the Braves got Maholm (P) and Reed Johnson from the cubbies in a trade, they got some minor leaguers but probably good talent there. We needed another pitcher badly and I think Maholm will fit in just fine if we just score him a few runs.

Maholm is on fire. He has arguably been the best pitcher in baseball over the last month. 6 or 7 straight starts of 6 innings or more while giving up no runs or 1 run in each.
Let's see if he can keep it up.
Ryan Dempster goes to the Rangers less than 5 minutes before the deadline expires, in exchange for two minor leaguers.
Unfortunately, no takers for Soriano.

Chad Tracy returns from DL to the bench, while Corey Brown, whose first ever hit for the Nats last week was a home run, got sent to Syracuse. That's it. I imagine that they're all particularly looking forward to playing the Phillies tonight behind Strasburg. cool

Line score after 7 innings Strasburg 6ER's on 8 hits in 4 innings pitched. Phi 6 Wash 0, Cliff Lee still on the mound.

The A's decided if ain't broke don't fix it, other than acquiring George Kotarras from Mil. on Sunday they decided to sit pat. They're after their 20th win in the month of July, now that's playin' some HOT baseball.

The Phils have a fire sale on a downer season and then shut out the Nats with an 8-0 win, playing their easiest game of the season! Go figure! lol Hated to see the Flyin' Hawaiian leave us...part of our World Series win and a reminder of that aging team.

I read in the Chicago Sun-Times today that Alfonso Soriano used his 5 & 10 status to veto a trade to the Giants. I guess we're stuck with him and his $36M salary over the next two years.

I wonder if the Sun-Times fabricated that story? That rumor never even surfaced on sportstalk radio here or was even  speculation among everything that went on yesterday. We're more than satisfied with the Hunter Pence & Marco Scutaro deals. Pence didn't reach SF till the game had just ended last night, but the fans who were straggling out saw him enter through the left field wall as he headed to the dugout to meet his new team mates in the clubhouse. Some youngsters were overheard chanting a new nickname for him, "Unter Pance", LOL!

Bill, like I said, not a word about Soriano was mentioned out here. I think it was wishful thinking on the Cubs part to unload him, even if the Giants did talk to the Cubs, he wasn't their guy. BTW, we're down 2-1 in the 7th, Pence hasn't done much....so far.

I'm guessing there was some preliminary talk and they decided they should get Soriano's ok before the discussions went too far. I figured he'd be impossible to unload.

Yeah some guys are real neck anchors. The Giants have one named Barry Zito, but he's been earning his keep actually this season. However SF is stuck with him for the entirety of his contract unless they want to buy him out, which would be costly.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

this is a great story, and yeah very much under the radar. He lost his last outing 4-2, we just didn't get him enough runs. But the ERA is stellar and we are very happy to have him with all the pitching problems Braves have had.

By some way the statistically best team in baseball, who have actually not been all that good building the current six game streak, but it sure helps when you get to play the worst team in baseball. cool

They're breaking records with every game now at 26 above .500! Three of the starting pitchers  with great ERAs (Strasburg, Zimmerman and Gio Gonzalez) have hit homers this season, which is truly amazing!

(And, I saw RG3's first Skins TD pass, so I'm feeling particularly good about my US teams!) tongue

Rob Brantley.  This young man grew up 4 houses down from us in Murrieta, CA.  Great young man.  Worked his tail off for as long as I've known him.  His every wakeing moment has been baseball.  Rob got drafted with the 100th pick in the 2009 MLB draft by the Detroit Tigers.  Rob made it to AAA Toledo earler this spring and about two weeks ago got traded to the New Orleans Zeyphers.  Today Rob got the call that every young baselball player wants.  The Miami Marlins called him up to the big leagues.  So very proud of this young man.

Good for him! there's tons of kids that play their hearts out, but never even get to the minors. I'll bet he wasn't happy about where he got traded to, but look how it worked out. He probably wasn't gonna break into that Detroit line up for awhile. Hope he makes the most of his shot in "The Show". Hey RF, remember when the Zephyrs played in Denver?

Culture shock???  Perhaps.  He started out in A ball in Grand Rapids, MI, then got moved to Lakeland FL...Got moved to AA in Erie PA then up to AAA in Toledo then got traded to New Orleans and now on to Miami.

Interesting enough, he an my youngest daughter have alwyas been good friends and stayed in touch regularly.  She's in Baton Rouge at college and was supposed to drive down to New Orleans today to see him.  He called her yesterday afternoon to tell her he wouldn't be able to see her cause he was headed to the big leagues.   For any stat geeks out there...   http://www.baseball-reference.com/minor … antl001rob

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

That is a nice story, I'll keep a look out for him since we are regular NL east foes. C'mon down now Padres, we need some wins to keep pace with the Nats who just don't lose that often. It's frustrating, we win and they win, and when they lose like yesterday we cannot find a way to win.
