Re: Performance enhancing drug use

What I said above stands, but cheating or not, no holds barred, clean or rotten, all players and times considered, Barry Bonds is the best player the game has seen.  Yes I said that, Bobby Bonds in SF Giants Candlestick Park Heaven, did you hear me?!

Re: Performance enhancing drug use

My beef about Selig is you can't make an owner the commisioner even though his daughter is the suppossed owner of the Brewers these days. It's called conflict of interest and it's bad for baseball. By the way WHO dresses that guy? I'd love to hear about him and Bonds getting stuck in an elevator somewhere.

Don't know to what extent Maris did it, but the Mick drank like a fish quite often will Billy Martin and then the next day they'd counteract the previous nights effects by popping greenies or bennies (amphetamines) which were accepted much like a daily dose of vitamins. MLB did ban the stuff, effective just this season!!! My point is that every generation abused something to gain an edge. Where will it end???????

Not that it matters, but I didn't realize amphetamines helped make the ball go further.

That covers a ton of territory and is an opinion, albeit one shared by others.
I will say this: If I was starting a baseball team using players from any era, I could name 25 that I'd take BEFORE I took Barry Bonds, even though the majority might be inferior talent-wise. Here's a start:
Ripken, Mays, Clemente, Sandburg, Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Cobb, Hornsby, Aaron, A-rod, Joe Jackson, Mantle, Gibson, Koufax, Ryan, Seaver, Maddux, Clemens, Dizzy Dean, Walter Johnson, Cy Young, ...the pattern here is that these guys were all intense competitors and (other than Ty Cobb) were liked by their teammates and respected by their peers.

Re: Performance enhancing drug use

Nice line-up Bill, I think I would add to that list McCovey, Marichal, Vizquel (better defense at short), Brooks Robinson (same reason @ 3rd), Hoffman, Eckersley, Nenn (3 guys who are artists at closing out games), and Kenny Lofton (seems like wherever he lands at the trade deadline that team goes to the playoffs). A little side bar to peer respect, SI has a column called SI Players MLB Poll (players vote on topics related to current players), the May 21st topic was least friendliest players.

Re: Performance enhancing drug use

Shred,
Nice lineup! Looking at it made me think of a few other guys.
Mike Schmidt at 3B, and IMO the most unhittable relief pitcher ever, Bruce Sutter.
I watched Sutter for a number of years in Chicago and in his prime, he was automatic with any lead in the ninth.

Re: Performance enhancing drug use

Hi Roy, I know Mandarich was a freak, John Madden called him the best lineman he ever saw coming out of college. My biggest problem with the whole steroid issue has never been the players, it's the owners and corporate greed. It was all good to them, hell what do they care if athletes are juicing, look at the McGuire/ Sosa race for the Rogers record. If there is money to be made, then we'll turn the other cheek. Kids look up to theses athletes, that's where the real danger can lye, kids are fearless, think it worked for this guy, it will work for me. As far as myself doing roids, I would have done it if it meant keeping my job, you can bet some poor kid from the Dominican would have to take my job. Is it wrong yes, am I wrong , no question about it. I'll send you an e-mail sometime, I got some roid stories. In case your wondering, no, I never did them, could have though. I know Bonds is going to get torched when he gets the record, he's dirty, but you still have to hit the ball to be that bad. He's not the best that ever played anyways, Willie Mays had all 5 tools, Barry could never throw like the man. Enough of my rambling, these are just my opinions so who cares anyways!

Re: Performance enhancing drug use

Here's something to digest that I heard on our local sports talk station here in the Bay Area this morning. Hank Aaron took two years off to serve in the military and if the Braves had always played in the old launching pad in Atlanta he might have had 800-850 homers. WHAT IF??????????

Selig won't be around tonight, but Frank Robinson will, probably first AB.

I stand by my opinion, and, having seen Willie myself many times, including his 3,000th hit(!) he is the most natural and likable player ever, the 2nd best to ever play the game!!! When he says Barry sucks I'll buy in.

Re: Performance enhancing drug use

Having had personal contact with Hank Aaron 20 years ago, I told him he was the greatest home run hitter of all time, AND if he was surpassed it would still be true,....another opinion I stand by!  Spent half an hour with him, I can tell you he is self-effacing and humble, to a fault perhaps. nearly as likeable as Mays too!
