Re: Joe's show on Planet rock

Well, I just got done listening to Joe's show today. Had to listen to it Live since you now have to pay for On Demand. But I wasn't going anywhere today, so it's no big deal. Here's what he played:

Dr. John -= ELeggua
Gregg Allman - Checking On My Baby
ZZ Top - Hairdresser
Cream - NSU
West, Bruce & Laing - Third Degree
John Hiatt - Adios To California
The Faces - You're So Rude
Dire Straits - Your Latest Trick
Jeff Beck - Jailhouse Rock
Yes - Yours Is No Disgrace
Otis Rush - You're Killing My Love

Standouts for me were ZZ Top, John Hiatt, Dire Straits, Jeff Beck, & Otis Rush

Been trying to convince myself it's worth it, for access to Joe's show on demand, but so far the "no" vote is winning.  (And I've already got all of Joe's output, so the free d/l not going to tip the balance to "yes".)  But cool that they are doing that, for those who sign up.  Will be interesting to see how successful this is.

That forum link I posted might be biased, but nobody there seemed happy.

FWIW I did decide to pay for the reason that we have probably one of the only decent radio shows around. The owner ha put out an open letter which is worth a read. I know there has been some pretty  cutting stuff around, and each to his own, but this is the link. I can understand where he is coming from.

I'd be a paying member if the spiffs were useable over here. I sure can see where he is coming from. Trying to maneuver a small business through the endless flaming hoops govt. puts up is a real chore. Same thing over here.

Re: Joe's show on Planet rock

Thanks for sharing the link to Malcolm's open letter.  I don't feel much sympathy for his moaning about how much time, money and aggravation the Planet Rock venture has cost him.  He had to have expected that, going in.  Nobody is forcing him to continue, either.

But I do understand his point (and his ire).  And I don't blame him for trying to create another revenue stream.  Still, it's much harder to take something away from people than to never give it to them in the first place.  And sometimes you alienate people, when you do--even your most faithful fans.  Though as Malcolm said, nobody has to join, the station is still streaming live.  (I noted that as well, when I first posted on the subject.)

Though I was disappointed when I discovered there was no free on demand option, it wasn't a major surprise.

Unfortunately, my Sunday noons are rarely a chance to sit and listen to Joe's show.  I'll have to work on that.  Joe's musical tastes so mirror my own.

Play like you've worked at it, and don't worry about sounding like your influences.  You can't cheat on them, or your practice, anyway.  If you've worked hard at your skill, your audience will know it.

Re: Joe's show on Planet rock

I didn't catch all of Joe's show from last Sunday - the Glorious 12th (google it if you don't know what I'm talking about) - due to the Olympics being on TV, but I did hear him say that in 2 or 3 weeks he plans to play an hour of new music on his show. I assume by that it will be some of the new Blues Rock artists that many of us have been longing to hear on the radio - I really hope that it will be.

We could probably all suggest a few names but Joe mentioned that he will be selecting his playlist very carefully as he's keen to avoid any favouritism arguments etc. I'm sure Joe knows who the best new artists in the genre are anyway. I just hope that that the spread is International.

I'll definitely be listening to this show and can hardly wait.

BTW Joe, you must get some more soft furnishings in your house. It always sounds like you're broadcasting from the bathroom when you're in LA. lol

PS did anyone hear Joe ask who recognised the guitarist on Joe Lyn Turner's Honest Crime the week before? Answers to joe@planetrock.com. I had to smile to myself. big_smile

I had the answer posted in the first 3 bars. Hard to miss that sound. Agree on the echo, my thoughts as well. Time to have Sandi do some interior decorating, at least a carpet or two. Of course, maybe that bath is where he does the broadcast for privacy. lol

Re: Joe's show on Planet rock

Another enjoyable show from Joe yesterday. Something old, something new(ish), a little borrowed and plenty of Blues. I particularly enjoyed hearing Highway Star from DP's Made In Japan. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

I mentioned above that Joe would be recording a special show of music from young artists and bands for his Planet Rock Radio Hour in the near future. The show will be aired next Sunday, 16th September.

Joe has said all the music he will be playing will come from artists under 25. There are plenty of young 'uns (as Sister Cate calls them) on this side of the pond who qualify, but I don't know that many from across the pond. Let's hope that Joe's upper age limit is 25 so that Ryan McGarvey can qualify.

It's going to be fun to speculate who will make Joe's final cut and I shall be wishing the rest of this week away and counting down the hours until Sunday.

Phil

edited because I put last Sunday's date. Doh roll

Re: Joe's show on Planet rock

If you aren't listening to Joe's show NOW, you should be. As promised, some great tracks from very underated young talent and so far, all Brits (that was until Ana came on) but not under 25.

1.  Soul Station - JST from her new CD, Almost, Always, Never - this is a total knock out number that stopped me in my tracks.
2.  Running Out On Me - Aynlsey Lister
3.  Help Me - Sandi Thom (do I detect some bias here? Not that I'm complaining of course, 'cos I love Sandi's music too smile ).
4.  You Can Only Blame Yourself - Oli Brown
5.  Girl From The North Country (live) - Danny Bryant
6.  Poor Boy - Jeff Beck (featuring Imelda May)
7.  Count Me In - Ana Popovic (Ana's a demon on the slide)
8.  Better Man Blues - Matt Andersen
9.  Take A Ride - Jimmy Bowskill
10. You Belong To Me - Fatback Deluxe

Thanks for a great selection of new music Joe and yes, it definitely had the desired effect as I hadn't heard Jimmy Bowskill or Fatback Deluxe before. Very impressed with Jimmy Bowskill.

A great show today. Jimmy blew us away two years ago when he opened for Joe in Bonn. His career continues undiminished. His releases are well worth getting.

Re: Joe's show on Planet rock

Oh oh not enough VIP listeners :

Planet Rock owner Malcolm Bluemel is looking for someone to buy the UK’s leading all-digital radio station, believed to be losing £300,000 a year despite listener levels of over one million a week. Bluemel, who says he’s put £3m of his own money into the firm, says: “Digital radio has come of age and Planet Rock is at the forefront of that.” Earlier this year he defended himself against angry listeners who objected to his attempts to charge for premium content. Planet Rock launched 13 years ago and none of its contemporaries have survived.
