Fantastic opening ceremony last night! The history, the music, the humour, the pyrotechnics ect ... all came together - Job well done by all involved.

I nearly got it right,  who was going to light the Olympic flame.
A nice touch i thought, giving the final honor to seven young aspiring Olympians. I thought the cauldron idea was inspired.

Lets hope 'the Cav' can bring home our first Gold in the cycling road race later.

Nearly got it right??? 'fess up Brack, you wanted Adele to light the cauldron! LOL!!! Heard the London Bookies had to return all money bet as no one got it right. When's the last time that happened, London books on stuff that Vegas wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole. Thought the opening was a huge bore except for Bond escorting Liz to the show.

Sorry for the Brits. I can imagine how much it meant. But winning the Tour, Cav winning the World title..I'd say your doing just fine. And, I think Wiggans will win the TT. I have a question though.
Is the flame staying in the middle of the stadium? I couldn't tell during my coverage today. That thing has to give off a lot of heat?!
As for swimming, there's plenty more to come. I'm proud of team USA smile    Cathy

I think that the UK media built up Cav's chances too much, - a lot of media who know nothing about cycling were reporting this as an easy win, yet they forgot that the Italians, Spanish etc were not going to allow the race to run to the benefit of GB/Cav especially as it required him to follow the same pan as he had for the World Championship race.

The disappointment for me so far is the swimming performance of GB swimmers, - being along way off of the pace, - fingers crossed for Rebecca Adlington tonight, - she is a lovely down to earth girl.

Sorry to read that you did not enjoy the opening ceremony ohiodawg.

Re: London 2012 Olympics & Paralympics

The biggest disappointment to me is having the games on NBC.

So pathetic is their coverage that it makes me not want to watch it.

I really enjoyed the Opening Ceremonies until the commentators started opening their mouths.

I would have muted it, but then I couldn't hear all the music that was heavily involved. NBC gave us their best, Meredith Vierra and Matt Lauer, these 2 lackeys that use their face more than their brains in commentating an Olympic Ceremony.  It would have been so much better with some actors who had animation in their voice and accurate timing of when to announce information. Actors actually have to memorize lines so they more than can handle the information that these 2 Bozos should have known. I guess they missed their teleprompter.  Maybe with both your monotone voices, they can have you commentating on the U.S. Open.  Better yet, just stick with the Today show, where you both can stay chatting about yourselves, your favorite subject.

The other thing that I really didn't enjoy was the limited coverage and the cutaway of events.

I am watching the men's gymnastics, very poorly covered.  They only showed certain men doing certain events. As I am watching and I am so intrigued, right after the commercial, I get women's swimming. Huh?  What?  Where did you go?

No announcement that they were going to cutaway to another event.  No announcement as to when the men's gymnastics will return.  And the most important thing, No announcement after they showed the men's gymnastics of who actually qualified for the finals.  I had to go look it up on the internet.

I will try Cathy's BBC link or some other way to hopefully get better coverage.  Bring the wonderful Jim McKay back. RIP.  Now that was a pro.  They just don't make them like him anymore sad

To be honest Ian I only caught bits and pieces during the Giants/Dodgers baseball game that was on at the same time. Baseball far outweighs an event like the opening ceremony in my world. I surfed over to NBC at just the right moment as the Bond skit was starting and hung with it, I guess the queen has a stitch of humor after all. Does anybody benefit from these games in today's world economy? Remember 4 years ago in China, they spent twice the money to showcase themselves and today those exotic venues basically sit vacant. I did hear you can rent a Segue scooter to do a lap around the track in the Birds Nest Stadium though,WOW! Of course the Chinese have money to burn, but will the UK end up in the loss column when these games come to a close? Not to mention the flood of news reports about how fed up Londoners are about the disruption of their day to day lives during the games.

I loved the opening ceremony (especially Glastonbury Tor) and loved Jane's comment about BCC for the industrial scene.  The Queen did steal the show though.

WOW!
Spain reels in disbelief as Honduras vanquishes the mighty favorite. That was one of the most exciting games I've ever seen. I watched on Mexican national tv as the announcers were overcome with excitement while the valiant Honduran defense turned back an incredible assault by Spain. Hijole! Que momento!

Thank you for the link. I appreciate it and will give this a try.  It would be great to see more fuller coverage of the men's gymnastics.  And I also loved Jane's comment about BCC and TBOJH for the industrial scene.  Maybe someway we can stick those songs in there wink

The BBC had 3 commentators - two of them shouldn't even have bothered, imo.
One of them even tried telling jokes - for fear of drying up - NOT funny!
Apart from that... agree with Sandy - thought the Queen stole the show!

None of the four channels that I zap between showed this yesterday. sad Certainly a major shock!

How about that 'unknown' 15 year old Lithuanian girl swimmer? Wow.

Finally, I've always known that the Daily Mail is a worthless rag, but this outrage by someone called Jan Moir really makes my blood boil -

We got our first medal, courtesy of cyclist Lizzie Armitstead. What an utter darling. According to commentators, she had  ‘fresh legs in good shape’, which she used to batter heroically through a torrential rainstorm, only to come second to some b itch from Holland.

Re: London 2012 Olympics & Paralympics

Have to say that I have watched very little of this.  I like when the events are live and did catch some of the USA v Montenegro water polo early in the day this past weekend, but I simply cannot tolerate NBC's excessive commercials (many about NBC's fall line up of shows that I won't watch) & overly produced special interest stories.  I know that many folks like this and that's fine.  For me... It's a sporting event.  Get out of the way and show the sporting event.  Don't show me part of gymnastics to get me interested, then cut to swimming and beaucoup commercials and come back to gymnastics at some point later.   By then, I've moved on to other tasks in my life.
