"If you like your Blues with a Bite, Try Snakewater's Debut Album "A New Breed" One listen and you'll be injected with Fever Burning Blues/Rock for which there is No antidote"
........ There must be something in the water (and it's more kickin' than a Mamba with bad attitiude) ,cos in the regions of Middle and North England where The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple & Black Sabbath were spawned from, comes an amazing Debut Album from 3 young lads from Manchester.
Taking influences from all the 70's British Blues/Rock giants like Zeppelin, Free, plus The Early American Blues legends like The 3 Kings BB, Albert & Freddie and mixing it all up and then delivering it with Venomous Tenacity, what you get is ........ Snakewater.
"A New Breed" is The Title and the music is coiled up ready to strike at your what you thought was your untapped Blues/Rock heard it all before ears.
Well this is ferocious tough 2012 Rockin Blues masterly produced by Chris Tsangarides (Gary Moore, Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath & Bruce Dickenson) plus a whole list of Rock who's who .........and made an incredible powerful debut release. This has to be said inline with Led Zeppelin 1 and Free's Ton of Sobs, there's no denying the slick tight riff laden not overdone Rock Songs with that 70's Blues Twist. Of the 10 anthemic songs 9 are written by Guitarist Bobby Grant with noted fused influences of Gary Moore, Paul Kossoff, Joe Bonamassa and The afore mentioned 3 kings, extremely fluid and sweet solo's surrounded by heavy riffs with a very tight Full Bass and Drum section backing these huge Rock songs on this awesome debut
So many standouts where to begin, well The album eerily starts down in the swamps on "Down To Louisiana" with Slide Acoustic into a ZZ/Bonamassa Tear up, A Stomping opener, The next 2 are from That 70's Zep/Free funky rock bluesprint "Muddy Water" & "Devil on my Trail", With Bobby growling out with his own inbuilt Blues style.
"Same Mistake" is the epic tune of the album with a soft start into a chunky riff and a constricting solo that wont let up until the frenzied creshendo uncoils, awesome self penned stuff..... "Built For Comfort" follows heavy chords swaggering,
then the Boogie/Rocker "Evil Love" tearin' on down the line, it's a good time rockin tune, this is so much fun this album a rarity there are no fillers here at all, just one true little gem, "Curious Minds" is a barnstormer like a Rodgers/Kossoff face off
"Hummingbird" is a tip of the hat to Freddie King with that so cool shuffle that just oozes and flows with Blues Class, my word this is good stuff .... Next up is the only cover on the album and is indeed a re-work of the classic Freddie King "Going Down" but not a copy but given a modern hard twist and it is incdredible listening to what Snakewater have done to this, superb crazy soloing to that unmistakable bass line, then it's onto the final song "Demons in my Mind" reminiscent of Gary Moore with that atmospheric feel in dreamy/crying soloing thus fades out to a remarkable first release by an unknown 3 man Rock/Blues band from Manchester England.
Did we say the same about Zeppelin Free Rory Gary when we first heard 'em, and Bonamassa, KWS, Gov't Mule in later years.
To my ears, this is equal and just an outstanding debut
I've been bitten by The Snakewater Blues
