Topic: Yet another amp question

In the next 7 months I'm going to be in the market for a hi gain amp.  I'm looking for at least a high gain amp with 2 or more channels.  Don't care if its 100 watts or 50 watts.  I've got a friend that has an old version 1 Peavey 5150 and a long time ago he was trying to selling 1 head, 2 cabinets, and a Wolfgang Special by Peavey (before the EVH gear) for $1700.  What do you think a good offer would be without the Wolfgang would be?  or should I skip it and go with a DSL?  I'm thinking I make an offer for $1000 and I help him sale the wolfgang on ebay.

I have a DSL100...I don't think you'll get the amount of gain you're looking for with it unless it's cranked or you use a pedal

Would if I could Ron, can barely scratch together the $1,150 together for a Ceriatone at the moment, I'm on a 16 year old's budget you have to remember!

Maybe 50 watts would be better or a combo.  In September I'm hoping to play a gig with my buddy's amp the 5150 and I'm hoping that he'll cut me a deal on it.  I'm sure I can't crank it up like its supposed to be but I think even if I decide I don't like the 5150 I'll have 2 4x12 cabs and could get a DSL or something to go with it.  He's told me I would like it but its really loud, then again our drummer is really loud too and the amp I'm using now doesn't really cut it unless we mic.

For an affordable high gain amp, I think you're on a good track with Peavey. Even their trans-tube technology designed amps have a pretty good sound. I would also suggest the Peavey JSX. Don't think they make it anymore (not sure), but the used heads are in the same ball park as the DSL $$. I used to have 2 of them, liked them a lot but tastes change.. They have a modern metal tone with some sizzle on the top end. 2 distortion channels and a clean channel, making them 3 channel amps. They make a combo version too. Plus they have a presence and resonance control which I always liked. Resonance knob helps dial in some added thump.

Agree with Lowther, the DSLs are thick with gain but not what I would consider a modern high gain amp. More of a thrash metal, mid-heavy, dirty gain..whatever that means! I will say I love the sound of my strat through the higher gain "red" channel with the deep switch on. Cool tone to rock out with! If you are ok with using a distortion pedal for high gain and getting a DSL to have for more versatility in the long run, that could be another option.

Not really too concerned with the hi gain end of it... I'm using a blues jr fender to death right now and its not even remotely hi gain.  I'm doing this country band thing and at practices the jr does great but I'm constantly adjusting volume and gain setting not even using a pedal.  I got a clean boost of it last month and that worked great until the end of the night when I had to turn up or get lost in the mix, then those 15 watts of power were just getting compressed instead of boosted.  So I am holding the idea of hi gain loosely with the regards of the fact that I want a amp that can get heavy, but I also want an amp that I can switch to a clean channel and play some softer sounds.  I have it in my head that a marshall type sound is what I want since I'm playing Gibson guitars in this band and my buddy is playing fender guitars.  So he's getting the twangy sound I want to bring the thunder.
