeatable in extra innings this season. Both teams (apparently) had plenty of opportunities to take a lead in regular play but stranded loads of runners. Of course, it doesn't have to be pretty, a win is a win! big_smile

Nats now at .623 and 30 games over .500 - these stats are like some kind of dream, they sound utterly unreal in view of the history of Washington teams since the early 19th century. I'd be feeling pretty confident about the post season were it not for the bizarre fact that the playoff systems used for US sports more often than not throw up an eventual winner other than the team that has been best throughout the regular season.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

you did pretty good George, must have been around 3 AM your time. I went on to bed in the 9th as they were going to extras, and not with a good feeling about it. We left 14 men on base, untimely hitting at it's best. Yep, as far as post season play you gotta be hot or you go home in a hurry. I hope you're not dogging my Alabama Crimson Tide. lol

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

The Giants beat Clayton Kershaw again, not the nemesis he used to be for them. They did it w/o the dirty Melkman too. Moved back into 1st by 1/2 a game, Gi's just need to keep doin' what they've been doin' and get to the second season. Like Tres said, that's when you need to step it up and get hot.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

That rain delay killed me again, so I went to bed, especially as there was no stream to watch and I had to rely on Braves radio. I understand that Strasburg's pitching was pretty awesome! I now expect a sweep as the Nats go from strength to strength! cool

A great day for my AL interest too, with the O's winning while the Yankees and Rays both lost. Nice to see Jdawg's Gigantes back on top too. big_smile

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

I had a bad feeling when the rainbow came out prior to the rain delay. I was hoping SS would not return, but it was only about an hour delay. He came back and was dominating. I watched as Paul Janish headed back to the bench just shaking his head, not like there was anything wrong with him but rather that the pitches were unhittable, impossible. He was really throwing some sick stuff up there, wish you could have seen it George. We need one game today to save face, Medlen has pitched well since coming out of the bullpen.
