Topic: New Guitar Day - Suhr Set Neck Modern
A year ago I played a Suhr 2010 LE set neck modern and it blew me away. It was the tone I was hearing in my head, and I'd never played a guitar that felt so good. There were a few things I didn't like - the LE had no fret markers, which was hard to get used to, and I wasn't sure I liked the medium-sized frets (although stainless are awesome, I'd never go back). After some internal debate I sold four guitars and a whole bunch of other stuff to finance a custom-built version of that LE. I took a few months to figure out exactly which nut width, neck profile and fret size I wanted, and decide on a color. I kept the foundation - alder body, maple cap, roasted maple neck, SSV/SSH+ pickups - but added a Suhr ML middle SC, fret dot markers, stainless steel jumbo frets, slightly larger neck profile, a blower switch and a coil splitter. A custom built one was actually $400 cheaper than the 2010 LE (no fancy LE inlay or 'anniversary' case).
Ordered January 5th, just came this Tuesday and it exceeded all of my expectations. I was a little nervous having given up so much to get this, and I had seven months to stew on it - did I choose the right neck profile, will I like the jumbo frets, how will the color turn out? It completely blows away any guitar I've ever played - tone, feel, vibe. This is truly my dream guitar. I love the spank and clarity of alder, and the SSV/SSH+ pickups are a great vintage-style HB - very clear and articulate. I also tend to like set neck guitars, so for me this is the perfect combination. It's an amazing rhythm guitar - super clarity, great chunk, and for lead stuff it can be smooth or mean, and it's very dynamic and expressive.
Two little things pleasantly surprised me - the coil splitter sounds better than any I've ever heard. Very, very useable and convincing SC tone. Second, the trem is so incredibly smooth and stable. I wasn't a big trem guy before but i was doing a bad Jeff Beck impression within minutes of getting my hands on it.
Perhaps the best part: it didn't cost me a dime out of pocket. I had lots of guitars I wasn't playing much, and that needed work. Sold a parts tele w/ 72 custom neck, a National Tricone resonator, a 57 reissue strat, and a Jackson Dinky Reverse. Clearing out the closet bought me a dream-come-true. Huge range of tone and super smooth and easy to play. Couldn't be happier. Without further ado, here's some pics...
