Topic: Learning the Guitar

I've decided to have a go at learning the guitar so I bought a second hand acoustic last week. I'm currently just working on the C, D & G chords and was wondering if anyone here could give me tabs to a song or two (rock or blues preferred!) with just these chords.

No doubt I'm going to have endless hours of stress and frustration ahead!

Any help would be much appreciated, cheers.

Good luck Murray - are you going to practice between work, going to gigs, reading, TV shows and sleep? smile

My favorite song of all time, D, C, G, Sweet Home Alabama. Search Sweet Home Alabama and watch one of the tutorials on YouTube, you'll have it down in no time if you have the knack and the ear. Smart move starting out with a second hand instrument, I have friends that have spent big bucks on guitars that just sit in a closet now.

Yeah B-Metal, my Tide axe is sittin' right behind me in my room. Helluva deal for Epi Jrs. with those college logos. Wish they'd had a Buckeye or ND model though. Mike Campbell can be seen playin' his Gator model in the live DVD from the Petty box set Runnin' Down A Dream. Bought mine with On-line casino winnings, reference Won Anything Lately post. I bought 2 guitars, a mandolin, 3 cases, Sony studio headphones, a Rockman, and a Crate 5Watt practice amp with the dough I used to haul in till that twit "W" clamped down on the internet casinos. God bless the rich for keeping us 99%ers in our place!

Re: Learning the Guitar

Loads of Eagles songs are based around this chord sequence. Go onto ultimate guitar and you will find loads.

Come on the Blades (sorry Idolbone just had to borrow your line)

Not to mention Neil Young and some AC/DC. Murray, you might want to include A & E as well, two other root chords.

Re: Learning the Guitar

Something to consider is get a capo, you can play the same 3 chord patterns  just in different keys.  Then you won't limit yourself to one key.

Re: Learning the Guitar

Thanks for the replies guys, it's much appreciated. As for adding A & E, i'll hopefully get to them at some point, working with 3 chords is hard enough just now! I don't think I'm a natural!

Re: Learning the Guitar

Oh and vanderbilly .com for video instruction may be helpful.

Re: Learning the Guitar

Just a tip, the A chord is easier than the C chord really... I tend to play A as a bar across the DG&B strings and mute the High E.. Mainly for a good power chord rock sound but also for ease... I can play it conventionally also if the song dictates a full six string sound to it.

I also advise learning to play the E major and A minor Shape with your last three fingers instead of the way the books tell you, that way you'll have your index finger free & ready for barring when you come to learn barre chords. :-)

Re: Learning the Guitar

You're post was a while back so you may be playing a few more now anyhow.. but I think Bad Moon Rising is a really fun and easy song: DAGD.

If you like rock, Alive by Pearl Jam is just a few chords-if you're happen with playing suspended 4s.

Re: Learning the Guitar

How about little black egg....or Big Rock Candy Mountain?  My first like 45 years ago (OMG).  And now I'm at a place where I should try and relearn them.

Bonaburst #18, JB Epi #191, MusicMan Darklord, LP Cherryburst Traditional Plus, Gigliotti GT, Takamine, Takamine 12 string, Martin D-28 & GPCPA1, Fender Amer STD Strat, Fender Custom Shop Gold Metalflake, Custom "OSU" Wagner Tele, Gibson SG Limited Govt Model, Jim Kelly Combo

Re: Learning the Guitar

Learn a I- IV-V  pattern in any key for timing etc, then expaND TO ALL KEYS, adding 7ths for blueseyness.  That's crucial to me, to not get bored.  That will be most rock n roll tunes we know wink
