Topic: Which amp to choose ???

Hi, can anyone help me choose between five amps, I'm a massive joe bonamassa and Gary Moore fan, but also like rock bands such as led zeppelin and acdc, I'm looking for good hard rock tones and good bluesy tones such as a joe bonamassa and gary Moore tone,

The five amps are:
Marshall jtm45 reissue
Marshall jcm800
Orange TH100
Marshall DSL 100
Marshall 1959 SLP

I love what I've heard about these amps but need some help on the final decision
Much appreciated
Jed

Re: Which amp to choose ???

The common denominator in that list is the DSL...you could get close to all those tones...and Joe and Gary have used them...and great tones out of both. Just not good on the reliability in my personal experience.

Also would you suggest going for the 50 or 100 watts head, I practice in my bedroom but would use it for pub gigs and school gigs infront of about 750 people?

Re: Which amp to choose ???

I think I'd be more interested in a 50 watt head myself.  A lot of people on here will tell you to go for the 100 watt head, but where are you going to play 100 watts at?  If you go with 50 your still going to be very loud even if you have to push it, which most Marshalls I know sound better pushed.  100 watts is great if your going for the clean head room thing, like Joe but Joe is also pushing his amps harder then anybody playing a small pub or school will.  And he uses the plexi glass shield that blocks all the sound from hitting the front row and killing small animals.

Ok like coach said you will have many viewpoints on this matter. Not sure what your budget is but if you are searching for that Joe tone you need to start with a Marshall Silver Jubilee and a good clean amp like a Carol Ann. I also say get the 100w it will give you more range between clean and mean. You can get an attenuator for home. I know many who have gone with 50w heads and are bitterly disappointed. Just a brief spin with my two cents. Good luck on your search.

Why, where else did he post it?

Guitars: Fender American Original 60s Strat, Fender American Vintage 52 Tele, Gibson Les Paul Traditional
FX: Various including - Ceriatone Centura, Fire Custom Shop Carpe Diem
Amp: Fender ML212 Deville + 212 extention cabinet

Re: Which amp to choose ???

Yes, if you're getting a DSL: GET THE 100 WATT VERSION. They don't have to be turned up for good tone especially if you want a fair amount of distortion. You get more sustain with the volume and different dynamics but it'll work just fine for you at low volumes for home. You have 2 versions of each channel making it almost like a 4 channel head. The extra headroom of the 100 watts is worth it and they are both around the same price point.

Thanks, I've considered but that's a lot more expensive option and Marshall silver jubilees are quite rare and far between, but obviously would be the best way to get the joe bonamassa tone, yeah there isn't a big price difference between the DSL 50 and 100

Re: Which amp to choose ???

What are better for a dsl 100 and the joe bonamassa tone, vintage 30s speakers, g12t-75,g12m-25 or different type speakers? Thanks as you can see I'm not very knowledgeable on the gear side of guitar playing

2x12 EVM 12L is all you'll need for speakers. They are expensive, but they will last forever and I challenge you to try blowing them up.

Re: Which amp to choose ???

Yes, at least a 2x12 for the DSL. If you can, don't skimp on a cab too much. No sense in having a nice head and playing it through a junk cabinet with bad speakers. Of course if have to make-do, then you gotta do what you gotta do. No shame in that.

And for speakers, out of what you posted, you'll sound find with the 30s or 75s. I'd take those over the greenbacks from your suggested choices. If you wanna go all out, then yeah like Nick said, a 12L loaded 2x12 cabinet will be a perfect match for any amp.

As for the weight: I bought a cheap, fold up hand cart from a big box hardware store here in the US for about 25 bucks. It folds flat and the wheels fold inward and weighs next to nothing and takes up little room. Its certainly not designed to be moving super heavy things but great for gigs. I just wheel my stuff in and wheel it out when I'm done. Its great to start a gig without sore arms and leave without a sore back. (A pair of mechanics gloves are also a plus to alleviate fatigued hands while unloading and setting up/tear down.)

Thanks, would you say a Marshall cab would suit a Marshall head better? Also what is a good amp that has EVM 12L in it? What do you think of greenbacks g12ms?

Thanks a lot, do Marshall cabs come with fold down wheels anyway? What is the minimum watt cabb would I need for the dsl 100 watts? Obviously the bigger watt the more clarity I'm guessing?

Re: Which amp to choose ???

I like many, like my DSL 100 (pictured on left). I like the 100 for it's bottem end. It's very good for home playing. Doesn't have to be turned up to sound good. I believe the JTM45, 800, and 1959 all have to be turned up pretty high to sound the best plus I'm pretty sure those amps don't do quiet very well. They are loud even on 3. I also agree that a good cabinet loaded with at least two quality 12" speakers is money well spent.
